6) I don't care what Pomeroy's stats say in this case... turnovers are killing us. This team does not value the ball, and as DFW pointed out in the chat, it is extremely difficult to win when you are not even getting up FG attempts. The fact we were up 6 at half after committing 13 TOs was a miracle in itself, and it just caught up to us later in the game when Nova decided they were going to finally hit a few perimeter shots. Actually, Pomeroy's stats say exactly that - TO's are killing this team. SFHoya99 had a post about it earlier today. I must be dyslexic. I read it as O-rebounding and FT% being more important (both of which we sucked at tonight too). I stand corrected.

If the box on guhoyas can be trusted. Roy did not actually attempt a shot tonight other than the ones on which he was fouled. He and Green combined for a total of 5 shots. Thats 5 as in 1 less than 6 and 1 more than 4. Thats only 5 more shots THAN MY DEAD GRANDFATHER TOOK TONIGHT. Our two POY candidates need to put up more than 5 shots. period.

4 LOSSES AND WE'VE NEVER BEEN LOSING AT HALFTIME. 6 POINTS AT HALFTIME, STRETCHED TO 9 EARLY AND WE BLOW IT. OPPONENTS MAKE ADJUSTMENTS, WE DON'T. This should be its own thread.

Very disappointing loss tonight. Here are the things that really stood out to me 1) There was WAY too much standing around on the offensive end. No movement. No back door cuts. We chucked up too many shots at the end of the shot clock. Coaching staff put out some atrocious offensive lineups out there including a 2 min stretch w/ Jonathan, Rivers, Ewing, Crawford, and Big Ticket. Its a little late in the season not to recognize who your offensive players are. 2) The press breaker was atrocious. Its not very hard to break a press breaker if you put the 7'2'' or even the 6'9'' guy at half court w/ 2 wing guys for him to throw the ball to over half court. Instead we kept three guys behind half court and (usually) Dajuan on one wing and Roy in the paint. It was only when the shot clock reached 27 or 26 that Roy would finally flash to the middle. We have too many athletes not to exploit a press like that. Coaching staff gets and F- for not making that adjustment. We tried to run the same press against Nova and they had a big man flash to the middle and broke it for a jump shot no sweat. Needless to say we didn't run the press again. 3) This season has the makings of Sweetney's sophomore year when we either blew out teams or lost close games. We lack the guard to create his own shot at the end of the shot clock... or game (Ashanti... we miss you). Instead, when we were down by 2 points, we tried to force an entry pass to Roy (who was defensed well all night). Turnover... game over. 4) Jerry... your teammates wear gray at home. 5) At least Florida is proving that Big Ten football was a total fraud this year. 6) I hope we blow out Pitt on Saturday. The sad thing about point #3 is that all Roy had to do was take one dribble and he had an easy 2 foot shot to tie the game. Instead, he makes the unnecessary extra pass and Summers is forced to take a shot from an awkward angle behind the backboard. Granted, he didn't get many opportunities all night, but he needed to convert there.

You can't shoot if you never have possession of the ball!!! How many shot attempts did the team have tonight? It's one thing to lose to Nova in a National Title game when they shoot the lights out--but to lose when BOTH teams played like manure--awful.

Scotty Reynolds owns our Backcourt I wouldn't say that - it was their team defense that killed us, not Reynolds. He played like a talented freshman. Decent game, but plenty of bonehead plays. The difference is, he was aggressive, he wanted the ball, and he wanted to score. The Hoyas don't seem to have a guy who has both the ability and desire to take the important shots. JW has the desire, but maybe not the overall talent. Maybe Summers...

