Canada has become the first country to warn that it won’t send its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics unless they are postponed for a year, as pressure builds to delay the Games due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If we’re going to have a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics, wouldn’t it also make sense to decline coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies as these are basically “advertisements” for China? I realize that the NBC or whoever is covering probably doesn’t have the Cojones to do this but this would make the point of the boycott that much stronger.

Thus far, only WTA has put its money where its mouth is by cancelling WTA events in the PRC over the Peng Shuai incident. ATP is not following suit. I can't imagine NBC sacrificing money over principle. For example, some of the corporations who indicated that they"d cease contributing to aurhoritarian, anti-democratic MAGA GOPers who voted against certifying Biden's victory are quietly reactivating those contributions.

A diplomatic boycott will be an empty half-measure.
No one cares if our elected officials/diplomats/lackeys attend. Either pull the whole team or shut up. I advocate for the former but doubt that anyone in or out of government has the stones for that move.

Most probably won't bring diplomats anyway due to covoroavirus/Delta/Omicron Empty measure.

Resident Embassy diplomatic staff of many nations still likely to attend if their nations choose to participate and most will. Chicoms win the PR battle and propaganda war.
