I think it is interesting to note that over the last 10 years Georgetown has has a successful program whenever they have had a quarterback at the helm who could throw effectively and also throw downfield.
In the five years from 1995-1999 Georgetwon won 39 games and lost 13 (75% winning percentage). During this time they had two good quarterbacks (Ward & Mont) who could move the ball downfield. Now I know some are going to say that was in the MAAC, and this is now the Patriot League. But in the 1996-1999 period Georgetwon beat Duquesne two out of four times and beat Holy Cross two out of four times. A few years later, Paulus (another good passer) came in for the last five games of the season (I believe) and he won four games. Even last year, the team was showing improvement with Crawford and Turner in there at QB and a much improved running game. But I think we gave this up for a new style of offense that I am not sure is concentrating on getting the ball passed downfield. All the good Patriot league teams that I can remember have had very good paasing teams, and I truly believe that this is the way to win. If we want to run the option series from time to time I think this is great, but the QB I would start would be the best passer on the squad. This new transfer (Cangelosi) did not look very good this past week, but I have to think he is a pretty good passer. According to an article I read, he played for a strong HS team where he had over a 60% completion average and I believe over 20 touchdowns in his senior year. Good enough to be recruited by North Carolina (?). I would see if I couldn't develop him. In the meantime, I would use Crawford, who did well last year and I would only think would get better.
As far as the talent goes, I think we have recruited well, and I think we now have good size and good speed. I think the defense will do well and is now only suffering from too many young and inexperienced players. On the other side of the ball, I think we need a new QB and maybe even need to make some changes on the offensive line. The receiving corps I don't think is that bad. I just think they need to have more WR's in the lineup (3 or 4 on a given play) and have someone at QB who can get them the ball. I can't understand why we are having so much trouble getting the ball downfield when most of the lineman are back from a team that had respectable (not great) passing stats last year. At running back we are strong, but I think we should alternate Sarin and Slayton.
