Interestingly, our game with Navy will be their fourth game.

I missed the UMBC game, but I hope maybe I can see some of this one. I’ll admit, it has been hard to think of basketball this year with so much else going on in the world. Right now, I am so surprised that they are playing games, I don’t really have many expectations for the team. Plus, it has been such an unusual year in terms of practicing, scheduling, and the like, that it is difficult to judge any team’s performance through the lens of this year. I just hope the team plays hard and gets off to a 2-0 start.

Navy beat GW 78-71 at Alumni Hall, play at Terps on Friday and host MSM's before our game. As a Navy veteran and Hoya, I can't lose!😁

They're playing against Maryland now.... Hoyas better step up their play if they expect to win against this Navy team.

I’m watching Navy vs Maryland now. We will need strong guard play. Wahab will score against their big man. Go Hoyas!

I would really love to see us run more down screens, and low post screens (cross screen). Instead of the stagnant throw it into the post-up man. We are not going to have the big man advantage very long. We need to become more creative when trying to feed the post. Down screens would help guys like Pickett catch and shoot. I believe he's thinking too much, when he receives the ball out on the floor. Let him be aggressive, with catch and shooting the midrange shot. Where he could use the pump-fake and get to the free-throw line. Call sets to build his confidence. Just my 2 scents!!!

The academic majors of Navy's team are impressive. They have a player names Trae Broadnax--is he the son of the great Gtwn player Horace Broadnax?

And his brother signed to play football at Duke. Sports run in the Broadnax family. His father, Horace Broadnax, who played on Georgetown’s 1984 national championship basketball team, has coached the men’s basketball team at Savannah State since 2005. Trent’s older brother, Trae, plays basketball at the U.S. Naval Academy. www.onlineathens.com/sports/20200417/benedictines-trent-broadnax-commits-to-play-football-at-duke

I believe the powers-that-be recognized the utility of liberal arts majors and that 35% of majors can be non-technical, i.e., history, poli science, languages etc. While the majority of midshipmen will choose their majors freely, the needs of the Naval Service take precedence. For the Naval Academy Class of 2013 and beyond, at least 65% of those graduates commissioned into the U.S. Navy must complete academic majors in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics disciplines. This institutional requirement applies as well to NROTC programs at other colleges. At the end of plebe year, midshipmen choose a major course of study with counsel from academic and military advisors. www.usna.edu/Academics/Majors-and-Courses/index.php

Navy hangs on to beat MSM 73-67. They are 2-1 with a win over GW and a 30 point loss to MD in which Terps just too big for them. Hoyas should be able to dominate on the inside as well I would think. Navy only 4/15 from 3. Navy was favored by 2 FWIW and played on neutral court at Xfinity.

Hoyas should be able to dominate on the inside as well I would think. I frankly can't remember the last time we "dominated" anybody. I hope I'm wrong, but I predict a close game.

Some things I'll be looking out for: 1. Defense: Shot distribution As well all know, last year teams torched us from 3. I commented in the UMBC discussion we forced them to shoot more midrange 2s, well here's the numbers behind it: (numbers per hoop-math.com) hoop-math.com/Georgetown2021.php2019-2020 % at rim: 34.8% % midrange: 23.3% % 3pt: 41.9% (303rd in country) UMBC Game: % at rim: 27.7% % midrange: 35.4% % 3pt: 36.9% The biggest schematic change was not asking our center to hard hedge pick and rolls. I harped on this big time last year, it's good to see the coaching staff adjust, hopefully we can maintain this distribution but will obviously get tougher as the competition improves. 2. Offense: Attacking a zone Per the Hoyas247 preview, Navy plays a decent amount of 2-3 zone. Which got me thinking....who would we want to actually see in the middle of the zone? On this team, my thought might actually be Jalen Harris? He just doesn't have a ton of value on the perimeter against a zone, and I'm not sure we have enough shooting to put Blair, Pickett, or Carey in there. In theory Pickett is the prototypical type player we've put there but his value is a spot up shooter. Or maybe we see more Dante Harris in this one and then Carey / Blair slots into middle. Chudier Bile in theory would be interesting, not sure if he's available at this point. 3. Sibley and Bile It's really a huge open question in our rotation. We have no idea how serious the Bile injury is. We have no idea what happened with Sibley other than Ewing saying it was his decision. In re-watching the game, I noticed Sibley had his warmup off during the first half, as if he thought he was going in. So it definitely didn't look like something that was communicated to him before the game as "punishment" or anything like that. So we'll see if it lights a fire under him. Otherwise I'm not sure we'll have enough offense to survive bench units. Ewing generally plays the starters together for the first 6-7 min of a half, which on the surface is fine, but that ultimately leads to a very bench heavy unit at some point. The D. Harris, Blair, Clark, Holloway, Igohefe lineup never had a chance. Ewing might have to alter and break up his starters earlier in half to keep it more balanced so two of them are out there at all times.

Where is the Men’s Basketball team practicing this year? This is the first time since 1981 (?) that our team could have all of its practices where it plays its games.

Last year early pre-conference I felt like we dominated boards. That was mainly because we had such a size advantage vs. good rebounding. That seemed to be the case against UMBC and my guess is that will hold true against the other smaller opponents. That also didn't set us up well for more physical teams. I'll be interested to see if the same holds true this year. Our efficiency out of Blair & Pickett was horrible against UMBC. That is going to have to improve. Blair took a number of 25+ footers and that isn't going to win us a lot of games.
