“'I keep telling him about Wally Pipp,'Ewing said Thursday, recounting his conversations with third-string center Timothy Ighoefe. "Pipp, Ewing explained to the 6-foot-11 freshman from Nigeria, was the New York Yankees’ veteran first baseman famously replaced by Lou Gehrig after sitting out a game because of a headache. It was Ewing’s way of telling the center, who has played 14 minutes all season, that with Mac McClung nursing a foot injury and Omer Yurtseven dealing with what Ewing called a bad ankle sprain, Ighoefe may soon hear his number called." Wait, what? He's telling Ighoefe that he's going to replace Mac or Yurtseven in the starting lineup? That was from last week Thursday before the Butler game. It’s not a perfect metaphor, but Ewing was just saying that Tim needed to be ready to play and that he was capable of playing well.

I'm more impressed that Patrick Ewing knows who Wally Pipp was.

Sometimes pessimism creeps in, and this is one of those times. Count me as very worried about this game.

Sometimes pessimism creeps in, and this is one of those times. Count me as very worried about this game. Absolutely right. Who plays for the Hoyas? How well can they play? Has Ewing redefined the term "day-to-day" when it comes to injuries? Suiting up former players to be able to hold a scrimmage. What else can go wrong? This season has been a drain with nothing but bad breaks and disappointment as a valiant group of survivors tries to overcome long odds virtually every game.

How can Omer go from dressed & sitting against Butler to out? Unless he tweaked it I gotta assume he is ready to play 15 minutes. No idea on Mac.

This season has been a drain with nothing but bad breaks and disappointment as a valiant group of survivors tries to overcome long odds virtually every game. That’s one way to look at it. The way I look at it is a lot more glass-half-full, though, as despite all of the bad breaks, this team is sitting in the mid-40s in KenPom and NET rankings on February 19, which is the best spot we’ve been in at this point in the season since 2015. That counts for something, even if it’s not where we want the program to ultimately end up.

The fact is that it was expected- several times- that the bottom would fall out of this season. Not only has that not happened, but it could be said that - with however many players they happen to have each night- the Hoyas are playing the best basketball of the season. They are getting better, which is what we want, right?

And if so, can I borrow your crystal ball? Only for a few minutes?

I'm more impressed that Patrick Ewing knows who Wally Pipp was. No doubt he heard plenty about "getting Pipp'd" by Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas from the NY media during the 1999 playoff run.

Obviously winning tonight would be huge but I think as important will be the size of the crowd. Anything less than 7-8 thousand in my mind would be a sad reflection on the program. If, after the Butler game, students and local alums can't get themselves to Cap One Arena tonight then I worry about where we are going. Yeah, yeah I know 8:30 start on a weeknight but that's no excuse. What, watching Michael Bloomberg at tonight's Dem debate is more important?

We are unranked, playing an unranked opponent and in 8th place in our league. I don’t expect a great crowd. I love this team, but I don’t think you draw casual fans.

My how times have changed - when we were kids, an 8:30 game on a weeknight was a perfect reason to break up the workaday world of keg parties and promiscu... eh, I mean of long hours in Lauinger and uplifting charity work. Far from being an excuse, it was our raison d'etre.

GAMEDAY!!
Winning this one is important to keep our chances alive. Providence has had a good BE run but we need a win over them to stay in the NCAAT discussion. Stay focused for all 40 minutes and hopefully our good shooting is here to stay.
Go Hoyas!!!

Them being favored on our home court sickens me...I just hope we have some good news on the health front...lets beat those Friars on our home court! Zone them (maybe box and one on Diallo)...control our defensive glass and don't let them get extra shots/offensive boards...superior ball movement and out shoot them...Go Hoyas!...be ready for a big time fight!
