"2024 basketball rankings update: Predicting the 2024-25 Freshman of the Year for each conference... BIG EAST— LIAM MCNEELEY (CONNECTICUT COMMIT) Ranking: No. 10 overall Liam McNeeley made one of the best decisions of this recruiting cycle by committing to back-to-back national champions, the UConn Huskies. Dan Hurley will surround him with players with winning habits. It is the ideal situation for McNeeley as he will only be required to play to his strengths and contribute by complimenting others. BIG EAST CONTENDERS Using last year as an example, hardly any freshmen received significant minutes in the Big East last year. Castle was the only unanimous selection to the Big East All-Freshman Team and deservingly so. No. 31 Ahmad Nowell (Connecticut), No. 36 Jackson McAndrew (Creighton), and No. 40 Thomas Sorber (Georgetown) are the names that have legit chances at winning this award. With Hassan Diarra back and Aiden Mahoney transferring into UConn, there will be less of an opportunity for Nowell to find meaningful minutes. However, his strength, toughness and ability to generate offense could allow him to carve out a space in the Huskies' rotation. McAndrew is an ideal fit for Greg McDermott. He will give the Bluejays a floor-spacing option in the front court and he could make a name for himself with his ability to shoot the ball. Ed Cooley has been on record raving about Thomas Sorber's "It-Factor". It is safe to bet that he will earn impactful minutes in Year 1 as a Hoya." 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/longformarticle/2024-basketball-rankings-update-predicting-the-2024-25-freshman-of-the-year-for-each-conference-231571507/#2417881

"The most intriguing 2024-25 college basketball recruiting classes The transfer portal is finally slowing down, high school recruiting is mostly done and we are taking a look at nine of the most interesting 2024 recruiting classes... UCONN HUSKIES High School Class: Liam McNeeley, Ahmad Nowell and Isaiah Abraham. Transfer Class: Aidan Mahaney and Tarris Reed Jr. Bossi's Take: How could anybody call themselves a fan of college basketball and not be interested in what Dan Hurley and the back-to-back National Champion Connecticut Huskies are doing. Whether or not Alex Karaban stays in the draft is going to make a real difference. If he comes back, he'll likely be on a lot of preseason All-American lists. And given what they've done over the past few years, it's safe to assume that any returning Huskies will take a real leap. Now, let's look at the recruiting class. The headliner here is McNeeley. After originally signing with Indiana, the five-star McDonald's All-American sought a release from his Letter of Intent to ended up in Storrs. He's tough and he can really shoot it. You know who else is tough? Nowell. He looks like he was born to play in the Big East and is ready to compete physically while Abraham will play the role of the designated lob-catching athlete and switchable defender. So far, the Huskies have only added a pair of transfers but they are good. A sharpshooter with toughness, Mahaney looks ready to play major minutes and produce at the two. Also, there are at least a few in the 247Sports offices who would argue that Reed has been underutilized at this point in his college career and is ready to flourish in the paint for UConn." 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/longformarticle/the-most-intriguing-2024-25-college-basketball-recruiting-classes-231613454/#2418325

Not sure where to put this so I'll drop it here... I'm not sure if I like this, five OV's is plenty in my opinion. Now this will make recruiting an even bigger saga.

PC gets its 2nd top 40 commit for the 2025 class. Gotta give English credit. He’s doing a great job on the recruiting front. I have to imagine though his final stop won’t be PC.

"Five transfers that could be poised for breakout sophomore seasons... LAYDEN BLOCKER, Arkansas to DePaul Blocker was one of the most celebrated point guards in the 2023 class but had an up-and-down year as part of a volatile and underperforming Arkansas roster a season ago. As a freshman, he never carved out a consistent role but showed some flashes of the star he was as a senior at Sunrise Christian Academy. In fact, his per-40 numbers suggested he was possibly slightly under-utilized in Fayetteville. The point is, Blocker wasn’t overwhelmed by SEC competition and should thrive in the Big East with a year of college development to his name. Blocker is poised to become a fan favorite as one of the leaders of a long-awaited new era at DePaul, where newly hired head coach Chris Holtmann is looking to erase the embarrassment of the Tony Stubblefield era, which ended following a disastrous 3-29 campaign a season ago. The Blue Demons have nowhere to go but up, so it stands to reason that Blocker will be the catalyst of a significantly improved squad... JAMIE KAISER, Maryland to Butler A strong, big-bodied wing that was known for the ability to fill it from deep in high school, Keiser’s numbers at Maryland didn’t reflect the way he played as a prep standout, as he shot just 26.9 percent from the floor and 26.5 percent from three in 19.5 minutes per contest. Still, there’s reason to believe those numbers are, at least in part, the product of a small sample size and the fact that there never seemed to be a defined or constituent role for the freshman in Kevin Willard’s system. Kaiser projects as a possible starter at Butler next season, however, and will play a major role for the Bulldogs if he’s able to regain the shooting form he showcased during his time as a high schooler. SCOTTY MIDDLETON, Ohio State to Seton Hall A top-60 prospect in the class of 2023, Middleton is a Florida-born guard that appeared in 30 games as a freshman at Ohio State last season. But he never put things together in the way Buckeye fans had hoped. He started to find some footing late in the season, once head coach Chris Holtman was ousted, and replaced by interim head coach Jake Diebler. The late-season improvement combined with the fact that there will be plenty of playing time up for grabs at Seton Hall, which lost a significant chunk of its backcourt production to the portal, suggests Middleton could see a massive jump in production at his new home. Middleton will bring some much-needed long-range shooting to Shaheen Holloway’s roster, as the newest Pirate connected on 45.2 percent of the 62 3-pointers he attempted last season." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/five-transfers-that-could-be-poised-for-breakout-sophomore-seasons

This is smart scheduling and a good response to the Big East's not getting a lot of teams in the tournament. Of course, when a team is good like Marquette, there's a lot of incentive to schedule this way and get a bunch of OOC wins. Scheduling is the one area where I am just not sure Cooley gets it fully. He's never scheduled strongly, and I feel like we need to be in the good November tournaments that Ewing ran away from. That new NIL-based tournament would be great, we really should go to Maui again (Providence did play there under Cooley), and the other higher profile events. As of right now, I don't believe we have one of those on the schedule at all for the future.

Interesting that Pitino has been aggressive in adding good OOC games, Kentucky, Georgia etc. Not sure what Cooley thinks or will do--even if he's not that confident I'd think he'd want to generate more interest in the program with some bog OOC games. Might be that his perspective is different always being at small regional schools. For many of the BE opponents, unless the teams are very good, there is not a ton of interest.
