It’s the end of the regular season for mid-major conferences, such as the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences, so ranked teams Brigham Young, Gonzaga and San Diego State will complete their pre-tournament schedules this week.
The Big 12 Conference controls the top two positions in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, as Kansas moved up from #3 and past Baylor, which fell to #2. The Jayhawks reclaimed the top spot after a 91-71 win against Iowa State and a 64-61 win at Baylor, while Baylor won at Oklahoma, 65-54 before the KU home court defeat. The rest of the top five in the poll scrambled positions, with Gonzaga falling one slot to #3 after defeating San Francisco (71-54) and losing at then-#23 ranked Brigham Young (91-78); San Diego State fell one slot to #5 after the Aztecs’ 26-game winning streak was snapped in a 66-63 loss against Nevada Las Vegas; Dayton advanced one slot to #4 after extending the Flyer winning streak to sixteen games with a 66-61 victory at Virginia Commonwealth and an 80-70 victory against Duquesne.
The Big East Conference now only has three teams ranked. Creighton advanced five spots to #10 with a 73-65 win at then-#19 ranked Marquette and an 81-59 win against then-#21 ranked Butler. Villanova remained ranked at #12 after two road wins, at DePaul (91-71) and at Xavier (64-55). Seton Hall moved up three slots to #13 after a 74-72 victory over then-#21 ranked Butler and an 81-65 win over St. John’s. Butler and Marquette also received votes in this week’s AP Top 25.
Brigham Young was the biggest gainer amongst ranked teams this week, moving up six spots to #17 after defeating Santa Clara (85-75) and the win over then-#2 ranked Gonzaga. Pennsylvania State dropped the furthest amongst ranked teams, falling seven spots to #16 after losses against Illinois (62-56) and at Indiana (68-60).
Marquette (formerly #19), Butler (formerly #21) and Arizona (formerly #24) all fell out of the AP Top 25 this week. The Golden Eagles are now on a three-game skid after the loss to then-#15 ranked Creighton and an 84-72 loss at Providence; the Bulldogs are likewise on a three-game losing streak after the losses at then-#16 ranked Seton Hall and then-#15 ranked Creighton; the Wildcats defeated Oregon State 89-63 and lost to #14 ranked Oregon in overtime, 73-72. Returning to the rankings in their stead are Michigan, Texas Tech and Michigan State. The Wolverines are now ranked #19 after road wins at Rutgers (60-52) and Purdue (71-63); the Red Raiders are now ranked #22 after wins against Kansas State (69-62) and at Iowa State (87-57); the Spartans are now ranked #24 after an 86-65 victory at Nebraska.