my observations...
1)- Defense was pretty good. Didn't give up many clean looks from 3, (especially good job on Nardi), and didn't get eaten up by Sumpter. That said, Nova's execution did not look anywhere near crisp. Gtown plaers (and coaches) need to tweak their D against the high screen and roll -- they are going to lose to teams with good PGs until they learn to defend this. As a side note, Hibbert seems to pick up atleast one cheap foul a game trying to hedge the pick and roll -- this is costly.
2) inexcusable that we can't get Hibbert more touches. Our guards are afraid to throw lobs, our fwds seem to get every entry pass deflected. Saw many times on ball reversals where Hibbert would be open off the reversal and the wing man wouldn't fire it in -- he'd wait too long, let Hibbert get fronted again, and then look back to pass around the perimeter. Coaches can do more to get Hibbert touches -- and the players need to do better to get him the ball.
3) press break - why does everyone keep bashing our press break? The players broke the press EXACTLY how they are being coached to break the press -- and the they broke it successfully. They gave up very few turnovers off the press.
What they didn't do was attack the press AFTER they broke it. The key point here is that is clear that Gtown players are being coached to not attack after breaking the press.
Nova was not pressing to get turnovers (primarily), they were pressing to shorten our time in the princeton sets -- and really, never let us get into an execution flow.
I think JTIII and his staff need to expand their press break into a press break/attack -- a few minor tweaks (i.e. get your best playmaker to catch the "break" pass) and take advantage of the numbers. Rather than having Wallace/Jeff/Jessie in back court...have atleast one of them catching the pass to middle, and turn around and attack with numbers. If the coaching staff adjust, they'll suffer the consequences of the press without getting any positives (just as was evident tonight).
3) Wallace did not have a bad game -- I've seen posts indicating he played like a freshmen -- that's crazy talk. Wallace has been the most solid player in almost every game we've played this year. He always takes good shots and played just as he was coached. He's not a phenomenal drive/dish kinda guy, but he is solid and was not at fault tonight for our lack of press attack -- again -- seems to me that the coaches are telling our guys to not attack the press once it's broken.

9) We respond so poorly after losing a lead. I have no idea why, but it seems once we give up the lead, we never regain it. Happened against Oregon. And Duke. And tonight. Team needs to get mentally tougher down the stretch of games. You would've thought that we had enough guys on the squad who had "been through the wars" of last year and were experienced enough to deal with adverse situations. But that just hasn't been the case this year. I said it in chat, and I'll say it again: great teams find a way to win without playing their best, and we are not a great team yet because we can't steal wins when we don't deserve to come out with a W. Excellent point Rockaway

/\ Did Reynolds not absolutely do us in during the last 5 minutes...he made something happen every time he touched the ball. He had his fair share of screwups but the clutch buckets and his penetration outweighed the bad. Their team defense wasnt anything special. We just basically were giving them the ball. On the offense end for them...Reynolds and Clark is what gave them the W tonight

And once again I'll say this...
Chris Wright can't come soon enough. An actual point guard that knows how to help break a press and can actually shoot the basketball.

Has anyone ever seen a team that was worse at getting the ball into the post? When Roy gets good position, one of the following three things usually happens:
1 - The fans yell for the pass inside while we instead swing it around the perimeter again
2 - The pass arrives late, when Roy no longer has good position or a clear path to the basket
3 - The pass is tipped or stolen
Yea, Roy could have done a better job of getting position tonight - but this was honestly one of the worst efforts I have ever seen at feeding a big man.

Reynolds' charge and some out-of-control shots at the end could have cost them the game, but we were unable to capitalize. So, yeah, he did us in, but only because we did not have the ability to take advantage of his mistakes. Anyway, I came away impressed with him, given that he is only a freshman and has assumed lots of responsibility for that team.

How sad is it that in a tough Big East game--your FR--Summers and Macklin and PE JR were the ones to have us even competitively close? If not for those 3 kids--GU would've lost by 20 tonight and might not have scored 35 points. Bilas and Raf were PLEADING with Hoyas to ATTACK and this is exactly the same misery I saw in 2nd Half against Duke--albeit tonight was an all time low for me as a Hoya fan. To lose isn't bad. To be so disgustingly WEAK with ball and NOT ADJUST to what your opponent is doing is inexcusable. I mean, seriously RDF, get a grip. Tonight's loss sucked, no doubt, but all time low? Have you blocked out the entire Esherick era? Nova had a smart game plan and executed it well. The Hoyas are in trouble unless they improve a lot. But come on - this was nowhere near an all time low.

He's a talented kid, but plays a selfish game. Chris Wright is already a LOT better than Reynolds. Too bad he can't help us this year.
