Cornell closing down campus. 469 active student cases as of Tuesday afternoon, a significant number tested positive for the Omicron variant. 3.01 positivity rate last week. All finals moving online; libraries closed; all athletics cancelled. If you've finished classes and finals, you can go home as long as you had a negative test within the past 48 hours. Not a good situation.

Omicron looking like it either has a very high R0, a very high vaccine escape rate, or somewhere in between on both. At the moment, I am thinking it's a lot of vaccine breakthroughs, but with relatively low morbidity.

Some students are worried that online classes may return in some form like on campus living but online or full online, thoughts?

Some students are worried that online classes may return in some form like on campus living but online or full online, thoughts? Need more time/data on virulence, but the way it's looking right now, Omicron is spreading very rapidly, but mostly among already vaccinated and younger populations, e.g., college students and young adults in urban areas who have been doing a lot of socializing. As Ed Yong framed it earlier today, on an individual level, that's not so bad for those cohorts, especially if they already got a booster. Their personal outcomes were always more likely than not to be OK in the aggregate, and that is especially true after multiple doses of vaccine. But if they begin spreading it to more vulnerable (whether due to lack of vaccination or comorbidities) populations... like when they head home for the holidays... it could drive a real ugly surge in negative outcomes. Stanford moving winter term online as a precaution.

Various other elite schools starting to follow suit and move things remote. Georgetown will be under a lot of pressure in both directions.
The Harvards and Stanfords of the world have more leeway in part because the overwhelming strength of their brand is so central to their value proposition that there are many, many students who would willingly never set foot on campus if it meant getting the diploma with that name on it. Georgetown's brand name is strong... but it's value proposition is much more dependent on being *at* Georgetown, in DC.
On the flip side, state school, especially in red states, will face strong pressure in the other direction.
Key questions for me right now are: how long will this state of affairs last? And what, if anything, will precipitate a change in this dynamic?

Harvard's spring semester really doesn't start until Jan. 24--they're moving the intersession to virtual. Georgetown doesn't have that luxury, as the semester starts Jan. 12 so they can conclude by May 2. Yes, they could move everything out 30 days, but then queue the multitude of entitled parents complaining that GU cost little Jacob or Emily a prestigious summer internship while they were still sitting in school in early June. registrar.fas.harvard.edu/harvard-college-academic-calendar

Smart move, keep the parents’ money with the offer of having real classes eventually…probably

Snark aside, Georgetown has done an extraordinarily good job at managing safety during this pandemic. This:
Likely played a role in the decision to start virtual.

It is as good an example as there ever has been of a No-Win Situation. Lotta people gonna be Big Mad (with non-zero justification) no matter what you do. Such is the nature of crises.

Ask Rochelle Walensky how it's going. Her admitting that the change from 10 days to 5 was based on part on their assessment of what they thought people would be willing to accept is a step in the right direction insofar as it lays out for all to see the kinds of calculations that go into public health decisions. Unfortunately, with many of those decisions essentially being handed off to lower-level governments and the private sector (for reasons both structural and political), the result is incoherence at the system level. And incoherence lends itself to ridicule.

Yale can most likely get away with stuff like this because people would chop off their dominant arm for a Yale degree: Georgetown... still very strong demand, yes, but not so high up in the stratosphere, where only the loftiest of Ivory Towers stretch, to completely ignore the toll these things take on students...

I should also make the point that University leadership has been trying to 'show their work' in a way that at least clearly lays out their evidence and thought process. This is helpful in making it so that even folks who disagree will at least be able to home in on what they are disagreeing with, rather than just talking past each other.
