Didn't need the microphone guy this time. The real one showed up. And scored plenty. Beyond Belief 68 DCX 64After missing a free throw that could have tied the game seconds earlier, Chris Wright rose from the wing and drained a game-tying three pointer with 26 seconds remaining. Would the Kenner League--after an endless string of monotonous single digit victories--finally see a little drama? Not quite. BB converted a layup with 11 seconds to go, and Greg Monroe's short jumper from the baseline drew iron with five seconds remaining. There went the undefeated season. Greg Monroe: 15 points, 6-10 FG, 1-3 FT, 6RB, 3A, 3TO, 1STLCan't say he isn't trying. Too much in my opinion has been made so far about Greg and his proficiency with his right hand (to the 25% of Hoyatalk* with minds of a 13 year old--grow up!). (*Okay, 85%) On the real, probably not realistic to expect Greg on August 1 to be floating in bank shots with his right hand and have become the king of ambidexterity. This being said, we'd probably all sleep easier on February 1 if he weren't getting rejected so consistently when he goes to his right. Just doesn't quite get enough power and lift when he goes that direction, and appears a bit off balance every time he does so. He favors the left--no question--but again the point of these summer league games isn't the bolded part above these paragraphs, but the items you can underline and say...he's working on that. And he is. What he still does very well is pass out of the post, and had a couple pretty assists and other swell passes that didn't result in baskets. Chris Wright: 12 points, 4-6 2pt, 1-3 3pt, 2-4 FT, 2RB, 0A, 5TO, 1STLThis one's probably the first time I'd have been happier if Chris Wright had been more selective and careful. I'll defend his willingness to charge at the basket on every possession if he darn well pleases--it's AUGUST, we can all use a fun vacation--but he turned the ball over several times trying to do too much, whether it was splitting two defenders off of the dribble, or trying to thread it too fine on a fast break. Chris isn't a mystery, especially during the summer. I suppose the whole thing could rub some the wrong way, if theyre interested in assists or something. Then he goes out and does something like the final basket--the tying three which he set up by obliterating his defender with a 360 dribble along the sideline. You know what, you go ahead and keep it son. Just be a little careful in the future. [AHEAD: The Big East hits 34th street]

Driving up the hill on 34th street leaving M, a sport utility vehicle parked along the street. New Jersey license plate. Two college decals emblazoned across the rear window:
Syracuse and Villanova
Some weeks ago, I posted on the Blue and Gray Board a question as to what makes one a "native" of a particular city. It was brought about by my meditation around the time about the transient nature of DC, of regional identity, and something to do with the Real World DC house in Dupont Circle.
It occurred to me--how much you want to bet the owner of that car is somehow also affiliated with Georgetown. It's probably their other two siblings who went to the Philly area and Magnitogorsk for college, and their younger bro is probably headed to Boston College next year.
All this is to say--if you catch anyone at Verizon next year in the student section with a Nova or Syracuse shirt, ask for some student ID, but remember it's probably someone with a legit student ID who put them there in the first place.
CLYDE'S 67 Premier Athletics 57
It was over when the real KD threw it off the backboard to himself and threw it down with 1:30 to go to put Clyde's up by double digits. Probably the most interesting thing that happened all night.
Jason Clark: 18 points, 7-13 2pt, 0-1 3pt, 4RB (3 off), 3STL, 2 BLK, 0 TO
Near the end of the first half, Jason was dribble up court near the midcourt line at around half speed. And in the blink of an eye, he went straight to fourth gear and blew about three defenders away. Haven't seen that kind of giddy up in some time from a Hoya guard. On the next possession, bookended it by flying in from the perimeter and outleaping the entire roster for an offensive rebound.
It was all about the crazy speed and athleticism today. The little guard made the most noise with his two hard blocks, high in the air to swat away the offerings. But he made the lasting impression by pushing the ball up the court and making things happen.
You almost forget how gosh darned scared you were when he handled the ball last season. Though the summer league is never the greatest judge of these things, to my eye his improvement on the dribble is the most dramatic improvement of any player's single skill set I've seen this summer.
Throwing in some nice pull up jumpers as well, another weapon in the arsenal. Lots to like here.
Henry Sims: 8 points, 4-8 2pt, 6RB, 1A, 2TO, 1BLK
Ooooooof. Ugly first half for Sims--0 points and only a single board.
To his credit he got off the deck and began the second half with buckets on his first two possessions.
An odd game in a few respects.
Offensively, the scoreline is lower than normal, but I thought he did one thing better than ever on offense tonight--running the floor. He's sprinting down there, and you get the sense that given limited minutes and a slower tempo during the regular season, he'll be fit enough to at least push it some to most of the time and beat guys down the court or get into better scoring position.
Defensively, not quite as inspiring. Seemed out of position a lot and certainly wasn't fighting as hard as could be for defensive rebounds...his numbers came later in the game. Reasonably athletic and big frontline for PA, but not anything that should have affected things as much as they did. Probably needs to battle more.
So one up, one down for the night. Definitely improving overall.

