Twenty two hours since last post to this thread. Has Hoya Talk given up? I'm sure the coaches and players haven't. I’m emotionally spent after this year. Lots of ups and downs. What he said

Are there still games to be played? Feels like we eulogized the season this weekend. In typical Hoya fashion I wouldn’t be surprised if we won tonight and then the bubble talk and resume discussion can begin in full force again. (Of course, ultimately to be undone by a loss to Xavier Saturday)
On a serious note, I’ll be interested to see what we try to throw at Howard and if there is any adjustments made. For the most part in the Ewing era, we have been a team that tends to play better in our second matchup with an opponent during the course of the year. The way PC shadowed (mugged) Howard might not fly with our depth and the home whistle for MU.
That being said much like the DePaul game where I thought it was key for us to crush their spirit early, I think given Marquette’s losing streak if we can be in this game at half, they may begin to panic a little. Still don’t like our chances, but I could see a scenario where they begin to play tight and we are playing loose with house money essentially (much like the way we played in some of our better wins where expectations were low).
If we are down double digits early, you might be able to turn off the game at half; a free shooting team like this will only make more if they have a green light and a cushion.

Will be watching and will be rooting for the upset and the bubble talk to reignite but it's hard to get excited for the game. We dont have to bodies or energy anymore to keep up with even decent teams. I hope a win can change things but not holding my breath.

Play like junkyard dogs, and don't blink...both teams can only play 5 guys at a time...we've won there before, let's do it again!

Gameday!!
It's getting harder to excited for each game going forward but it's still nice to wake up remembering we get to watch the guys gut it out on the court tonight. We have 3 more games (not including BET) to salvage our season. The first opportunity is tonight and probably our best opportunity. Need to contain Howard, pass the ball, and conserve energy. Be active, use your energy at the right spots, and play as a team. Hopefully Yurt and Mac got some practice time in because as good as they can both be, this no practice/hobbled thing is not working. Most of all, play hard for your teammates and don't forget to REBOUND!
Go Hoyas.

Was at the last Marquette game. Howard scored at will. Scored 42 of their 84 points. And that was us at full strength. I bet he's licking his chops waiting for tonight's game. I hope I'm wrong but this game could be a blowout loss.

We can still get in w/o a BET win.
Implausible? Certainly. Impossible? No.
The fat lady's not here yet. Let's win this.

Maybe get Robinson in early against Howard too. Gotta keep fresh legs for other guards. Switch Mosely, Pickett & Robinson on him throughout and try to keep guys fresh. I hope Yurt & Wahab can pound it as I think that is our only chance.

Still think 19 wins is the magic number for us including BET. If we can steal one here we’re right back in the conversation, with a winnable home game vs Xavier up next.
Predicting tonight will be a big Jagan Mosely game, I’m expecting him to make every shot difficult for Howard and to make some big momentum plays. Blair needs to hit some timely threes as well. I think this will be a close one so have to get to the line and make our free throws.
Let’s go Hoyas!!

No, I just don't think Xavier game will have much to do with our tournament chances. Definitely need a win there but it won't punch our ticket like one of the other 3 games against the top of the conference.

I hope Yurt & Wahab can pound it as I think that is our only chance. I understand the broad point here, but very few of Howard's points just come from him isolating and breaking his man down. It's about what happens when there are ball screens (on ball and off ball) and making sure all five guys are prepared to guard him and help. I'd also argue putting a Robinson on the floor allows Howard to rest on the other end, which is the last thing we want. Marquette was personally the most demoralizing for me on the defense front. Be on the lookout for these things tonight and see how our defense adjusts: 1. Screen the screener. Before Theo John screens for Howard, someone will set a screen on John's man. So now the defender is trailing and is running out late and can't hard hedge. If our guard is going under because he expects the hedge to be there, it's trouble. Or it allows Howard to just get downhill and drive by big easily 2. Flip the screen. John runs up like the screen will be on one side, our big starts jumping out to hedge, and then at last second the screen is flipped to the other side. Now there's no help as the big is on the wrong side 3. Split the screen. Hard hedge gets out too far and howard gets between screener and our big and its a clear drive to hoop 4. Attack the hard hedge, basically drive right at their outside hip. Either there's contact and a cheap foul, or its an attack at such an aggressive angle that the guard can't get back to recover 5. Slip the screen. Wouldn't expect Marquette to do this too much but the big runs out like he's screening and then immediately dives to the hoop. Our big is out there looking to hard hedge and its a clean run to the hoop 6. Off ball screens. Does our man guarding the screener do anything to help? If he stays home it leaves the chasing guard exposed and it's an easy shot. Our guards try to go over the top most of the time in a trail position but if they get picked off there's usually no help. Not all of these can be easily solved, and there's no one coverage that can cover all of this. They're a good offensive team for a reason. It's more about how much you make them work and the quality of the looks you give up. But it's certainly easier to cook up what shots you want to get when you know exactly how the defense will respond every time. Sometimes great defense still results in baskets but its naive to think that always happens to us.

Force Howard to get forty from the line. Stop him from shooting threes and pummel him on every drive.

I'll be watching and rooting as I've done all year. This year has been frustrating but I know I'll miss it once it's gone. March Madness is my favorite event regardless but man do I miss the excitement of Selection Sunday waiting to see where/who the Hoyas will be playing. The opportunities are still there to make the push, I just don't think there is enough energy/bodies to get it done.
As for tonight even though our defense has been bad this year, aren't we due for an opponent to just have a rough shooting night? Unfortunately Marq has been struggling and this has the feeling of a "get-right" game for them. Hopefully we can get enough stops, and make enough three's to pull off the upset.

I would rather have a couple of guys foul out with five or six minutes to than let Howard do what he did last time around. Yurt, Q, and Timmy have fifteen fouls to give. And I want Rick-Mahornesque fouls.
