I disagree. I really think nova looked awful. This is not to take anything away from their hustle, because it seemed clear to me which team played harder and wanted it more, but at the same time hustle does not equal skill. Nova was sub par and played the way they had to win (a credit to their coaching). They did not win last night because they were more talented than us, but because we got out coached and because of our players' lack of ability and confidence to break the press.

I'm not talking about talent or offensive ability. I think we had them smoked in those two categories. But based on how their defense dominated our offense, I found myself wondering how we had scored 30 points in the first half. I'm of the opinion that Nova beat us more than we beat ourselves, and in this way I think I differ from just about everyone else on this board. To outcoach/outhustle/outplay (by whatever means necessary) and completely stifle this (GU) team is not the stuff of a team that stinks.

To outcoach/outhustle/outplay (by whatever means necessary) and completely stifle this (GU) team is not the stuff of a team that stinks. The only person who beat us on Nova was Clark. He played a very solid game but more importantly made all four of his free throws down the stretch (the only four that Nova attempted in the second half). Reality is we turned the ball over 22 times. When we average 61 possessions per game we really can't afford to turn the ball over 22 times. Couple that with the 67% free throw shooting and you have a tried and tested formula for losing basketball games. If we shoot 75% from the line that's an extra 2 points. If we turn the ball over 15 times (season average) and score the usual 1.1 points per possession, that's an extra 7-8 points. So, even discounting Wallace's gift layup when we were down by 4, we still win this game comfortably if we make two additional free throws and "only" turn the ball over 15 times... and boom goes the dynamite.

Their team defense completely shut down our offense (they beat us). Or did we allow ourselves to be shut down offensively by their team defense (we beat ourselves)? I personally think the first of those is more correct. But in the end I think we're all saying the same thing in that regard.
I'm saying that Nova isn't a bad team. Their team was GOOD enough to disable us to the extent that they did - JUST enough to win the game. There are so many factors that go into deciding a game (including free throws, offensive efficiency, and defense) - a team that can look ugly on offense but still win with its defense isn't necessarily a bad team. If you win all of your games in a season by final scores of 2-0, your offense sucks, but your defense is astounding enough to allow you to be considered a good basketball team. And of course, they didn't make the unforced errors that we did on the FT line - so what about that indicates that they're not a good basketball team?
First thing I said - I don't think Nova is bad. I don't think there was anything about their effort or play that indicated that they're an overall bad team.

Nova IS horrendous...on top of getting spanked against DePaul and losing to drexel, they looked disorganized and hot garbage-like against us. But they threw a simple press at us and we self-destructed. end of story. I will be shocked if nova makes it into the tournament this year.
and clark played a solid game, but so did scotty reynolds...sure he threw the ball away a bunch, but no more than sapp and wallace - plus he did what those guys could, drive and distribute, as well as hit the clutch jumper to put the game away.
but don't be deluded. this nova team is no barnburner. even with sumpter avg'ing 19.4, i dont think they finish better than 8-8

love tillmon.......freeman will be a better player. I would kill for a backcourt of bryant, tillmon and charles smith......Damn we had some ballers back in the day.

I said it at the beginning, I don't care who they lost to - I didn't see a bad/horrendous team beat Georgetown on Monday. In what regard did they look like garbage against us? Offense? I'm not denying that. The press itself may have been simple, but their individual and team defense was more physical and swarming than we were prepared to handle. It may have just been a matchup problem for us, but nothing anyone can say will convince me that Georgetown lost to an overall bad team the other night.

And Smitty may be my all-time favorite Hoya, although it's hard to choose, especially if I reach back as far as Sleepy. Who also wouldn't look too bad in our backcourt.

If the Wright-Freeman tandem is better than the Bryant-Tillmon one, we win a national championship in the next four years.