Halftime of the Tombs-We Are One game hit around 10:00pm tonight...and it was as if half the crowd's New Jersey plated SUVs were going to turn into pumpkins. Usually that kind of exodus is reserved for the end of the last GU-affiliated game on a KL weekend session. Turns out--working people have bed times. So maybe I'm not quite as old as I thought. (More likely: I'm just going to be sleepier at my desk tomorrow morning.) TOMBS 67 WE ARE ONE 53Even Rodney didn't seem that much into it--although he arrived 5 game minutes into the action and immediately announced his presence by screaming at one of his players. This one was also over around 2 minutes from time, as Tombs took a double digit lead. Lots of regulars weren't around tonight, so the action was not quite as expected--in result or quality of play. You know who was probably the MVP tonight? Chris Braswell. Austin Freeman: 13 points, 5-11 2pt, 0-1 3pt, 3-3 FT, 11RB, 3A, 3TOA much more subdued but much "smarter" game tonight IMO. Now, on Austin's lowest scoring game of the summer you aren't going to see a corresponding spike in assists--but I assure you, dude was running that team tonight. Slower pace, more chances to get teammates involved, less of an open invitation to the party and the front of the rim. Like it both ways really, and he didn't exactly disappoint on the attacking front, although he made his money on transition as well vice going from the perimeter. A sweet fall away jumper from the FT line--a go to move that he should be very confident using during the season. Don't get caught up in the 11 rebounds--almost none of them were truly difficult, contested takes--tonight was a good night to make your money on the weak side rebounding lazy jumpers. Jerelle Benimon: 6 points, 3-4 FG, 1RB, 2A, 2BL, 1TOHe was kind of an off man out tonight, as the Tombs feature a frontline of him, Chris Braswell, and another big man who functioned as the center. Don't think Jerelle really qualifies as anything of a 3 position, so the result was the lane got mighty clogged. And Chris Braswell happened to have a pretty darn good game, and the other center was a athletic fiend on the glass. So it was harder to make an impact. Best play of his night was an assist--Jerelle grabbed a long rebound at the FT line and in one motion whipped a no-look pass to Braswell for a layup. Tough with that lineup, because he's gonna see the bench for several minutes at a time during KL games. Hollis Thompson: 5 points, 1-5 2pt, 1-4 3pt, 6RB, 1A, 1TOHe saw the locker room for a period in the first half with what looked like a contact lens issue. Not sure if that affected the shot at all. He's certainly athletic--but tonight I did detect a bit of the shoot first, ask questions later mentality. Often he receive a pass on the wing, take perhaps and dribble and hoist it. To be fair, dude has a nice stroke and is composed getting up for a shot. But a little discretion is in order here. He seemed to tire again at the end of the game, and this definitely affected his work rate on defense. Rodney definitely rides him hard, and sticks him in a 2-2-1 zone press and a high tempo offense, so he's certainly training to run a lot. Dunno if JT3 will be as adventurous as the screamer. ------------------------------------------------------ Song of the moment I wrote this sentence: Calloway: I Wanna Be Rich: One of those videos that tells you everything you need to know in the first five seconds...if you could figure out exactly what that all means. My mother was obsessed with this song when it came out. I can't confirm whether or not she heard it on MTV's "Street Party" ------------------------------------------------------ Only one KL game tomorrow w/ GU teams: DCX and WAO at 8:25. Just a heads up...bout 90% sure I'm gonna take the night off, watch the Alonzo Mourning episode of Homecoming, and get that decent night of sleep I've been chasing for what seems like a couple weeks now. It's okay to admit it, you're still listening to Calloway.

