Wanted the board opinion on this. Last year there was a huge discussion about what would be better for recruiting/reputation/prestige. A BET title versus a sweet sixteen appearance.
Now that we are a year away from that. Do you think people more remember syracuse run through the BET versus our sweet sixteen appearance. I might be slightly biased and it might be because we are doing so much better then cuse this year, but i feel like our sweet sixteen appearance was better. (though this year i wouldn't mind both and more)...
By the way do you think they would put a BET title banner in phonebooth? or McDonough?

Sweet 16 (esp. if the team wins a reg. season Big East Title)
in the NCAA tourney.. everybody wants it and you are playing against the elite teams in the nation..
in the B.E.T. a team could go on a nice little run (like Cuse last year) and then lose in the 1st round (like Cuse last year).. but ultimately, what comes of that? its disappointing
it's nice to use that as a fallback if you screw up in the Big Dance, but clearly you would rather perform well on the biggest stage (if you HAVE to choose)
achievement in the NCAA's outweighs achievement in the Big East Tourney

BIG EAST TITLE no doubt. We have been tied with CT. for the most a few years. If you don't think that people remember BE tournament games, get yourself a Friday or Saturday ticket.

Not even close. I'd take a BET title over everything but a Final Four appearance. We used to absolutely dominate it and we haven't won it in nearly 20 years. That's hard to believe. Time to get back to being the Beast of the East.

Sweet 16, although I'd like to do more than just appear there.

BET, not even close. there is only 1 BET but 16 sweet sixteens.
now if you ask BET vs. Elite 8, thats a toss up in my mind, but prob elite 8.
BET vs. Final 4, i go with Final 4.

i think it depends on the situation...If you have already earned an at-large bid through your season play, then I'll take the sweet sixteen, because at the end of the day that NCAA tourney is what you play for. If you are a bubble team (like 'cuse was last year) then the BE title extends your season and gets you to the dance, so obviously you take that.

Is there any debate on what is more valuable, BET title vs. regular season title? I think I'd prefer a regular season title. Conference tournaments always seem so anomalous. Am I alone?

Sweet 16...no doubt. I'm in this to win the whole thing and you can't win it all unless you get to the second weekend.
Historically teams that win the conference tourney actually struggle a little in the NCAAs. See Cuse last year. It takes a lot out of a team to play 3 or 4 days in a row.
I want it all, but I'd rather have the regular season title (actually means more to me) and then the Sweet 16...well I want more than that, but I'll start there.... ;D

Sweet 16. Does anyone really remember Cuse running the table last year? Don't think so. On the other hand, everyone remembers that we gave Florida their toughest challenge in the Sweet 16. In any event, this discussion will be academic in a couple of weeks since we will get to . . . - ooops didn't want to jinx that one.

Last year was different because there were two elite teams in the Big East and the conference was the best in the country. I'd go with the Sweet 16 this year as a result but it's hard to argue that cutting down the nets at MSG is less valuable than winning two games in the NCAAs.

Big East Tournament...Ask Othella Harrington and Friends
I personally am more hurt over the BET Finals loss to UConn than the loss to UMass (damn it New England!) that year, and that would have sent us to the Final Four... Maybe it has something to do with the dramatic nature of the former...
But Sweet 16? Yea, that's nice I guess, but we spend the majority of the year playing Big East Teams...the OOC Schedule is geared towards league play, not NCAA play...We made the Sweet 16 under Coach Esherick... How would we look back at him if his resume included a BE Title instead?
And It should be clear about which one is a greater accomplishment, considering how many Big East Teams have made the sweet 16 vs BE Tourny Champions, especially since we last won it.

Time to get back to being the Beast of the East. Agreed. A Sweet Sixteen loss gets you a Coke and a smile (or a milkshake, if RDF's around). G'Town has to start racking up titles of SOME kind, if we're going to be making all these pronouncements of how they're "back" and a dominant force in college hoops.
