The Nuttycombe Invitational at the University of Wisconsin will be the biggest race of the year besides the NCAA XC finals. There are 36 teams entered in both the women's and men's races. For the men the three time defending champ NAU (coached by GU grads Mike Smith and Becca DeLoache) are entered in the race. This is an excellent chance to pick up at-large points for both the men and women, considering how tight the regional race will be; again the top two from each region automatically qualify.
The women list 12 runners, which the men list 11.
The race is on Friday.

The men's B team only has four runners, so they will not be involved in the team scoring. Those running are Tristan Forsythe, Shea Weilbaker, Quinn Nicholson, and Maazin Ahmed.

The women's race went pretty much to form. Tulsa and Indiana beat the Hoyas and they were ranked lower. The big defeat by the Hoyas were Syracuse, who were 15th coming in.

The finish for the men: 79. Jack Van Scoter 24:28.2 89. Spencer Brown 24:32.0 123. Price Owens 24:45.4 124. Nick Wareham 24:45.7 133. Rusty Kijdych 24:50.7 168. Ty Brownlow 25:04.4 205. Matt Bouthillette 25:41.4
Another great 22 second spread from 1 to 5. But the coach would like some front runners. Evidence of this today: Georgetown was the highest finishing team without a runner in the top 50.

Would have to think men disappointed with placing, though probably see room for improvement. seems like spencer went out too fast and faded steadily while nick wareham did not have a good race. Would think that have to get an auto at regionals to make NCAA. Margins are tight--small improvements from top guys can have big impact on scoring.
Women probably view performance as ok-not great.
Same issue with both teams--they have a number of good or potentially good runners but no real elites like both squads had a few years ago--and for most of the last 3 decades.

As far as at-large points, the unranked teams that beat the Hoyas were Southern Utah and Gonzaga. Furman finished ahead of the men and they were just behind the Hoyas in receiving votes. The ranked teams that the Hoyas beat are Eastern Kentucky (#25), Wyoming (#30), and Syracuse (#12). Also, Colorado State was ranked #13 in a previous poll.
