Does anyone know who's calling the game? Raftery, Bilas, McDonough? It won't be Dick Vitale, he'll likely miss most or all of the rest of the season with throat surgery ( link, link).

Get well soon, Dickie V. As the SN entry puts it: "Sure, he can be annoying, to put it mildly, and his Duke-love his way beyond the realm of professionalism, but you have to love his enthusiasm for the sport. And, more importantly, for the fans."

Vitale announced games are the kiss of death for us, I can recall at least two of our loses last year (Duke and Pitt) that he did

As much as Dicky V can be annoying - it would be weird having college basketball without hearing his voice - which has sounded strained lately - so I wish him the best on his recovery.

My Christmas has arrived early. Vocal cords probably injured by too much "Special K" down his throat.

I haven't been able to find the answer yet, but this message board will usually post the announcer pairings for upcoming games. So far, they only have 12/10-12/16 up. CORRECTION - I found the thread for this weekend's games. However, here's what they have listed: 4 Georgetown @ 2 Memphis, 12:00 ESPN: Dan Shulman, Dick Vitale, Doris Burke I guess we'll have to wait and see who replaces Dukie V.

Calling JAY BILAS--Hoya game requires your presence.
Good riddance to Vitale--my CBB season just became more enjoyable and Stuart Scott is down as well--this is THE YEAR. Sorry that it had to be due to illness--but any season without Vitale is better. He was once great for the game--and now he just exploits it like everyone else at ESPN or anything else they do.
BTW--if Doug Gottlieb shows up as the replacement announcer instead of Bilas--the entire game will be watched on MUTE.

I wasn't looking forward to Vitale's presence. Not a bad guy, just a horrible game caller. Get the Governor to replace him.
Seriously I don't understand why this game isn't on CBS anyway.

He'd probably freak out when a fan calls him out for being a thief and make some lame 'your mom' joke.

I did not know of Vitale's upcoming surgery until reading these messages and I just read his letter to the fans on ESPN.com. Certainly Dick Vitale can be annoying as Hell with his love of everything Duke and NC, but he truly is the ambassador of college basketball. His obvious enjoyment doing what he has done for almost 30 years is to be envied. In addition, he is a gentleman and dedicated to his family. His work for cancer donations is inspiring. We all should have his energy. I have noticed that his voice has not been the same for at least the last 18 months, so this news does not suprise me. I do hope that his recovery is swift and wish him nothing but the best. Having said all that, I would like to see Bilas take his spot this Saturday. Happy holidays to all.

I could/should take my shots at Vitale, but it is the holidays and RDF just made me Google Adriana Lima. ;D Instead I will say bring on Mr. Raft(The TV voice of the Big East), or Dykes/Bardo. EDIT. I forgot about my man Coach Lav. Lav and Hubbert are real good in the studio though. Ok on second thought I'll take a little shot. What Elvado said

I'm disappointed that I can't watch Dickie V. His enthusiasm for games got me into college hoops when I was younger.

I'm disappointed that I can't watch Dickie V. His enthusiasm for games got me into college hoops when I was younger. I don't get all this overblown hype about Dukie V being an ambassador for the game and getting people excited about college basketball. I've never once tuned in to a game based on who was announcing the game (ok, maybe Gus Johnson once or twice). It's the games, the match-ups, the players, and the schools that get people excited. Does he shill for the game and his favorite coaches/schools all the time? Yes. Would college basketball be where it is right now without him? Yes. I'm sure he's a nice guy and I have nothing against him, but he adds nothing to the games he calls, Sportscenter, ESPN.com, ABC and whatever else he does.
