FYI the Athletic Training Facility, Multi-Sport Facility, and New Science Center were all unanimously approved by the Zoning Commission Monday night. The Commission took the rare step of issuing a bench decision (typically the Commission waits until its next public meeting to issue its decisions), based on the University's submissions as well as the excellent testimony from its experts, coaches, and students. Those speaking regarding the need for the facilities included Director of Athletics Bernard Muir, Coaches Thompson and Urick, and a number of students from all disciplines, including the athletic teams and science program. And a big shout out to members of the pep band who cancelled practice to show up in support.
The testimony was compelling -- when asked whether Georgetown was trying to keep up in an "arms race" with other universities for bigger and better facilities, the coaches and students suggested that, rather, right now were playing with slingshots and we're just trying to catch up.
All in all, it was a great evening. I expect there will be an article in the Hoya tomorrow or Friday detailing the hearing. For now, Georgetown has cleared another hurdle.

So, what is the next hurdle? Back to the OGB to decide whether there are enough windows in the design?

So, what is the next hurdle? Back to the OGB to decide whether there are enough windows in the design? Yes, the University said they would go back to OGB to address the design of ATF. They requested -- and secured -- flexibility from the Zoning Commission on the design of the ATF, so that they wouldn't have to return to zoning if the building design changes in response to OGB.

Any news on what the "new" MSF is going to look like? Sticking to the old plans? How about the ATF? Can anybody (Dan, perhaps) provide links to what all three projects are supposed to look like?

Wow -- this is great news, and a sign that Georgetown can move very quickly when it wants to!

So all we need is the OGB approval to start fundraising right?

So all we need is the OGB approval to start fundraising right? Fundraising is not contingent on zoning--this could have, in theory, started months ago. Given how Georgetown struggles to secure major gifts, this may prove to be the biggest hurdle of them all.

Given how Georgetown struggles to secure major gifts, this may prove to be the biggest hurdle of them all. However, there has been a rumor floating since Ted Leonsis held that big party at his mansion for the team that he would make a major donation towards the development of a practice-only facility on campus. That being said, it would be nice if the University would get other alumni involved immediately after this gets approved for construction.

nice hoya article how can you turn roy and jt3 down gohoyas and SEND MONEY NOW Coach Urick and the captains of the men's and women's lacrosse teams also presented very compelling testimony. It was really hard to turn them down as well! (and the students speaking about the science building and on behalf of the campus also did an excellent job!)

GREAT news, and great to hear such multi-dimensional support for the projects from the members of the University community.
As for fundraising - this has been such an issue for GU for so long. I already give as much as my law school debt/meager salary allow, but how can the University do a better job of getting well-heeled alums to give the big bucks?

I think Ted has many financial and personal reasons to try to make this happen. An on-campus facility that improves the product that he, in essence, sells at the verizon center (he is a part owner of the building) without competing with it (no on-campus arena) makes perfect business sense. Why wouldn't he support it? That fact that he is an alum and a very big fan would only seem to augment this interest.

The University is in the silent stage of their next capital campaign. I imagine it will officially kick off with the announcement of a couple of big name gifts in various different areas. Right now, they are just trying to secure these gifts. However, as I understand it, athletics are not the focus of the campaign...but they could be part of it. Fingers crossed.

GU needs some serious money to start moving some of these projects into the "Completed" column. I'll settle for just the "funded" column.
