Something that jumped out at me looking at Seton Hall's stats...I didn't realize how bad of a season Myles Cale is having. That's mainly because he was very good last year and then lit us up in first game so I figured it was just business as usual.
He's 20-68 from 3 (29%)...and that includes the 5-6 vs. us, because of course it does. Outside of Hoya game he is 15-62 (24%).
If McKnight is out, a lot might come down to Cale or whether Mamu is able to start taking back more responsibility for them.

Time for this Hoya team to catch a break and get McClung back. I know many felt there was better ball movement without McClung, and they were right for that one game, but no way this team is going to be competitive against a quality opponent in his absence. Kid is confident and a competitor and often that may come off as selfish. I used to feel that way too, but I now believe he is totally coachable and can learn and this team needs him if there are to be any more feel-good moments this season. Agree that Mac is essential for this team to remain competitive and I agree Mac is extremely coachable. The issue is our coach needs to be willing to coach him. I thought Ewing did a better job last year in this regard, and I understand it is because he had better options behind Mac last year. Hopefully Sunday's game demonstrated to Mac that his teammates are more capable on offense than he may have thought and demonstrated to Ewing that there is the depth to pull Mac out for a few possessions when he starts hunting shots. It really is not hard to recognize when Mac starts pressing, just swap him out for a minute and get him refocused or run a play designed for him to get a real shot. Coach should be able to handle this.

Hopefully we come with a different defensive game plan or we'll be PNR'ed to death again.

Hopefully we come with a different defensive game plan or we'll be PNR'ed to death again. Been thinking about this more and more over the last few days. One of the huge benefits with McKnight out is that he won't be available to run the PnR. He had 10 assists against us a few weeks back. SHU will likely try to continue run the PnR, but using Powell instead of McKnight. Whoever Yurt/Q is guarding will likely be the screener, as we never demonstrated we could hard hedge effectively with either in that game. Feel like this is a game where we need Jagan to really step up and face guard Powell hard. Deny initial possession as best as he can. And ask him to fight around those screens without help, provide some contests on Powell and force him off the line if possible. If he can do that, I think Yurt/Q staying at home will effectively neutralize both Gill and Obiagu down low. Neither is particularly skilled with the ball; if we aren't giving up uncontested dunks and layups, I don't see either going for 15+ again. A couple potential wrinkles SHU could throw in there: if they trust Cale to facilitate the PnR to move Powell off the ball (don't overhelp!), or if they use Mamu as the screener for some pick and pop action. We need to be ready for both scenarios. Second point: given Powell is going to be asked to take on more of the ball-handling duties, I do think that it's another opportunity for us to use the press in spots. If we can either tire him out in the backcourt or force SHU to use a different guard (Cale, Reynolds or Nelson) to beat pressure, it may lead to some turnovers and easy baskets if we can catch them off guard.

Pat had prepped them all offseason and pre season to be ready to play a pressing defense with trapping in large quantities. We saw it in spurts with the full roster compliment. But it was a work in progress with a lot of new guys and rotations being worked in. Weve seen its success several times this season. Obviously the staff has had to throttle down that defensive plan with the depth issues after the departures. But I wonder if the staff has to roll the dice on it a lot more down the stretch. And worry about foul trouble and fatigue later. I really believe, especially with a 3 guard lineup at almost all times, that to have our best chance at a successful season we will need to utilize it far more than we saw in the 1st half of the big east slate. For this roster as constructed, forcing turnovers, speeding up the game, and minimizing some rebounding deficiencies/man to man matchup problems seems like a necessity.

Seton Hall -1
I feel like that might be the line with a healthy Mac; without Mac that would be very generous, but maybe no McKnight factored in...

Seton Hall -1 I feel like that might be the line with a healthy Mac; without Mac that would be very generous, but maybe no McKnight factored in... That seems extremely low. This Seton Hall team has smoked us the last two times we’ve played. And probably without Mac; Not seeing how we keep this one close.

Wonder if they didn’t factor Mac’s absence or they know McKnight is playing now?

GAMEDAY!
This one will be tough, even without McKnight SH is a good team. If we win this game, then I'll anoint it season defining as that would put us back in the tournament. Share the ball, take open shots, and hustle.
Go Hoyas!!

I’d be surprised if they risked playing him against a Mac-less team, but if he plays we have a very small chance of the upset tonight.

This game is a test for Omer. Last time Hoyas met SH centers took Omer's lunch money and he didn't stand up. He's got to go hard tonight and show that he has learned something since then. Stay in the game, no early foul trouble, have impact both ways, and go hard to the basket and dunk!!!!! Add some hardwood to his finesse game!

I'm hoping Pickett shows us his good game tonight. Really need someone to step in the absence of Mac. Blair did it against St. John's.
