What's weird is if you look at the stats (free throw rate), we almost never go to the line, and our opponents almost never go to the line. Then when either team gets there they shoot 50something percent.
I guess that also means that the sample size on our made free throw percentages (both for and against) are very small for having played five games.

Hack-a-Mack is coming if he can't get better from the line.

Hack-a-Mack is coming if he can't get better from the line. Last season it was "Leave Rivers wide open behind the arc", hopefully Vern improves his ft's as much as Jeremiah has improved his long ball

The problem I see with free throws is that we're thinking too much and not getting legs under the shots. Can you also use your magical vision to see inside the other coach's head so that we know what play is coming?

ive got a reason why we are doing so poorly on free throws ITS TOO QUIET WHILE WE SHOOT yup need SOME noise or the guys get a little flipped out and blow it SO MAKE SOME NOISE NOT A LOT BUT SOME DURING FREE THROWS .. any better explanation i do believe it is a mental thing how do you shooot less from the line than field goals when you are frequently on the move in trafiic and somebodys guarding you huhuh?? come on hoyas come out strong vs. bama first big test and the free throws MUST go in at least 70% to win go hoyas ;D ;D ;D

Free throws will get better

Free throws will get better Against: W&M: 11-17, 64.7% MI: 2-4, 50% BSU: 8-17, 47.1% ODU: 9-14, 64.3% FU: 9-22, 40.9% I don't doubt this will be a point of emphasis in practice this season, but it's hard to believe that we would have regressed in this skill from last season. I mean, even Wallace is struggling from the line. I agree with Locker, that our FT rate is very low, but it's not like we're only taking a couple attempts a game a la MI. Even if you eliminate ALL of Macklin's misses yesterday from the line, we only shoot 9-18. This should be the most automatic part of the game, but we're leaving a lot of points on the table.

The team practices on a lot of different areas. FT is one of the areas of practice that is left for the players to delegate time to. (that doesn't mean they don't practice FT as a team, it just means they don't spend a substantial amount of the TEAM practice time on FT's). To get better they need to do one of two things: 1. PUT MORE TIME INDIVIDUALLY INTO FT'S 2. ALLOT MORE TIME FROM TEAM PRACTICE to FT's
I move for the former... don't waste the teams time for something you should improve as an individual.

It would help the percentage a lot if Jon Wallace had more attempts than Vernon Macklin. Wallace has 6 attempts in 127 minutes. He only made 3, but he is an 85-90 percent shooter. Austin Freeman has played 92 minutes and still has not attempted a foul shot. Patrick Ewing Jr. has 2 attempts in 127 minutes. Roy is 12 for 24, but he will have a 9 for 10 game at some point here and will get back up to his career 70 percent.

No dribble drive, which means less fouls, which means less free throws. Most free throw attempts will occur in post moves, on backdoors, and in "bonus" situation, rarely will you see a player "draw" a foul in the traditional sense

One of the coaches needs to work on Vern's technique on free throws. With the technique he is using he will never be good at it. Not worried about the rest, including Rivers who seems to have worked on his technique in the off-season.

There's four differences between last year's offense and the offense so far this year:
1. Last year we got a lot more offensive rebounds. 2. Last year we got fouled more and when we got fouled we made the shots. 3. This year we're turning the ball over much, much less. Only Sapp and Wright are over a 20% TO Rate. 4. Unfortunately, the level of competition so far this year has been lower.
I'm not sure we can do anything about #1, and we're going to have to hope the whole offense improves enough to keep up with the competition. But #2 can be actively improved.

its mental ...they need alot of practice to make it automatic .....and run like hell when they miss in pracitce........ and the think the ball in after having pracitced it like 1000 times ok thats my best shrink advice AND REMEMBER THEY ARE FREE NOT GUARDED AND LIKE TWLEVE FEET AWAY IS THAT THE RIGHT DISTANCE? and nobody is trying to block them.... and the crowd at home shouldnt be totally quiet..... nope a little background noise ...... go hoyas .... beat bama ....hit those FREE throws...cause they are FREEE ;D

The team practices need to end in a FT shoot-out until the team shoots over 70% for three games in a row. It would go something like this: Divide the teams in two, each player shoots 10 FTs, the team with the most players shooting over 70% wins and the losing teams runs to the Exorcist steps and does 10 reps.

lic, what is the code for that? Missed FTs bothers me more than white uniforms, but both are fixable problems.
