NBC News reports a large-scale scheme to cheat on college entrance exams has been busted by the FBI and federal prosecutors in Boston, according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.
The alleged scheme focused on getting students admitted to elite universities as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities and helping potential students cheat on their college exams, according to the indictment. The scandal involves students who tied to or did attend Georgetown, Stanford, UCLA, the University of San Diego, USC, University of Texas, Wake Forest and Yale.
Breaking story, more details to follow.

Really hope we're only implicated via some rich parents trying to buy their way into the school and not via the basketball program...

I posted a story about a former coach at Penn on the Basketball Bribery thread last night. Seems this is part of the same scheme. Curious as to what other names come out.

Can't imagine this applies to our hoops team which is what those that post on this board care about the most...but depending on who knew what/when, there have to be some nervous people pretty high up in the athletic department.

I'm also very curious how far back these scandals are from. If Lori Laughlin is being indicted this could be from ages ago.

I presume this was moved over here because whatever GU coaches are allegedly involved were not basketball coaches?
It appears to be related outside basketball and the original poster's headline ("GEORGETOWN IMPLICATED IN NEW CHEATING SCHEME") was neither accurate nor appropriate.--Admin

Separate article from ABC News says Loughlin and her husband paid $500,000 to have their daughters recruited as prospective members of the Southern Cal women's crew team, even though they did not participate in crew. This is sounding like non-revenue generating sports were targeted by parents, with the idea that their child was participating as a prospective athlete in a sport, when in fact they did not, just to "fill out" the high school resume. Seriously doubt any revenue-generating sports are involved, especially since the Ivies (Yale) don't award athletic scholarships. Not an NCAA issue.

The indictment naming Ernst is publicly available. He is alleged to have received $2.7 million in bribes from 2012-2018 for using his admissions spots on non-competitive tennis players. In 2015, he supposedly used all 3 of his spots on these kids - how does that go unnoticed when none of them end up playing tennis at Georgetown?

12 years at Gtown is a long time. I'm curious how often this was attempted with the Gtown tennis teams or if any of the "athletes" ever actually competed.

Reading through the relevant indictment, it is alleged that Ernst received $2.7 million in bribes to enable "at least" twelve admissions applicants to be designated as tennis recruits, although in many cases they were not even competitive players. It appears that he is accused of involvement in the lion's share of payments.

The updated WaPo story focuses on the celebrity parents and the schools they got their kids into. Ignores the local Hoya angle. Dissed by the Post again!
