Question: prep schools like the one Beard will attend are costly. Who foots the bill? Are you saying that his parents can't 'foot the bill'? Do you have some knowledge of their financial status?

I think Ed’s question was completely reasonable. It seems like people are trying to create some controversy out of it. It’s not self-evident that prep schools give traditional scholarships, and we all know that there’s lots of dirty money in recruiting.

On their website, it says 60% of ALL students receive some form of tuition assistance.
I'm sure the poster didn't mean anything by it, but you could easily see how a parent or family member of Beard's could get offended by that question.

One would hope not. But I am sure it has happened. I’ll never understand why people have so much trouble with these basketball players getting compensated for their unique and valuable skill.

Boy those kids get up, don't they? Yes sir! That’s Chicago basketball all day. I see why DJ heading to Duke. We are lucky to get Beard even if it’s for the 2021 class.

Question: prep schools like the one Beard will attend are costly. Who foots the bill? I am quoting myself to point out what I actually said. If you think that was an insult to the Beard family, you have a problem, not me. There are lots of young men who choose to go to some prep school to improve their basketball skills and their academics. These schools tend to be very expensive, well beyond the reach of most families. My gut tells me there must be some "benefactors" paying most of the bills. My gut also tells me that these "benefactors" are not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. So I re-ask the question: who foots the bill? To say that X% of students receive aid does not answer the question because that could be minimal aid or loans or other things not grants.

Because the inference is they can't afford it and that something shady is going on. Either way, nobody on the board has this answer. If you're that curious call the school and ask how they receive funding.

I only have a problem when they break the rules. I have come around to the "likeness" concept. I don't want college sports to turn into a straightforward bidding war, but however it turns out - just follow the rules.

The problem is that the rules are arbitrary and meant to funnel all the money away from the labor and into the pockets of a few who create very little of the value. The rules are absurd and unjust.

If you're that curious call the school and ask how they receive funding. Prep schools are like colleges. They fundraise, and have alumni that donate and many specifically want their funds to support athletics. If the prep school has a focus on competing at a high level, then they will recruit and bring in student athletes to play there, just like college. Nothing shady about it in most cases.

I started to post this exact same thing you said here when I read the initial post by Easy Ed! Some people can't even tell when they are expressing their sad and tired biases. Then they get offended and try to play the victim when you call them on it.

I understand that the teams involved need to abide by the rules even though they are unjust. What I don’t understand is why fans who are not part of the system seem to think these rules are ok and do nothing to help change them. I get that the people who would need to change the rules are the same ones who benefit from them so the odds of real charge are small. But, if the fans aligned around the idea that the players are getting screwed and agitated for change, something might happen.

Interesting thought, but how would fans actually align? Many fans are still against the concept of ANY compensation beyond a full scholarship. Now that players are allowed to get some indeterminate amount for their "image" etc., many more fans will think that plus a scholarship is sufficient. Some fans want unlimited unregulated ability to get money from any source. Are fans going to refuse to go to games? Refuse to buy team/player merchandise? Refuse to watch on TV, support sponsors, etc.?

Tyler Beard is looking good. All the media reported negativity coming out of Chicago right now he’s a bright spot for us Hoya fans.
