Terrible loss of a wonderful classmate to ALS, an unforgiving opponent. Today is a very sad day. bit.ly/3vg9RFF

Father Pilarz was an incredible teacher, priest, and leader. I was fortunate enough to have him in one of my early English classes, and his warmth, intelligence, and brilliance improved my writing and analysis by leaps and bounds. I quickly sought out more classes (despite zero interest in John Donne!). I also became a mainstay at the 5 PM Sunday services, then led by the classic small-t trinity of Fathers Walsh, Hentz, and Pilarz, through and well after graduation. Father Pilarz's homilies were like free classes, but they also resonated in my heart and my soul. How we loved his booming voice! I was also fortunate enough to work for Father Pilarz (and many others) as an admin assistant in the English department for a year and over a summer. And of course, when we wanted to bring back the tradition of a live Jack the Bulldog, Father Pilarz was there for us. But my favorite moment may have been a small dinner with students my junior year, when Father Pilarz relayed the story of how he was called to his vocation and what it meant for him. It was in all of these moments, and so many more, that I came to understood the beauty and relevance of religious life in an increasingly secular society.
We are incredibly blessed that God chose to call this man and even more so that Father Pilarz answered the call. He touched so many lives and Georgetown, Marquette, and Scranton are all better for his ministry, which ended far too soon. I hope that he is sitting up in heaven tonight with "Jack" (Daisy) at his side, cheering on the Hoyas and knowing that he blessed us all.

I am so sorry, Dan and those that knew Father Pilarz. No one should die of ALS; it is a nasty disease. He was quite a man with numerous achievements, not least of them being the caretaker for Jack for a while. May he rest in peace.
