This morning's Washington Post reported that UMd has just publicly released the salaries of Gary Williams and Ralph Friedgen (following court instructions)... The Fridge makes $1.1M (base) per year, while Williams makes a base salary of $1.3 Million! With performance incentives, that can rise to $1.87M, and who knows how much more he makes from endorsements, summer camps, etc.
Makes me feel like Dennis Felton was probably waaay out of GU's league financially in this search, as were probably a number of other potential names.

Gary's base salary at UM is actually only $236,250. Connections from UM with local TV and radio net him $750,000. He gets $225,000 from Nike and about $60,000 from his camp. - Baltimore Sun
The big chunk of that (750K) has to do with the profitable success that UM basketball has become in the area. GU wouldn't have a problem with working out deals for that kind of $$ if they were making money on top of it (successful program). If we got exclusive coverage from Comcast, higher profile radio, etc. the coach's salary would skyrocket.

DonkDonk, thanks for the clarification -- the Sun does a much better job of clarifying than the Post, here's the quote... "Under the terms of Williams' contract, he can earn up to $1.87 million each year with bonuses and incentives, while Friedgen can earn up to $1.47 million under a similar agreement. Williams has a base salary of $236,250, and collects a guaranteed minimum of $750,000 from radio and television appearances each year as part of his package. He gets $8,000 each year to lease a luxury automobile (the coach drives a Toyota Sequoia), receives a 5 percent raise each year and gets a cost-of-living increase. Williams also gets $225,000 from his contract with Nike." www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/basketball/bal-te.sp.salaries28apr28,0,6835659.story?coll=bal-college-mbasketball Definitely an impressive figure no matter how it breaks down, and I wonder how much of the $500 grand in bonuses and incentives comes from the university...

One interesting corollary to this release, noted in today's Washington Times -- Coach Friedgen has a $50K bonus included in his contract if the entire football program stays out of legal and NCAA trouble for any given year. I suppose in some minds, this is an admirable cause, but what does it say that in addition to coaching duties, they have to pay the coach to keep players from getting arrested!? www.washingtontimes.com/national/20040428-120939-8135r.htm

It would be nice to get a sizable bonus for accomplishing something that is part of my job to begin with. I'll have to run this theory past my boss and see what he thinks.

But would it be 33% of your job, and would 99% of coaches be asking for a raise?
