Bill Bidwell (C53?) was named VP of the Chicago football Cardinals while an undergrad at Georgetown. Cards owner, his father, had died in 1947. His mother became President upon the death of Charles Bidwell, Sr. Bill and his brother, Charles, Jr., became co-owners in 1962. Charles, Jr, (Charlie) was GU class of 1950. In 1960 they had moved the team to St. Louis where they were the St. Louis football Cardinals. In 1972 Bill bought out Charlie's interest to become sole owner. He moved the team again, to Phoenix, where they became the Arizona Cardinals. Bill was a two-sport athlete at Georgetown Prep before entering Georgetown.
May he rest in peace.

His son was my 1985 classmate. Godspeed and condolences to the family. Amidst the tributes, there was the story that in the midst of the Depression, George Halas nearly lost control of the Bears when he was short on paying back a loan. Charles Bidwill, Bill's father, fronted Halas $5,000 to meet the payment. Over the years, Georgetown alumni held controlling interests in three major sports franchises: Bill and Charles Bidwill with the Cardinals, Dan Reeves with the Cleveland/LA Rams, and Walter Briggs with the Detroit Tigers. Edward Bennett Williams and Bill Shea were minority owners of the Redskins.
