A friend of mine attended today's scrimmage and Philly-MD all-star games last weekend. I was only able to talk to him for a few minutes, but this is what he told me about each event -
LaSalle Scrimmage: - the scrimmage consisted of 2 twenty minute and 1 ten minute game. - He estimated that the Hoyas won the 1st scrimmage by 4 points, the 2nd one by 15, and the 3rd one by approx 20. - Starting Lineup - Wallace, Sapp, Egerson, Green, Hibbert - Hibbert dominated the first scrimmaged. He is in great shape and displayed great hands. The fed him the ball repeatedly and must have been something like 10-12 on FGs. - Green was his usual all-around great player. Still needs to be more aggressive with his scoring. - Egerson is in really good shape and probably was the best player on the court for the 2nd scrimmage. - Summers was very impressive. Hit 3 3's. Staff expect hims to start sooner than later. He would push either Egerson or Sapp to the bench. - Crawford was solid off the bench. - Ewing added a lot of energy of the bench. - Macklin did not play because of a bruise tailbone. The staff feels that he is already the best rebounder on the team. Also, they were raving about his passing ability - he is one of the best passing big men they have ever coached. The previous comment really took me by surprise. - Rivers played pretty well. His biggest problem is that he plays too fast. - No surprise here - Recruiting wise the staff is focused on the class of 2008. - My friend was very impressed with the coaching staff. They do an excellent job teaching.
Philly-MD HS game - Chris Wright was terrific. Definite top 20 player in the country.

That's a great review. I am really excited about Egerson now.

Thanks for the report. Egerson playing well would certainly give us a more balanced lineup.
I suspect Crawford gets most of the backup guard minutes, which will leave Summers, Macklin and Ewing fighting for playing time in the frontcourt.

The comments about Macklin were surprising - I didn't see a lot in Kenner League that indicated he had that kind of skill set.

Wow, great report MJG. Amazing that the staff would even consider starting Egerson over Sapp at the 2 if Summers gets the starting call. Maybe Marc really has made the leap.

Great report, MJG. Positives all-around! What did your friend mean by the coaching staff is focused on recruiting the class of '08? Who said that?

The comments about Macklin were surprising - I didn't see a lot in Kenner League that indicated he had that kind of skill set. Maybe not in Kenner, but you could tell in the McD's game and the Jordan Game that he has very good vision. He didn't complete the passes (maybe because people weren't expecting them), but he made more than one pass behind him out of a post up position. Most big men don't have that kind of vision.

Quick. Someone tell Jerry Meyer about Vernon's skills. Maybe he'll drop him another ten spots. Why you're at it inform him about Chris Wright being a five star player too.

I saw something at the open practice that was just mindboggling from Vernon. After getting stuffed by Roy, he recaptured the ball and passed it around his head to Wallace for an open 3 -- all in one motion.
He's the kind of player, however, who, at first, may live up to his uniform number, which was previously worn by Bowman. Macklin has more athletic upside, but expect him to have Good/Bad moments at the outset.
Thanks, MJG, for the recap of the scrimmage. It sounds like we were a little slow off the bus but were in the groove after the juices started flowing.
On Edit: Good grief, MCI. Meyer is about as lost as lost can be as far as I'm concerned. Pete Carrill has forgotten more about basketball than Meyer will ever know.

I hear what you're saying, Jerz, but nearly every player has good and bad moments when they first start out. He will only remind me of Bowman if that Dr Jeckyl and My Hyde personality stays with him past his soph. season.
In other news after a unimpressive pre-season victory by their team, Syracuse fans are starting to consider that a 6-3 power forward masquerading as a guard with neither shooting skills or strong ballhandling abilities may not be the second coming of Carmello Anthony.

True enough, MCI. I only made the comparison because I think their good/bad moments have striking similarities, although Macklin does not willfully demonstrate poor basketball acumen as Bowman did with the throw dribble.
As for SU[cks], this is not surprising. They played exactly one week of good basketball last year and lost the person who allowed them have that one good week. You don't have to watch Harris for more than 10 minutes to figure out that he isn't exactly Steve Kerr from behind the arc or anywhere within for that matter.

Boeheim on Harris from Blue Ribbon:
"He will be the best freshmen in the country. He's a monster, the real deal. I don't see him here more than one year."
Way to put the pressure on your frosh, Jimmy.

Is it so surprising that Boehiem put pressure on one of his players? As long as he has someone to blame if they don't win - the school paper, a player, the refs - its becoming a tired act.

NICE REPORT MJG!! It's encouraging to hear that report, besides the injuries.... Nobody's even mentioned that if Summers cracks the starting lineup for Sapp down the line, we'd have 4 starters 6'8" and larger---- SWEET!!!

I interpreted the Summers thing as suggesting that Egerson would slide over to the 2, and Summers would play the three. That's feasible to me if Egerson's apparent improvement across the board plays out. But a Wallace, Summers, Ewing, Green, Roy lineup would put a ton of weight on JW as really the only guy who can put it to the floor reliably. I don't think that's in the cards.
PT is going to be tight as heck this year - a few really good players are barely going to see the floor.
