Reed's pass to Green in the post was probably the highlight of the game tonight. Fantastic pass.

Did you go to the game?? Reed played quite well against Howard's Ford if you want to go by just points scored, then yes ford was held to 9 points. what i am worried about is the ease at which a guard from howard was able to beat reed and other defenders off the dribble

I know my views aren't liked by some on the board, but I once again sat in the stands and frankly watched Reed VERY closely during his 22 minutes on action and my views have not changed one bit.
The stat line says 6 assists and 1 TO and I'll give him some credit for a couple of nice passes. However, as was mentioned in another post the Howard inbounds defense was a complete joke. Reed got 3 or 4 of those assists on just throwing the ball to a wide open guy under the basket. Someone has to get the assist and I give Reed credit, but they were not in the flow of the game.
He once again played 22 minutes and couldn't hit a shot. 0-5 including 2 free throws.
The reality is Howard and Norfolk State are the level of teams he should play all the time.
He needs to play because we have no one else, but I wasn't very impressed that in 22 minutes against frankly an awful team that he couldn't get a point. You have to be a threat on the floor especially when smart teams will just play zone against us every game in the big east.
Sorry for being a crank, but I do know a fair amount about basketball and watch Reed very closely in person at every game.

FOTP, How do you explain his performance against Clemson last week? And 6 assists to 1 turnover is 6 assists to 1 turnover regardless of the negative spin you try to put on it. Cook and Wallace both played more minutes than Reed and combined for 6 assists and 3 turnovers. I'm guessing the easy passes only opened up when Reed was on the court. Once again, it's not like any of us are saying that he's great or should even start, but you're continuous bashing of Reed is ridiculous. No one's questioning that you know a fair amount of basketball, but a lot of us are starting to question your objectivity when comes to Ray Reed.
Also, was Tony Bethel a Big East pg? He seemed to have good stats for us but from what i've seen so far this year it's starting to look like Sweets helped him out alot. NC St. and Herb Sendek play a very similar style of play to what you will see from JT III and it looks like it's taken Mr. Bethel a little time to adjust.

Actually Bethel was an undersized 2 guard. His numbers have been pretty bad the last couple of weeks. I think he had a 1-10 type game recently. His minutes are going down too.
So the answer is he isn't really a starting caliber guard in a major conference. I liked Tony, but he is probably better suited to coming off the bench.
I agree...6 assists are 6 assists. Ray found some open guys under the basket.
My opinion: Ray will struggle against better competition in the Big East.
We have serious problems at the guard spot across the board in my opinion.

I'm actually really not attacking Ray personally. I'm really just using him as an example of our recruiting woes of the last administration.
It's always awkward when a new coach comes in. He's stuck with the recruits from the last administration and it usually sorts itself out over time.
The reality is once you sign up as a recruit you're not guaranteed a scholarship for all 4 years. It's an annual decision.
I just hope we can recruit better in the next couple of years and turnover the roster in a way that fits JTIIIs style.
Go Hoyas! And go Ray Reed! I truly hopes he improves, but I'm skeptical. Sorry if I've offended anyone and I have NO agenda at all other than being a massive Hoya fan who just wants us to get back to being great. I just don't believe in blind support.
Happy New YEar all...

Hi FOTP. You are correct in that the need to play Reed reflects a huge lack of depth and BE talent at the guard spot. My point is that he has improved a great deal from last year. To quote that great philosopher Donald Rumsfeld " you go to war with what you got". Hopefully the cabinet won't be as bare with JTIII's recruits in the years ahead.

Or to quote from the sports philosophers with the most highly used cliche of 2004: "it is what it is."

My problem w/ Reed has always been the fact that he's out of control most of the time when he's on the court. He has a tendency to drive baseline w/o any idea of what he's planning on doing and then throwing up a wild shot or pass b/c he's run into the big guys. IF, Reed is in control and works within the offense, he has the potential to be a solid contributer. Hopefully, he's turned the corner and has realized what he can and can't get away with at the Division I level. i agree, i really dont like him, but if he progresses into a good guard, well he will gain my respect.

luckily we were able to shorten our bench tonight...i saw reed in for a second. i believe he fouled right away
i can never figure out the rotation. i guess jt3 goes with his gut during the game. i felt ramell played well in the illinois game but came back from the island hardly getting a look vs meac teams
oh well
go hoyas i trust the coach
