Pete Strickland (DeMatha ' 75, played college ball at Pitt IIRC) named as interim head coach at DeMatha as noted in other thread. Interestingly, Strickland regularly plays ball with Esherick. Don't know if that could affect Ward's decision, if at all. And whether that's a + or a -. Now that's a pick up game I'm interested in checking out. My brother plays in that Saturday morning game in Arlington. I've been invited but don't live fulltime in DMV anymore. Some former Hoyas of Esh's era sometimes play (Ramell Ross, Kevin Braswell, Courtland Freeman to name a few). Lots of retired military guys as well. The game is organized by former Dep. Sec. of State Rich Armitage who had season tix with former CIA Director George Tenet (F '76) back in tbe day.

Esherick was a professor of mine at GMU (graduated 2016). Very nice guy. Never mentioned his time at Georgetown. Always wanted to ask about it but didn’t want to bring up a sore subject lol. I was a year ahead of Craig at Springbrook HS and Georgetown. Others may disagree but Craig is a nice guy and he rarely talks about Georgetown these days. Does he feel he got a raw deal?

I won't go that far. Disappointed at the manner of firing for sure as he and his wife (former Commonwealth's Attorney for Arlington County who lost a Democratic primary to a "progressive" prosecutor) were good friends with DiGioia and his wife. He has moved on and is happy. The Esh bashing that shows up here too frequently is unfortunate IMHO. But back on topic, I don't think Craig would affirmatively badmouth Georgetown to Strickland in a manner that would affect Ward's decision or whether Strickland's hire would impact Ward's decision process one way or the other.

Tyrell Ward TOP 8...
GEORGETOWN. Xavier, Georgia, LSU, Virginia Tech, Miami (FL), Indiana, Maryland
Stiff competition. I wonder if it feels like he's a heavy Virginia Tech lead (which is the speculation), if we focus our efforts more towards Cam Whitmore and/or Jaylen Martin. I feel it's almost a must to land 1 of these 3 guys, although with the transfer situations all over, I don't know it's an ABSOLUTE must. Of course, if Aminu returns for a second season and Jordan Riley blossoms, that changes everything.

It'd be huge for local recruiting aspects if we can thwart Miami, Xavier, Lsu, Maryland and VA Tech for Ward. Ward could signal a new era of talented players staying home. The staff has made the effort so let's see. Hoyas!

Zero blue bloods and not even some of Georgetown’s more successful recent competitors such as Villanova and Virginia.

Tangentially related to Ward but some turmoil over the appointment of Strickland as interim head coach. Don't know that it has any effect upon Ward's recruitment. Jones announced May 17 that he was leaving after 19 years to become associate head coach at Virginia Tech. Two days later, DeMatha hired Strickland, an alumnus with connections to the basketball team stretching five decades, for at least the next season. The move upset not just Smith but many of the program’s parents, other alumni and other stakeholders, according to interviews with a dozen people in and around the storied basketball team. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/06/10/dematha-basketball-mike-jones-peter-strickland/?itid=sf_sports

Man I hope this door isn't closed being his skill level and how high he was on GTown prior to the Coach Jones situation. This is the kid that I want most in the'22 class. He checks all the boxes. Highly skilled, local kid, and position of need.... check, check, and check.

Tyrell Ward, SF, DeMatha Catholic, DC New World New Rank: 52 Old Rank: 107 Recruitment: Ward is being pursued by programs including Indiana, Georgetown, Xavier, Maryland, Seton Hall, LSU, Virginia Tech and he received offers from Louisville and Virginia this past weekend. He has taken an official visit to LSU. It is very notable that his former high school coach, Mike Jones, recently accepted an assistant coach position at Virginia Tech, has are now the perceived leader due to their relationship. Why he rose: Ward rose in the rankings due to his blend of length, athleticism and versatility. The 6-foot-7, 185-pound small forward impacts the game in a variety of ways on both ends of the court. Offensively, he is a capable shooter from three, can slash and is a capable playmaker and has shown that he can do that out of ball-screens. He plays with a motor, he defends multiple positions, gets out in transition and is explosive in space. 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/LongFormArticle/Top-ten-risers-2022-top150-rankings--167165033/#167165033_5

We aren’t included in his final list, per Jake Weingarten. Very odd turn of events here, looks like it’s going to be Xavier (two crystal balls in the last hour).

I have absolutely no idea...except that we (Patrick) have been on him for a very long time, and he was quoted awhile back as saying that he always wanted to go to Georgetown, his dream school...alot of time has passed and others have entered the picture and seemingly have become viable alternatives...so...will it be the loyalty and long lasting relationship built over time with a chance to stay home and play for a HOF player/coach, or the allure of the shiny new object presented by "the new girl in town"...all my toes and fingers are crossed...

He already eliminated us, we’re not on his final list.

I have not seen any "final list", but if its true that we were not on it, then something had to have happened that dramatically changed his situation...we were long believed to be his leader (after all, we offered him on 9/20 and according to 247 sports, Xavier offered him TODAY)...if he goes to Xavier over staying at home and playing for a HOF coach at a school he's always dreamed of attending, this to me would be a catastrophic recruiting failure...I know, folks will say we will get somebody else blah blah, but I doubt we'll get anyone better...I will continue to wait patiently, but recruiting is the lifeblood of a program's success or failure, and you can't lose people who are priorities in your own back yard to your conference opponents out of the area...still a good ways to go for '22 but we need to start closing the guys we want and getting results...

Every year we seem to be mentioned at some point with 25-35 recruits. We ultimately land 0-1 of those players and end up adding a few kids seemingly out of nowhere. This leads to repeated disappointment over players choosing other schools. It’s mostly just pure statistics.
