Don Carey, 6’5” guard with 2 years to play from Upper Marlboro MD, commits to Georgetown. Played one season at Mount St Mary’s and one season at Siena. Per his announcement video, it appears he had Auburn, Creighton, USC, Arkansas, and Santa Clara interest. http://instagram.com/p/CC6PoLTBfTb

Have seen him play a number of times. He can definitely contribute, and when he is hot he can fill it up

This falls under the understanding as a local recruit right?
Anyways, this is a welcomed addition to the Hoya fold.

In following the MAAC, have seen him play a few times. I think this is a solid add, especially at this point of the cycle.
I also really like what this does for roster balance as opposed to another freshman.

Not sure landing a grad transfer who is from the DMV is the same thing as getting a local HS recruit. Landing a local HS recruit helps to build inroads/relationships at the player's HS and/or AAU team, as well as build the perception that we are a legitimate factor for future DMV recruits at the HS level. Those are things that need to happen for us to say we've improved our local recruiting. Landing a grad transfer who's been away from the DMV for a year (or in Carey's case, two years) but is simply actively looking for a way to come home while finishing out his career doesn't really accomplish any of the above. Maybe bringing in a Terrell Allen played a small role in convincing someone like Carey to give Georgetown a shot, but neither moves the needle for where we want to be in terms of strengthening our local recruiting. Landing impact HS players is only way to effectively do that.

Landing impact HS players is only way to effectively do that. I strongly disagree. When a player from a local program goes to Georgetown and does well, it plays well with HS coaches and AAU coaches. Further, these players maintain relationships with others from their hometowns, including players a year or two younger than they are. Additionally, we see that someone who is away comes home to play (i.e., the grass isn't always greener away from home). All of these things play into local perceptions ("Georgetown? Yeah, my buddy, Don, went there a couple of years ago and loved it" or "I know a guy, Don, who is over there right now, and he says it's awesome - you should check it out").

The local perceptions is very important.

Landing impact HS players is only way to effectively do that. You have to start somewhere. It is still someone who fits a need, who is from the DMV area, and who likely still has strong ties to the area -- 2 years is not that far removed.
