...he lived up to his slimy reputation with a blatant, slimy quote. It was a medical device conference and he was a keynote speaker promoting his new book.
On the bright side, he did give props to us when he talked about how he joined the BE back in the day and had to recruit around the country to compete with Georgetown "who really had it going on then, and by the way, they are very hot again and have a great thing going again here in DC."
On the slimy side, he talked about how in recruiting you don't always tell the truth (unlike how you need to be truthful in the medical business) because "when I am in the home of a 6'9" guy who wants to be point guard, I say sure, you can be point guard--and I'm thinking, 'in this house'. When they show up in September, I say, 'Remember that guy in your house? He's not here. You are here," then he laughs and says they have to accept it, that's the way it is. Yikes! There was some (nervous) laughter, and a lot of surprised looks. Basically, his point was tell what you need to in order to get them. SLIMY.
Just surprised he was so blatant, and how it came out of nowhere, apropos of nothing.

Calhoun's not the only one. I think 90% of the recruits are lied to in one way or another.

That may be, it was just surprising to have it be an open topic of discussion in a public forum brought up for no reason by the coach himself.

More Calhoun: sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=3050228&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab3pos2He seems to really be embracing the role of slimeball in his old age, almost like he's marking off his territory now that Huggins is in the league. My favorite part is where he says Rudy Gay changed his mind and wanted to come back but "cut his ties academically" (wah, wah, wah), and selling out Josh Boone and AJ Price. I can't fathom sending my kid to play for that guy.

That was a hell of an article - to summarize Calhoun was given talent, an easy schedule, and athletes and couldn't adjust his system to them. He just played mind games with them and is still blaming them a year later. Greg, that's quite a team to join.

I attended the 2006 NCAA tournament game at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia at which highly ranked UConn played upstart Univ of Albany. Calhoun sulked throughout the first half. From the mid-point of the half he turned the coaching over to George Blaney, ex-Holy Cross coach and now Husky bench coach. At timeouts he stood with arms crossed and said nothing nothing to this team. I have no doubt he reamed out his under-performing charges at halftime who proceeded to eventually overwhelm the opponent late in the second half. Next year when you watch UConn play, watch what happens when one of his players screws up. Like curs who have been beaten too much, their instinctive first look is to the bench. They see a sneering Jim Calhoun. Contrast his bench demeanor with that of JTIII. Coaching is a tough business. You can only put 5 of 12 players on the court at a time and those five must share one ball. That being said, you just don't see the histrionics and the upstaging of players that Jimmy does out of JTIII.
I do like some things about Calhoun. He bleeds Big East Basketball. His decision not to play traitor BC resonates with me. He spent his early career at UConn trying to compete with GU, and he seems pleased we are back.

Personally I hate everything about Calhoun. Maybe thats because I'm from Conneticut, where mens basketball wasn't created until the late 90's early 2000's. Everything before that just didn't exist. And I wouldn't be too sure about his policy with BC. www.courant.com/sports/hcu-uconncal-1009,0,5208286.story

I hated UConn before I ever applied to GU. Tate George in the Meadowlands did that to me (I still swear he didn't get the shot off on time - and there was a rule change after that game if I remember correctly regarding how much time is left and being able to turn and shoot after an inbounds.)

Unfortunately, he did get it off in time, and it irritated me to no end that Clemson lost that game. The only ACC teams I cheered for were the non-North Carolina teams. I think they beat Duke and the Tigers out-BIG UNLV for the national title. Thankfully, the Runnin' Rebs had a couple of cans of Whoop-A$$ waitin' for the Devils...

Cliff Ellis was a lot nicer guy and probably as good a coach for Clemson as Rick Barnes, IMO.

His decision not to play traitor BC resonates with me. He spent his early career at UConn trying to compete with GU, and he seems pleased we are back. 1. Calhoun didn't treat that team in the beginning of the season as he did in the end. i went to the Maui tourney that season, sat 2 rows behind every uconn game and he coached his butt off in a calm fashion, barely raising his voice even when guys made bad decisions. he tried to teach that team, but they thought they were so good that they did not need a coach. i fully understood Calhoun's frustration. if they aren't going to listen why keep talking? the fact that they were so talented and kept winning games that they did not put forth 100% effort the entire game only made matters worse. that team simply lacked a vocal vet leader ala the past uconn title teams to put the talented pups in place when needed. if you ever want to question Calhoun's coaching abilities, just watch the title game against duke and how he made a fool of coach k. 2. i don't know about you, but i would much rather have a sneering Jim Calhoun than a sneering jt2. the verbal lashing jt2 gave to players during games were unreal at times. i can only imagine what went on in practice. 3. Calhoun is old school and jt3 is new school. one has several national titles and believes he does not have to change his approach to today's player. jt3 on the other hand is younger, and understands upstaging guys does not work these days. again, jt2 had the same issues in the later stages of his career.
