Work(wo)manlike 3-0 victory over hapless Seton Hall and their equally hapless streaming coverage and camera angles. Props to student play-by-play announcer Rony Jerez, though - maybe the next John Fanta in the making?
kind of a weird ending to the first half, Hoyas got awarded a free kick with all of two seconds left and appeared to score on a header right as time expired, but the official ruled that the scoreboard started late and waved it off. Womp. Anyway, as Dave alluded to in the game recap, a lot of players saw the field in the second half, providing some important downtime for the regulars and experience for the bench.
Back half of this weird season begins in Providence on Thursday.

Lauren Gallagher with a couple of clutch plays to preserve the clean sheet. Provy definitely generated some nervy moments for the Hoyas, who had their share of opportunities, but generally seemed a bit less dangerous than the home side.
In any case, with 3 games left in the regular season, the Hoyas are in the drivers seat at 6-0-1 in the conference. UConn is in second at 4-2-1 and Provy sits right behind them at 3-2-1. St. Johns will almost certain beat Seton Hall this evening to move to 3-2-1 as well (Providence and St. John's had to cancel one of their games, so they'll end up with one fewer game than the rest of the East Division).
(EDIT: Lol NOPE - that's why they play the games. The Hall gets their first BE win of the year, knocking off St. John's 3-2 in 2OT)
Both UConn and St. John's are undefeated at home, so those final matches to cap off the season will be tough. So long as they take care of business at home against Nova on Saturday, though, there's margin for error that should hopefully let them play relaxed and confident in those last two contests.
Providence-centered highlights here, including a critical moment in the match, a shot off of a cross from just outside the six that deflected off a Georgetown defender and forced Alyssa Navarette into a pure reflex save in the first half:

The ladies get their moment on national TV on Senior Day, hosting Nova. Already up 1-0 10 minutes in.

Flipped over at the half after watching the US play Northern Ireland, and the women are up 5-0. Gia Vicari with a hat trick, Grace Nguyen with a fitting tally on Senior Day, and Daisy Cleverly with the other.

Hoyas drop a touchdown on Villanova while keeping the sheet clean defensively. Good time for the most comprehensive performance of the year - everyone involved will enjoy having that higher-quality broadcast on film as a digital trophy of sorts. A couple of scattered thoughts: - The 7 is the eye-popping number, of course, but to me the defensive performance was even more impressive. Just a complete and total nullification - Villanova had nothing remotely resembling an attack.
- Vicari has a real nose for the ball. She has the air of a future pro about her.
- Nice to see Maya Fernandez-Powell open her account with the first two scores of her career. The second goal in particular, redirecting a Boo Jackson cross, was a real deft touch.
- Speaking of Boo... nice to see her back out there and showing flashes of the form she displayed earlier in her career. Would be great to add her back into the mix - multiplicity of offensive threats is vital when facing teams with equal or superior talent (of which Villanova quite obviously is not one).
- You would think making two College Cups would damped some of the anti-Big East bias among the coaches poll, and yet here we are with the Hoyas ranked 12 to start the week despite being 8-0-0 and having allowed one goal all year. Duke is sitting at #5, Vanderbilt at #6, and Clemson at #8 despite each having FOUR losses. Santa Clara is one spot above the Hoyas while only having played 3 games. You've got Butler now at 8-1-0 after today and on the outside of the top 25. It's ridiculous.

Hoyas last two games of the regular season have been wiped out due to Covid. Not great. Hope this does not jeopardize Big East Tournament participation.

Gonna be a little wonky to have the Hoyas to be playing for the first time in three weeks in the Big East semis... reminds me a little of some FBS football teams that have weeks between the regular season and their bowl. Regardless, with Creighton at 4-5 on the year (and having to travel quite a way's to a field they haven't played on since 2019...and there ain't no direct flights from Omaha to Providence or even Boston...), this should be a solid win in which everyone gets their game sealegs back under them and gets tuned up for the one with hardware on the line.

#AwardSZN - Ladies' Edition: www.bigeast.com/news/2021/4/15/big-east-announces-annual-womens-soccer-awards.aspxSecond Team includes: Lauren Gallagher, Georgetown, Grad., GK Julia Leas, Georgetown, So., D Jenna Royson, Georgetown, Jr., D Erin Martin was the lone Hoya on the All-Freshman team. As usual, some interesting choices all over the place here. The Good:Kudos to opposing coaches for recognizing Daisy Cleverley, who does not have a ton of stats on the year, but is very often the best player on the field. She looks like a pro out there - cool, collected, canny... complete. Nice to see her rewarded. Menta is certainly not undeserving of Offensive Player of the Year honors, but you could easily make an argument for Gia Vicari here. I suspect there was an element of "lifetime achievement award" in the ultimate selection. No complaints here. Kelly Ann, meanwhile, is fully deserving of top defender honors both for her performance this season and for her overall career body of work. It's a proud tradition of backline standouts that Dave Nolan has built over the years, and Kelly Ann is right up there with the aforementioned Meaghan Nally and Liz Wenger, not to mention earlier stalwarts like Marina Paul (who recently wrote a book! Y'all should check it out!), Sarah Adams, and - of course - Emily Menges. The Bad:What is going on with the goalkeeper awards here. Palacios from UConn and Rodriguez from Butler share Co-Goalkeepers of the Year honors. OK, fine. Due to a tie in voting, there's more than 11 players on the First Team. Alright, makes sense. Buuuut they're not both on the First Team - only Palacios, while Rodriguez is relegated to Second. How is that possible??? And what, 12 First Teamers instead of 11 is OK, but 13 is impossible? Speaking of goalkeepers... ok, I totally get wanting to reserve the top awards for #1 keepers who saw most of their team's minutes (although that didn't prevent Giannis from being Co-Goalkeeper of the Year last year with the St. John's guy, despite splitting time with Tomas Romero). So it's great to have Lauren Gallagher recognized at all. But then, if she's there... where is Alyssa Navarrete??? Giannis and Romero alternated *games* so you could maybe envision an argument that Giannis faced better teams. Alyssa and Lauren alternate *halves* and face the same competition! They've only allowed one goal between them all year (which was with Lauren in net). What is the logic here? I *know* that these voting coaches were not carefully scrutinizing the finer points of their respective games and finding some meaningful difference. Yeesh. The Ugly:All-BIG EAST First Team: 12 players - one goalie, TWO defenders, five midfielders, four forwards. Give me a break. Defense wins championships? Not according to this voting!

A very game effort from Creighton - they played hard and had a couple of players who looked pretty quick... or at least a step quicker than we were.
Fortunately, our defense was compact, well-organized, and well-disciplined (no fouls in the box!). The one goal Creighton did score was pretty flukey, a cross that one of our defenders headed high into the air, and then Alyssa's attempt to punch it out got deflected and fell right to the feet of a Creighton player. While Creighton generated plenty of possession, offense, and shots after that, it was by no means the kind of "OMG batten down the hatches" wave of attacks that we saw the last time the Hoyas played on this field in Providence.
You do have to feel for the Creighton keeper there - it's so incredibly difficult in those kinds of situations to make yourself big and try to smother the ball without undercutting the attacker for an obvious foul. Which is exactly what happened. Great individual run by Jenna Menta to jam the ball down the defense's throat and force the foul right inside the 6.
Hopefully they've got their game legs back under them after this one following the three-week layoff and are ready to take back the crown on Sunday!

1-0 early. Settled in after a tough first few minutes. Nearly had a second off a corner but keeper with a great save.
