Somehow MCI forgot that "favorite" has nothing to do with "best". I just have a hard time understanding why so many people choose these same below average players as being amongst their favorites. Clearly, the standard you apply when deciding your favorite players eliminates those you consider "below average". While the first three players on my list (Ewing, Floyd and Reggie) would no doubt be among virtually everyone's favorites, I also reflected on guys I liked for more than their stats. Basketball being the ultimate team game, the question for me became whose contribution did I admire most. You decry Big John's apparent recruiting difficulties, but frankly, Joey Brown in many ways is the kind of player Thompson always had on his teams. The Ewings, Mournings, et al were the exceptions. The team was fleshed out by role players, of which Joey was a very good example. That he was able to maximize on his talent level is precisely why I liked him.

Not to mention that Boubacar was arguably the best non-center defensive player to ever put on the blue and gray. Whoa. Anyone care to share any Gene Smith stories? Yeah, me -- Pearl Washington.... Just funnin' (as was Pearl)!

The more stories and reasons you include, the better, in my opinion--I don't know a lot of this stuff b/c I didn't really follow college basketball, let alone the Hoyas, until after I got accepted (Columbia--I think it's weird that you applied to a school who's team you hated. I refused to apply to Duke, or even consider looking at the school, because I hated their basketball team/fans).
1) ROY! ROY ROY ROY!! Best cheer, best moment of my Hoya basketball career. And he's 7'2. Which is awesome. 2) Sweetney I only got to see him play for one year, but what I got to see was absolutely amazing. That man was a force. The 'Cuse game that year was the best game I've ever seen anyone play. 3)Iverson I had his shoes, and I have a "The Answer" wristband. I just wish I had watched him in college (every one of the games they show of him on Classic has been amazing). The more I learn about him, the more I like him. 4)Jeff I can just tell he's going to be something special. And I can't wait to watch him become special.
I'm going to leave my list at 4, mainly b/c it's hard to have a lot of favorites when you're a relatively new fan. Though I think that Josh Thornton has the potential to creep up on the list, b/c the surest way to become one of my favorites (aside from being ridiculously tall) is to be able to rain deep threes. And when you factor in that he has a CD? I mean, the potential there is off the charts.

You're both right, somewhat, on Brown.
MCI is right that Brown is overrated, as everyone seems to remember him fondly, but frankly, the teams he led were a general disappointment, especially when you consider that he played with 2 NBA All-stars in the post and another very solid pro player in O.
Avant is right in that Joey was very JTII, and he woud've fit in fine...if there had been a perimeter threat.
JTII's teams from the 80s on through this era lamost always had the big men, but the team did its best when it had a perimeter star to balance it out: Sleepy & Reggie.
Even the early Zo years had Tillmon and Bryant. When they left, who played SG and SF? Churchwell and who? Suddenly, the team went from balance in Sleepy and Reggie years to good but NBA caliber to absolutely nothing at the perimeter slot.
Would a scoring point have been better? Sure. Would Joey have been fine had Grant Hill been at the 3? Probably true as well.

Also, Brandon hasn't made many (or any lists), but he and Ashanti will always have a fond place in my heart for sticking through it all. It could've been even uglier than it was.

Whoa. Anyone care to share any Gene Smith stories? Yeah, me -- Pearl Washington.... Just funnin' (as was Pearl)! ;D LOL! That is one of the greatest performances I've ever seen in college by a player. The Pearl was the man that Big East tournament final game in 1984. He had Gene (mr. glove himself), Mike Jackson, and Fred Brown on roller skates that game. I think its this one highlight they show all the time that Perl is constantly dribbling and crossing the basketball through his legs faking Michael Jackson out of his shoes, and then he hits a bank shot off the backboard. Simply Amazing!

Even the early Zo years had Tillmon and Bryant. When they left, who played SG and SF? Churchwell and who? The SG was Charles Harrison from Carroll in D.C. He left at the beginning of his sophomore year and transferred to Wake Forest and Irvin Church and Eric Micoud started in his place.

Who needs Usher when you can have Josh ? ;D Seriously no one picked up on my "presence on the speakers" comment in yesterday's Kenner thread. Unfortunately we never got to hear more than 10 seconds of the song. Someone has to tell me the story of Eric Micoud and the French Foreign Legion. All this time I thought it was a joke, but 'm beginning to feel like it isn't. At least not literally a joke. When Iverson became available there wasn't enough schollies. That problem was solved when Eric Micoud, who was a French citizen, decided to leave the program and return to his home country. I think there was mention about him perhaps joining the military and that led to a running Tony Kornheiser joke that JT sent Micoud to the French Foreign Legion to never be seen again in order to make space for AI.

While I agree that Joey Brown wasn't the most gifted PG the Hilltop has ever seen, he definitely provided two memorable moments for me as a GU undergrad:
1. Coast to coast buzzer-beater v. UConn at Cap Centre after the Huskies inexplicably turned it over with seconds to go while holding for a last shot during my senior year. I'm pretty sure one guard passed to another who wasn't looking and it conked off his head, allowing Joey to swoop in and take it to the rim for a layup (combination of Chris Smith, Brian Fair and Kevin Ollie - not sure which).
2. Party at my house senior year on Resevoir Road. Joey walks up to one of my roommates (a female '91 grad), looks at her, looks at his open hand (which contained a condom), and looks back at her. Didn't say a word. It was hysterical.

Hoya history moment. 1979 post season before the Big East was formed. Hoyas vs Syracuse for an NCAA birth at a game played (I think) at Cole. Both we and Syracuse our ranked. Hoya big men in foul trouble. 24or 25 year old freshman Ed Spriggs comes off the bench for several key baskets and 2 immense blocks on Louis Orr. TV announcer Maev Albert screams "Mark that one return to sender Bucky (Walters)". Hoyas win
