Solid win for the women today. Was able to watch on ESPN+
the 2-0 score line doesn't show how dominant they were. Possession was like 80-20 Hoyas.
18 Corners.
Goals by Grace Nguyen and Sofie Fox

Always love a clean sheet. Great start to the season! Clean sheet not as necessarily important as finding out what you have in the cupboard in a preseason game where you are two up. Clear the bench.

Another clean sheet. Much deeper into the bench today. Player morale improvement. 4-0. Not just the score, but looked a lot more aggressive on the goal. Vicari looking like a question mark up front being answered. Menta is great with assists. Midfield and defenders there is little question. Looking good heading into league play.

I got to watch most of the second half. Definitely a pretty good work rate in some slow, sloppy conditions with the steady downpour onto a February Bermuda grass pitch. It looked like the team was trying to stay on the front foot, pressing high and trying to press the advantage with numbers pretty aggressively on GW's side of the field. I made a similar observation a few years ago when the women's team was firing on all cylinders: when you have a lot of faith in your defense and/or your superior speed and ability to get back, you can take some chances like that, trusting that you'll be able to recover and smother any counterattacks that do result. That's what I saw today - on occasion, GW was able to get a counter started, but they could never exploit it. Just too much speed and organization from the Hoyas backline and middle. That is highly encouraging. On offense, Gia Vicari easily passes the eye test as a creator and scorer. Excited to see what she can do in the Big East season. Three additional thoughts: 1) Great to have Grace Nguyen back. Her absence was sorely missed last season. Given the conditions, today was less about precision passing over the course of a possession than about quick one-two interchanges and one-on-one matchups, but having her as the 'unlocker' in the middle will be crucial for the attach to be multi-threat. 2) Julia Leas was *everywhere* - her activity and omnipresence was...dare I say it... Chloe Knott like. 3) Nice to see Lauren Gallagher taking advantage of her final year of eligibility as a graduate student after losing her senior season to injury. She and Alyssa Navarette had to spend pretty much their entire Georgetown careers up til now on the bench as Arielle Schechtman had a stranglehold on the position in between the posts (Gallagher's memorable PK save in the College Cup game against UNC notwithstanding). Hopefully they have the opportunity to go out on top and leave their own imprint on the position and the program in their final campaign. I take this to mean that Anna Leat is trapped in New Zealand due to Covid? Presumably her fellow Kiwi Daisy Cleverly remained in the States, and that's why she is taking part in this season as a graduate transfer, while Leat is not on the roster (but remains in the student directory)? EDIT: Woops, should've read the Game Notes more closely on that last one:

Time for the women to take down Seton Hall at Shaw Field! Dave needs no help, but it looks like SH is a large dose of #18 senior Harrigan. Middies and defenders need to keep a close eye on where she is on the field..

2-0 already! Dominating possession. Devon Lis with a goal and then Jenna Menta forced an own goal.

3-0. Sofie Fox gets on the scoresheet. Seton Hall doesn't even how a shot, let alone a shot on goal.

Providence will be a very good test. With the quality of our back seven or eight the forwards have to get more aggressive to take advantage of the ability of the ball rarely getting anywhere near our goal. Normally one worries of counters but we are solid in the back.
Providenc 8 goals to 1. No walkover at all.

TV on the BB game and iPad in my lap on soccer. Because of the ups and downs of the second half of the BB game I was not watching the soccer match as closely as I usually do. It seemed like we did not play as well as we have in the past few games, but still came away with the clean sheet and the win.
I had the impression that Nova was bunkering on defense, and rarely had a chance to score during the match. Still, a win is a win. Well done.

Hoyas hand St. John's their second loss of the year with a 'controlled' 1-0 performance Sunday afternoon.
St. John's was not bunkering quite as much as some other teams, perhaps, but they definitely had at least 10 behind the ball at all times and were probably looking for Zsani Kaján to pull a rabbit out of her hat to steal points. However, Zsani looked less dangerous today than in any previous encounter with the Hoyas that I can recall. Sayeth Diamond Dave:
Hard agree. The Hungarian Hammer has often looked like a woman among girls out there on the pitch, I'm glad this is her final season!
The first half was Georgetown dominating possession but not quite being able to get a final good look at goal... until Sophie Fox collected a nice pass from Gia Vicari and stormed the like a guard attacking the hoop and sent in a low skipper that the GK would surely like back. She was caught wrong-footed, wrong-legged, and wrong-bodied. But that's why you try to put as many on frame as you can! They all count the same on the stat sheet.
Game opened up after that, but continued to be dominated by the Hoyas in possession. They were unlucky not to get a second after Jenna Royson - who was flying around all over the field, involved in practically every play - drew a foul in the 18, but the St. John's keeper got a measure of redemption for her earlier flub by making a great stop on the PK.
A much tighter rotation this time around - perhaps we would've seen more players if they had gotten the 2nd. As it stands, Alyssa Navarette took the full 90 in goal and only 3 non-starters saw the pitch, including the goalscorer Fox and the offensive sparkplug Vicari.
All in all, this is kind of a hard squad to pin down thus far. There's a LOT of talent on the offensive side of the ball, even if goalscoring has been more limited than it could've been. The main distinguishing feature has been the dominance of possession. This team looks built to win every game 1-0... but with the firepower to easily knock in several more scores.
Coach Nolan has been pretty complimentary in his post-game remarks after each contest, and no one knows better than him, so I'll give him the last word:

Just like the men yesterday, the women had to squeak it out in OT! 2-1 over UConn. 7-0-0 on the season!
