How can you say we played poor 3 defense? Rautins was shooting NBA range one's off of catch and shoot picks all night and Nichols was throwing up circus shots that had no business being anywhere even near the backboard. It was those ridiculous three's and our own inability to make any during tonight's game that were the back breakers and made the score seem way worse. Rautins is a D- III caliber player. He shouldn't have even gotten any of those shots off. Letting him beat us is a disgrace.

All of Rautins threes were 2+ feet beyond the three point line. I suppose we could have gone box and one, but that's a difficult three to stop for college players.
People who call Rautins a D-III player are the same people who called Wallace that.
If you can shoot, dribble and play smart, you can be a good player.

But Rautins can't dribble. He is incapable of doing anything other than catching and shooting. So, charge him as soon as the ball is thrown his way, force him to pump fake, and then force him to make some sort of move after that. Does anyone feel that he could drive and score on our big guys? Heck no.
We let him beat us doing the ONE decent thing that he can do on the basketball court.

I wish we had a D-III player who could catch and shoot lights out.

Plus, Jay Bilas brought Rautins lollipops back in the day.

I wish we had a D-III player who catch and shoot lights out. Omar Wattad will catch & shoot lights out for us. So will Austin Freeman. Jon Wallace usually does shoot lights out, but yesterday he didn't. I'll take Wallace this year and the three of them next year over Rautins every time.

It was more a tongue and cheek statement about Rautins D-I Qualifications, he obviously belongs in that program, son of a famed alumnus who has a special skill. Excellent shooter.

He has a nice set shot- I'll give him that. But the point is that he cannot do anything else, and we let him beat us with his one basketball skill.

The one thing SU is always good at on offense is getting their catch and shoot guys wide open looks pretty regularly. It is frustrating as hell.....just put someone on the guy and don't let him shoot, but I seem to say this about somebody on SU every year and it is still all they do.....catch and shoot.

I agree that our poor shooting was a huge factor in our defeat. I have to disagree, however, about letting him shoot.
A guy like that requires a concerted effort on defense. All the players need to recognize his skills and limitations. We sagged off him too far, and when he caught the ball we didn't charge him nearly hard enough. The way to defend him is to BEG him to try to drive to the basket. Perhaps we didn't let him shoot, but we did not defend him appropriately.

Nah. 'Cuse set some good screen. Rauton got his shots off fast. He's shooting well and he is going to get his. That's OK, ' cause if the Hoyas are playing well, Rautins and Nichols are n pt enough to beat them. Unfortunately, the Hoyas were not playing well.
As an aside, I have to give some credit to Roberts if he is really playing with a partially torn meniscus. I know from experience how painful that is. He is tough dude to be playing all season with an injury like that.

Yeah, Roberts deserves props for playing through that type of pain.