you might want to check your math from the first game. Using your numbers which match my numbers chris had 13pts and greg had 13pts.

Thanks for the recap Fl, its greatly appreciated. I don't think the problem people have with Greg, well atleast my problem, is that he doesn't have a strong right hand, its that I have yet to see any semblence of a right hand. Last weekend I saw him go up for many-layups on the right side with his left hand, sometimes wide open sometimes contested and he got blocked. For a D1 basketball player that, quite frankly, is just horrible. You learn to shoot with the right hand on the right side in Rec leagues. 90% of the people on this board could shoot a layup with the correct hand on both sides. Now I am not saying he CAN'T do it, I just haven't seen him do it. Thats really the only improvement I wanted to see from him, being able to take a layup with the correct hand on the correct side. I didn't see it last weekend, doesn't mean its not there or isn't coming, I just haven't seen it. He is going to his right more which is an improvement, but won't be that effective until he can finish with the right SOMETIMES. All that said Greg is a really good player, I don't mean to bash him, I think he has all the potential in the world, he just has to develop the threat of using his right. Other than that I was very happy with what I saw from him last weekend. I did however see him throw down a dunk with his right hand in warmups, so there is hope for him yet.

agree with most i do think a few things in the second hafl henry much more hustle and tough.. jason pretty awesome austin steady greg looked kinda outa sinc.. benjamin gave some good looks and effort.. chris more outa control.. and as for hollis he had like three rebbies two assists and a bucket in the first couple of minutes. than his teamates no other hoyas didnot look for him he got frutstrtated and stood out asking for the bal to take threes but as somebody said IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A TEAM TO GET NEGATIVE ASSITS and i said maybe in this game he still tryed to pass and hustle but his teamates NO HOYAS and maybe some maryland guys didnt pass especialy to him and jacked it up or went to the hole if htat continues i hope he goes inside and gets the rebbies and puts em back up.. in the jt3 system he will flourish passing huslting d etc and then shooting as a TEAM just my thoughts not going tommarrow so await flhoyas reports will be sharing dinner with a friend and watching zo at 7pm on espn. yup cant wait..

He likely wasn't. He was likely wearing Underarmour, which was started by a Maryland grad.

Thanks for the recap.
It is interesting to see the numbers after the game, but from an impression standpoint JC blew everyone else out of the water. He was setting up his teammates well, looking to give Sims the ball where he could do something with it, using his fourth gear, and had some great steals. His perimeter shots look good too. Moreover, everyone looked excited to play with him as he really shares the ball, and (at least us Hoya fans) were in anticipation as to what he would do next - blow by, defensive play, etc. That rebound he stole from running from the perimeter all the way underneath the hoop was impressive - and hard to believe that his abilities/effort won't translate during the season if they are exhibited during summer league. In short, whereas we all wanted him to come back with a tighter handle, he seems to have raised us and showed us a lot more - we'll hope he brings it Big East time naturally with more seasoning. Wright, on the other hand, had no assists the entire game and plenty of turnovers (listed as five), some of the "pass to a person who isn't within ten feet variety". Just thinks he got caught without a clear idea of where the play is going to develop, whereas JC had everyone on the same page. I liked Sims' activity - at least he was agressive and tried out different moves - which looked fluid despite some rimming out.
Having watched Beasley and Durant in Kenner League, it is amazing to see how fluid each's game is, pulling up from NBA range with ease to knock down three pointers, or finishing around the rim. Then again, those are some unique 6'10" guys even for the NBA...

