I confess, I didn't see this coming why not? Surprised they would organize publicly or surprised they want to have something resembling a college experience or surprised they want to compete and further their - in most cases - life long pursuit of excellence on the playing field? I can't imagine feeling any other way if i were in their shoes. They are being robbed of so much that can not be repeated or replicated and it doesn't have to be that way.

Maybe someone out there understands the rationale and can explain it. If Georgetown has cleared Lacrosse and Soccer to practice and play--and they're not violating DC guidelines--how is Baseball not cleared? I'm not understanding it.

Just a WAG here with no actual information but perhaps the Athletic Department is phasing in the different sports by priority with lax and soccer at the top of the list because of limited resources for implementing covid-19 protocols to ensure the safety of those associated with the various programs. Between lax, soccer, and baseball, baseball is going to come last.

Two main reasons. One is that any kind of public advocacy/mobilization on the part of Georgetown student-athletes has been very rare aside from the topics of racial equality and, to a lesser extent, sexual misconduct and the #MeToo movement. There's probably a whole host of reasons for that, but the general conservatism of McDonough when it comes to message control probably plays some role. The other is the potential for pushback, especially from fellow students, about potentially prioritizing a game (we're talking non-revenue sports here, and almost no one is going to be going pro and making a living off of their sport) over the well-being of those who have to work to make those games happen, including staff that have already been vocal about being put in what they perceive to be harm's way (see, e.g., georgetownvoice.com/2021/01/27/staff-members-claim-redeploy-georgetown-program-forces-them-to-become-health-screeners-against-their-will/). That is especially true of the sports that skew disproportionately white and affluent. I am not saying I agree with that viewpoint. For example, while baseball is not as uniformly outdoors of a sport in DC as it is in the south or California, there are absolutely ways to mitigate risk. Just from an equity standpoint, it makes me a bit queasy to see basketball moving ahead full steam while some other sports might end up on the outside looking in. But this is a fraught 'small p' political landscape when it comes to educational institutions in general and athletics in particular. It's a good example of the very real tradeoffs and difficult decisions that institutions are being confronted with.

If you can justify playing basketball, a full contact indoor sport, how can you not play baseball? It just comes down to money and priorities, not logic or the health risk to the students. I guess one can argue that a baseball team is larger than a basketball team. 🙃

But I would defer to DFW HOYA on that since he's much more knowledgeable on that topic than probably anyone here.

Volleyball didn't come back and the Hoyas are the only Big East program not participating in the season.
