I was flipping around the stations last night and caught the last part of Best Damn Sports Show's list of the 50 greatest sports blow-ups. I thought that having AI's "Practice? It's practice man, practice" as #6 was kind of goofy, not really a blow-up as much as a rant - but I chuckled when I saw that #11 was Esherick's explosion toward the BE refs and the hammering Sweets took - higher on the list than Knight's chair-throwing and some other meemorable moments.

AI's mom (Ann Iverson) was on the list as well. It was the one when she was in the truck with her friends telling the press to stay out of AI's and his wife's business.

If you guys are weird, put me on the list. I have a word document of the entire transcript of "The Rant."
But where in the hell can I get an audio file of it?

I didn't catch the show. Were they all verbal blow ups or did they have physical attacks like Zidane's head butt and Tyson's ear biting? Also how high on the list was the Calipari-Cheney incident? What about the pitcher who went nuts last year and attacked the cameraman ... who was that ... Kenny Rogers?

I've always enjoyed the Rome-Chris Evert Everett fight. Don't see that as much anymore.

We were talking about that famous Rome Show incident the other day. A friend of mine said that the blow up was because when they were negotiating with Everett's agent, Rome's people insisted that he wouldn't call him "Chris" on the air, but that the first thing out of Jim's mouth was "how 'ya doin' Chrissy?" I don't remember hearing that but if there was some detailed negotiations and the show assured Jim that they wouldn't use the "nickname" on that show, then I totally understand the blow up. That doesn't make it right, but I still understand it.

Super-nice that FOXSports included the video clip of part of the rant (the part most often played--the "I will PAY THE WAY..." part). I hear a lot of students, mostly those who weren't at GU yet when this happened but a lot who were too, ask about the video. Honestly, it's kind of anticlimactic--like I always tell them (and you can watch it yourself if you go to the link and go to #11), it's just him in front of that same background from all our post-game press conferences. He doesn't gesture much, and if you had the volume off he would seem much less angry. Much better as an audio clip...but nobody ever seems to have the full version (wherein Craiggers uses and then offers to define the word "countenance").
The line at the very end though, that was pretty classly super-classy.

The funny thing about Esh's tirade is that no one ever actually talked about whether it had any merit or not. Did Sweetney really not get calls? I don't know, but I do know that Esh will pay the way for any referee to stand in the post and take the crap that Michael Sweetney has to. That was such a false threat though, everyone knows we're broke. We can't afford anyone's airline ticket.

For what it's worth, Craig's press conference didn't seem very spontaneous at all.
I'm guessing Craig saw an easy opportunity to get the word out not to let teams crowd on Sweetney. and an January press conference was the equivalent of taking an early first half T to get the refs to be kinder later in the game.
Did it work? Sweetney's fouls per Big East game went up slightly from 2.56 in 2002 to 2.81 in 2003. He fouled out of only one Big East game in 2003, down from two the year before. Offensively, his free throw average dropped from 11.4 to 9.5 FTA's a game, but his shots rose from 11.8 to 15.2. In short, the "tirade" probably didn't make a lot of difference, but it didn't hurt him, either....(Sweetney, that is.)
You want spontaneous, watch the tape when John Chaney interrupted John Calipari's press conference.

They should just kick that clown out of the league. How many kids were in the stands watching that?