which one? 40? And benimon hasn't looked bad to me. He didn't have man rebounds yesterday but besides that his stat line was pretty good yesterday 3-4 from the field 2 blocks. He looked fine to me.

FL, I made similiar comments about Hollis a couple of days ago and got blasted on this board. To that, I really followed him closely last night, and he made a lot of passes to his teammates, and he got a few more touchs because his teammates actually passed to him. He did lack his normal hustle, many times being the last one down the floor on offense. But then again, there are a lot of shooters on his team.

Jason Clark was the best Hoya by miles last night. I think you shorted him at least one three pointer though which he drained from the top of the arc. I know it's only Kenner, but he's the only one I see play consistently with fire. That being said, it's amazing to me how having an NBA star on your team can actually hurt your team. I was hoping that Kevin Durant had changed his stripes, but he played 2 games last night with the GTown guys (first with Chris and Greg and second with Henry and Jason) and I thought he made them both worse. He hogged the ball, shot at will (and not particularly well for a shooter like him), shied away from rebounds, and played no D. It looked like Chris and Greg got sick of even trying to do anything. He was simply awful to watch. Can't believe a team with Greg, Chris and Kevin Durant lost, even in summer league, to a bunch of nobodies.

I know it's only Kenner League and I'm only reacting to what others have seen and posted but how can we not start Jason Clark? In addition to the offense others have commented on, he is by far the best defensive guard on the team. What is the risk of not starting him?

I suppose you could argue that we should see come regular season how he plays - also may be be good to have him and Sims (since they have been playing w/ each other) providing offense off the bench if Vaughn starts with Greg. I'm sure (I hope) he will get his minutes...

Before the first game, I would have set the line at DCX -30 or something. Wright, Monroe, Durant, and Mo Creek shouldn't be losing to a bunch of scrubs. Sure, Isiah Swann eventually showed up, but come on.
Agreed that Clark was by far the best Georgetown player last night. He is easily our quickest and most athletic guard in years.
Hollis was definitely jacking shots, but that team is such a disaster you can't read much into it. Everyone is just looking for theirs, and Hollis was visibly frustrated when his teammates missed him for easy dunks/layups. He probably figured that since everyone else was firing away, he might as well join in.
As for Benimon . . . well, he looks like Wattad did in summer league - random mid-major filler rather than a Georgetown player.

In addition to the offense others have commented on, he is by far the best defensive guard on the team. What is the risk of not starting him? Ignoring the "it's only Kenner League" part of it, which is certainly true... If Jason's handle is really this strong, the player that likely gets squeezed a bit this year is Vee. His primary route to minutes would be backup ballhandler to Chris if Jason was as shaky as last year. Since it looks like Jason can be the backup PG, I can see the guards more or less shaking out like this: Wright: 30 minutes Clark: 30 minutes Freeman: 30 minutes, about 10 at SF Sanford: a few minutes here and then with potential to steal from Hollis, etc.

I feel last nights games were ok. Greg and Wright looked bored. Austin looked happy to have help last night.Clark was awesome. Benimon looks more the role of a walkon. Henry and Hollis got limited touches so I give them an incomplete. I feel we will be fine but looking at the big east banner made me realize there are no off nights in the big east. #40 on te tombs was Taylor. He was a man on the boards. Where is Julian?
P.S>- wasnt it funny to see Rodney asks players to turn their jerseys in so he could give it to Adrian Bowie, Darnel lDodson and Dino Gregory.
