Well, I had another experience last night that made me damn proud to be a Hoya. I was at “Alive After Five” after work last night here in Charlotte . For anybody that has worked in New York and did the Moran’s thing (outdoor party on the water, down by the World Trade Center ), this is a similar type gig. Well, aside from the fact that there is no water within 20 miles, there are lots of jean shorts, wife beaters, and goatees, but that's beside the point. In both places, there is some very good scenery for the young, male professional, if you know what I mean (bridge and tunnel crowd, anyone?). Well, in Charlotte , we have the same kind of influx of talent, but this would be the Gastonia and Rock Hill crowd. Lots of done up southern lasses, lots of beers, lots of sun (a wonderful 95 and 100% humidity..have to love Charlotte in the summer). All in all, a great time.
So last night, I head to the party after I work out and run into my boss. He grabs me, and tells me to come outside to meet an acquaintance of his. It is none other than Eric “Sleepy” Floyd. Granted, Sleepy played at Georgetown well before my time (he informed me that his freshman season was 1978…which is also the year of my birth) so he got to be a part of the very beginning of the modern era of Georgetown hoops (Patrick Ewing was a freshman during his senior year). He was in town for business (he splits his time between Houston and DC, for the most part) but unfortunately, he was also in town to see his ailing mother in Gastonia . All of that aside, it was a pleasure to speak with him. He had no problem at all talking to me even though he had people coming up to him every 5 minutes to say hello. I told him how great it was to see him at the 100th anniversary game and he told me it was one of the real highlights of his life to be on that court in front of the fans. He also said that he noticed he got the second most cheers…after big Pat! He told me that he was very in tuned with the team this year and was very proud of their success. He mentioned that he was in Atlanta and was very dejected after the game. But he quickly followed up that with, “I was in Jersey to see us whoop up on Carolina , so that made me happy”, much to the chagrin of all of the Tarheel fans around us. Sorry for the long story, but it was a real treat to meet him. A very well spoken, well dressed, impressive guy that didn’t have to take the time to speak to me, but he did. It was great to see him so enthused with Georgetown and the way the program was being turned around under JT III. He did say to me that he expected the administration to get something done with JT III in the very near future, because if they didn’t, the school would be “in a world of hurt”, as he said it. Let’s hope he is right. After meeting him, I remembered this article by the Sports Guy on espn.com. I realize that I might not be able to attach espn articles on hoyasaxa.com, so if it needs to be removed, please do so, and I apologize. HOYA SAXA!!
