I know a lot has been said about the QB position and with good cause. I believe we need to try some new talent or stay with Crawford and go back to the offensive scheme we used last year.
I find it very hard to understand what has happened, in just one year, other than GT is running a new offense. Last year Crawford threw for a 53.6 completion average and just shy of 2000 yards with 16 TD's. The top three running backs (excluding the FB) ran for 1534 yards and probably averaged over 5.5 per carry. This was accomplished with the same offensive line that we started this year with - save one. Terrazzino, Cummings , Goethals, and Riley were all starters last year and now are supposedly more experienced. I would have thought that we would be able to have great stats this year, with Crawford or whomever. As far as the receivers issue goes, I think a receiver is as good as the QB throwing to him, the number of receivers on the play and the routes being run. I think if you put four wide receivers on a play that the receivers have more of a chance to get open than if you have two. Also, if the receivers are always running short routes this also has an impact. I can't say that the receivers aren't the problem, but I can say that we have some pretty decent recruits and some decent upper-classman. Besides Agnello (very good speed) and Saunders and Wooten, GT has some other possibles. Chris Gary was a leading reeiver for a great team in Calif. and Steve Ekecheku (from Ohio) had some very impressive stats when he joined the team. I believe I remember him having an average reception of over 22 yds per catch in High School. Plus I think I remember reading about at least one other receiver with very good speed (possibly Edwards). I can't say who else might also be a possible, but I really doubt whether the receivers would look all that bad if they were running the exact same offense as last year.
I have said before that we need to get a QB in the line up who can throw effectively down field. Maybe that is Crawford or maybe someone else, but we need to get more WR's on the field at one time, have the QB drop straight back, and see if the OL can protect him. I am not saying to abandon the option offense, but I think we need to mix it up. Currently, I think that is too easy to figure out what Georgetown plans to do offensively, and if we continue to have problems with our passing game, it won't be long before even our running offense will be held in check.
