So is it too early? Its less than 2 weeks until we open the season.
Here's what I know about W&M - they are in the process of changing their mascot because of the Native American mascot rule.
They lost their best player from last year Adam Payton - and are sort of left with a good line-up of support players from last year. Laimis Kisielius is likely their number one option - 6'8 Forward, Lithuania. David Schneider their 6'3 point guard is another one to watch. He showed flashes of being a #1 option during his freshman year. Alex Smith and Peter Stein are likely to start down low (6'5, 6'9 respectively), however, they don't really offer much size against Roy, Pat, DaJuan, and the Vern.
This is a lot like the opener last year against Hartford. On paper we should win easily. Whether we actually do that is more of a function of being comfortable in the offense, shaking off rust, and integrating the freshmen well.

Watched this team play against George Mason last year. They really don't have much of an inside game--rely heavily on jumpshooting.
They beat GMU on the road mainly because of GMU's inability to finish around the basket. They will have no interest in banging inside.
By the way....any word on when ticket packages will be sent out...?

Yea, I have a good friend attending W&M. He assures me that we can expect them to bomb threes and pray.

www.wm.edu/athletics/index.phpThe nickname Tribe is not offensive, but those feathers are dangerous. Under the Media Guide in the "This is Tribe Basketball" section, W&M notes that last year was the fifth team in their 102-year history with 15 Division I victories. They're historically awful, have made one NIT appearance (a loss, in 1983), and have never made the NCAAs. I'll be out of the country for this and the Michigan game, so cheer a little louder to make up for it!

Yea, I have a good friend attending W&M. He assures me that we can expect them to bomb threes and pray. Is that a winning strategy for a team that shot .321 from three point land last year? ON EDIT: If its going to be a three shooting game - look for Nathan Mann (6'2, Guard from Overland Park, KS) to take a lot of them - he took and made the most per game last year.

I agree it's a similar game to the Hartford game, but I have to believe we'll win by a more comfortable margin than last year's opener. Last year our team started in a period of transition after losing Bowman/Cook/Owens, where it took them over 2 months to gel and function as a cohesive unit. With all but 1 key player in the rotation back, I think it should take far less time this year for our starters to get on the same page with each other. I'm looking for this squad to get out of the gate quickly against an overmatched opponent.
I will also be checking out my new seat location. As long as my damn tix get here in time.

william and mary is terrible , end of story
most important aspect of this game will be seeing how well the new comers have integrated into the system as well as getting our bench some meaningful PT (before we are up 25+)

From the W&M board:
If they stay hurt, we may not even get their best shot.

St. Pete, why do you refer to Delta Force under your Sidekicks avatar?

But seriously folks...
I couldn't be more excited for this game. Obviously, any new season brings excitement, but this one in particular is interesting. Historically, III's teams start kind of slow as the roster learns the system at game speed. With so many new faces (not just in the starting lineup, but more so throughout the roster) primed to take big roles this season, it will be essential for these guys to mesh quickly in order to be ready for the Memphis game. Also, it will be great to see Roy during the OOC season; in the past, he's turned on the dominance only later in the year but struggled somewhat with the smaller guys guarding him in OOC. He's probably been working a lot on being able to work against shorter, faster defenders who front him, so hopefully we'll be able to see this work pay off. Then there's the element of seeing the development of PEJ, DaJuan, Vernon, Jeremiah, etc... Hopefully all cylinders will be firing next weekend!

At the open practice two weeks ago, he didn't have anything on his foot and was shooting merrily away.

But seriously folks... I couldn't be more excited for this game. I couldn't agree more. I am so ready for this season. I do wish that a final four team could get a little more national TV coverage, but Chvotkin is a very nice fallback position.... Let's go Hoyas!

I'm very excited for the start of the season. It looks like the radio coverage is TBA right now, so I'll have to wait and see if I'll be able to pick up Rich over the internet for this one. It would be nice to see the guys in a good groove to start the season in this game, but as long as it's a "W" and we can work out some kinks/scrape off some rust......I'll be happy.
In some "almost great news", Syracuse had to fight back from a deficit in the last few minutes to beat the mighty College of Saint Rose (in the Albany area)......I think I could have caught that game on TV here and I almost wish I had. Nothing like starting the season out watching Magoo's boys struggle against a Division II school!!! BEAT WILLIAM AND MARY!!!!!!
