Am I imagining things or has Newsweek veered very right leaning recently? I know it doesn’t have the same cache it used to, but it still seems weird. The op/eds are around 80/20 right leaning (some are WSJ op/ed level of detachment from reality) and even the “news” articles seem overwhelmingly biased in the past few months. I haven't paid attention to Newsweek since the Washington Post sold it back in 2010. From Wikipedia: In November 2022, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Newsweek had "taken a marked radical right turn by buoying extremists and promoting authoritarian leaders" since it hired political activist Josh Hammer as editor at large. It noted the magazine's elevation of conspiracy theorists, publication of conspiracy theories about COVID-19, views such as support for a ban on all legal immigration to the United States and denying adults access to trans-affirming medical care, and failure to disclose potential conflicts of interest in the content published on Hammer's opinion section and podcast.[99] Ah, well that explains it. Thank you. I’ve read several of Hammer’s op/eds and always wondered “why do they keep giving this guy a forum?” because his ability to write and reason is at a 7th grade level (if that). Now I know he’s giving himself the forum. If you guys can stomach it, you should read some of his stuff. Truly Facebook level idiocy. Edit: I just looked him up: apparently he went to Duke and got his JD from the University of Chicago. So he’s not a dummy, but he seems to know his audience is full of them (hence the level of writing and painfully brain dead arguments). Just another right wing grifter appealing to the MAGA crowd.

Well of course the Fake News Network won't air this ad, because their view, supported by the cultists, was that January 6 was nothing more than a bunch of tourists just celebrating their time in DC.

Between this and the LA Times, Trump has been effective in cowing the media. If Trump wins, which is seemingly increasingly likely (to the astonishment and dismay of decent people), very dark days lie ahead.

My online subscription was coming up for renewal. Seeing that they don’t bother to cover Georgetown hoops this made it clear that the $120 would easily be better spent elsewhere.
Democracy Dies in Darkness. Indeed.

While you can't conclude anything from this it is possible that GOP is cannabilizing their own votes by now voting early as they didn't in 2020. Accordingly, their election day vote totals may be less. I also heard a stat that 2:1 new voters in PA are voting D, perhaps indicative of good GOTV operation by the Dems. Yesterday, I placed my 200 postcards to PA Dems encouraging and reminding them to vote Nov. 5th. election.lab.ufl.edu/early-vote/2024-early-voting/2024-general-election-early-vote-pennsylvania/

I will be spreading the word over, over, and over about the danger Trump presents to this country to anyone who will listen. I am becoming increasingly discouraged by the way no news seems to ding Trump, but even the slightest misstep by Harris is magnified. Reliable sources have indicated that Trump has shown admiration for Hitler, and it barely makes a wave. In a normal society, that would be completely disqualifying. As would the rapes, the insurrection, the fascism, the relentless lying, the felonies, and on and on. But nothing. It defies all reason.

I am very concerned that Trump is going to win this thing.
Another thing that really drives me nuts is the double-standard in so many areas. Just saw a headline "Johnson, McConnell call on Harris to tone down rhetoric" - seriously? Trump and his MAGA cohorts have built their campaigns on name-calling, trolling, and denigrating their opponents and pretty much anyone else they disagree with.

Something is wrong with this split-screen picture. On one side, former president Donald Trump rants about mass deportations and claims to have stopped “wars with France,” after being described by his longest-serving White House chief of staff as a literal fascist. On the other side, commentators debate whether Vice President Kamala Harris performed well enough at a CNN town hall to “close the deal.” Seriously? Much of a double standard here? Somehow, it is apparently baked into this campaign that Trump is allowed to talk and act like a complete lunatic while Harris has to be perfect in every way. I don’t know the answer to the chicken-or-egg question — whether media coverage is leading public perception or vice versa — but the disparate treatment is glaring. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/10/24/harris-trump-cnn-town-hall/

But, again, it would likely only be damaging to anyone other than the Republican cult leader. What I don’t get is how independent voters are going along with a this too. Are they that poorly informed? Were they that stung by (misunderstanding the fundamentals of and causes of) inflation? I have lost all faith in this country’s ability to make rational choices based on widely available information.
