I just wanted to repeat a couple of comments I read on this site a while back. I tried to go back to them, but couldn't find the posts. Maybe they were deleted.
It seems to me that a lot of people are coming up with a lot of reasons why we aren't playing well. "we won't be good until the stadium is built" "we won't be good until we are fully funded". "we won't be good until the new OC can teach the offense his scheme." When i played and immediately after, I heard the same nonsense. "we won't be good until we get to recruit patriot league players." "we won't be good until we have four years of patriot league recruits." We won't be good until we get more full-time coaches."
guys, this is absurd. we can be good right now if we had the kind of capable leadership and administration that other patriot league teams, and even MAAC teams enjoy today. The fact is, we've been getting worse ever since we left the MAAC. In our last three years before entering the patriot league (2 in maac and 1 indy) we were 2-6 against patriot league teams. Since joining the league, we've gone an embarrassing 3-22. We've also managed to lose by a lot more than we used to. The margin of victory for PL teams playing us is around 24 points this year. even in 2000, when we were independent, that margin was about 12 points, or half what it is today.
No one hates to see the Hoyas lose more than me. But we need to realize that 7 years of "rebuilding" is an awfully long time. Its sad to say, but I think our team is worse than the team 6 years ago with JJ and even 4 years ago with Paulus and Peterson.
So what are the problems and how do we fix them?
1) Coaches. We need to have coaches that stay with the team long enough to develop a relationship with the other coaches and players. "4 OC's in 4 years" is a joke. Full credit to Benson for getting us to the Patriot League, he has great vision. But in the past few years, there's obviously been a problem with translating that vision into a reality. maybe a shorter-sighted agenda (like getting ONE PL win this year), implemented by a more consistent staff, might serve the team well.
2) Players. I've heard this arguement made before, but why are seniors repeatedly given the boot for younger players? Are you telling me that, for the past 4 years, our sophomores have always been better than thier senior counterparts? After 3 years in the program, can the coaches find any seniors that are talented enough to start on saturdays? It seems to me that the longer a player is in the Hoya football program, the less valuable they become to the coaches. it should be the opposite.
No wonder we look confused and disorganized on gameday. Players need senior leadership ON THE FIELD to win games.
3 Admin. The gtown athletic department is satisfied with mediocrity. Former AD Joe Lang said it himself , "the georgetown basketball program cannot be expected to make it to the tourney every year." wow. Excuse me for saying, but i think we should play like we can win every game, in every sport. a winning attitude comes from the top down, and georgetown athletics has repeatedly disappointed thier athletes (this includes financially). Maybe the new AD will be different.
4) fans. Honestly, I can't really expect a lot of fans to show up to watch a 2-7 team go winless in thier conference. neither should any of you. maybe if we win, we'll get more.
Now how do we fix these problems? any ideas? I'd like to hear from some other fans.
