Up: Attendance (9,654 at today's game according to yahoo vs. 7,526 at last year's home opener against Vandy...more impressive of a increase considering the opponents) Last year's game was over thanksgiving break, so i'm not sure its really all that impressive (granted many students had to miss the game due to housing selection).

Based on Chvotkin's call, not seeing the game: Up: 1. Free Throws (Jeff and Roy) 2. Taking care of business late in the game 3. Jon's play 4. Tyler's Hustle (rebounds are the greatest evidence of hustle in my mind) Down: 1. Getting the Ball Inside! (Jeff and Roy took only 19 of 53 shots) 2. Turnovers! 3. Roy playing with Force (I'm sorry but against a team this short, he should have 70+ FG%) 4. Newbies (No Points, 3 Reb, 1 Ast for Summers, Rivers, & PE Jr. in combined 29 mins. of play & where was Macklin?) 5. Jeff - 7 TOs.

Up - outrebounded Hartford 34-20. FTs made 19-6. Crawford rebounding. Wallace steady, as usual. Jeff, in spurts. Down - all the newcomers, especially Rivers who looked lost on offense (his injury really set him back). 3-PT shooting. Jeff 6 turnovers.
Now the team and all of us need to stop discussing whether we're a Final Four team rather than recognizing that every game must be played and won.

I think Hoyaboy really hit the nail on the head. Hartford really packed in the zone around Roy, sometimes using almost like a box and one or a zone double team to front Roy and get someone between him and the basket all the time. We moved the ball well, but not effectively. With few exceptions we never made a pass that really set up a smooth two-points, a la the back door offense.
Felt like we needed to drive a little bit more and kick to someone around the lane or the elbow rather than all the way back to three point land. Of course, we didn't drive a whole lot either.
My other biggest concern was defense, which I don't think we've mentioned too much. They were really really quick with the ball and we had a tendency to overreact and bite on fakes. They moved it to the open man quickly and got a lot of good looks. A better team with a post presence could be a big problem if we play like that down the line. We're going to have a height advantage against almost everyone this year, we can let them come to us.
My biggest upside would be one play actually, the possession after Dajuan airmailed a three pointer he came from across the court to completely anihilate a Hartford shot under the backboard. I realize this kind of counteracts my last point about overpursuing the ball a little bit but I'll contradict myself for two reasons: 1.) Good to see a frosh keep his head in the game after airmailing his first meaningful college shot and 2.) It was freakin' sweet!

tyler's 1-8 from 3 was within the flow of the offense i felt. though his form looked better this summer... im not sure why. like hoyaboy said, i think he was rushing it a lot of the time. he needs to keep shooting though because they were leaving him and sapp open... those guys need to get comfortable taking those shots. Crawford's shot looked like Bowman's shot at its worst today--just a flat, line drive. I'm not surprised at all that he missed so many--I didn't think any of the shots really looked like they had a shot to go in.

Good call on us biting on too many fakes. There were times were it seemed like half our team was in the air at once on D. On one play in particular, Roy's man beat him under the basket, but was probably going to get swatted or have to make a really tough shot over Roy. Instead, Crawford came flying in and fouled the guy, and Roy was visibly Editeded and yelled at Crawford.
Sorta strange that while we showed too little aggression on offense, we often showed too much on D.

Up: Rebounding Crawford leading the way. FT's Jeff and tyler both look like they've worked very hard in this area. Down: Defense. Absolutely Horrible. I hope coach works on this. Lost assignments. too many wide open lay ups for them. poor switching on screens. Greatly over reacted to all fakes. Refs yeah i know you can't blame this result on them but they were pretty bad they were hackign roy and we were getting no calls while on the other end they called touch fouls agianst us.

Best shot - Jeff's under-and-over dunk after a really quick dribble to the basket. Why don't we see more of this from Jeff who sometimes seems to be passive?

Hartford's coach spent a decade as an assistant to John Chaney at Temple. The defense played today by Hartford brought back some unpleasant memories of the two games we played against Temple in recent years.

What was wrong with the crowd? Too many people sitting for that close a game.
Also there wasn't as much motion on offence as last year. Roy used to get the ball at the top of the key and it allowed an extra pass or screen. Nobody really did that in the half court this game.

I'm not surprised what happened to day.
I won't be suprised if this team continues to struggle for a while either. Right now, this looks like a JT2 team with the personnel. We got to get better with the perimeter players. Somebody needs to step up, or its going to be a long year.
Much work to be done.
This game should humble the team and folks rooting for the team thinking we can just walk into a National Championship.
Its time to get focused and realize we got an uphill battle.
A lot of hard work ahead, and hopefully improvement.

Question for those that went:
I assuming we were facing a matchup zone. Was there any attempt to overload a side and use short passes to get inside? Think back to when we obliterated Cuse last year for 3 halves -- the repetitive flash to the high post. Or did we just try to shoot over it over and over and over?

as in the other thread at the top i feel we did pretty much shoot over the top we tried to get it all the way into the low post to roy but i only remeber jeff flashing to the high post a few times and that was it.

Only was able to listen to the word picture from the good Dr., but here's my couple additional thoughts:
Upside:
* 29 minutes of playing time for freshman and PE Jr.
Downside:
* Only 9 assists on 22 FG made (~41%) vs. last years 65% average of FG made coming off of an assist

The offense was set up like this: 4 guys stood outside the 3 point line, 1 in the post. We'd mostly pass it around the outside, and on occasion go into the post. No high post work at all.

Think back to when we obliterated Cuse last year for 3 halves -- the repetitive flash to the high post. Or did we just try to shoot over it over and over and over? We didn't handle it NEARLY as well as we did vs. Cuse. Not even close, which was disappointing. I really wanted to see Jeff flash to the high post more. He and Brandon had a lot of success with that last year and I've always liked Jeff getting the ball there. He usually has the quickness to get by whomever is manning the lane for the opposition, or he has the vision to find someone cutting to the hole after a collapse. It just didn't happen today. Mostly we just worked the ball around... We didn't do very much of the usual dribble/hand-off stuff, just a 4 guys on the perimeter passing it, sometimes across the court. I wasn't too impressed with how the offense looked, but the D these guys played was probably the toughest style for us to match up against.
