For a start, how about fixing the front page if the attendance number is incorrect and stop giving legs to an apparently false story? Good idea. John, like most of us, has a full time day job that comes first.

Will do when I get home, plus an explanation of what is in play, namely, paid versus actual attendance. My guess is that the arena's number is the former, and Georgetown's number is the latter. It's not a false story, just one which Georgetown added, then corrected, without any explanation.

The only discrepancy between reported attendance is last night's game. Really feels like someone figured out that was a bad number and fudged it upwards. I understand the point about late arriving crowds, but none of the other numbers seem to be reported upwards from gametime.

Apparently Georgetown cares enough to change the number and then bug the WaPo into changing their article.

Isn't it also just as possible that the lower number was wrong and was accurately corrected?

Just to point out how everyone may make mistakes (though this one is weird, the 4300 figure seems low on my end as it was more crowded than the last few games weeknight IMO) and to call out how bad the Hoyas presence is, guhoyas.com/news/2020/2/4/mens-basketball-georgetown-hosts-no-12-13-seton-hall-wednesday.aspx_ Screenshot size here is absurdly small, but it's on the Hoyas website and if you can click on it that might work also. I found this checking to see if the post game recap had listed attendance, which of course it didn't) Scrolling down to the Seton Hall section you find a bullet point on Seton Hall star "Miles Powell." Everyone makes mistakes and even those who get paid to update (I think) make mistakes. Granted the errors the Hoyas made are horribly embarrassing and take one look at the Seton Hall team sheet over the last four years (9 Games?) and is something very available to everyone, while this one is a contrasting number on multiple platforms (2500 people is a lot) and it's going to happen. Mistakes happen and at least the people updating information on here, put more effort in than those who post it onto the Hoyas official website.

I don't buy that given what Carino wrote. 4,344 might have been attendance at tip off, and they revised it upwards afterwards. But it's the only time they've done that. This isn't a consistent practice.

Will do when I get home, plus an explanation of what is in play, namely, paid versus actual attendance. My guess is that the arena's number is the former, and Georgetown's number is the latter. It's not a false story, just one which Georgetown added, then corrected, without any explanation. This is the most likely explanation of what happened. If you look at the monitor in Jerry Carino's tweet, it's displaying the StatBroadcast live stats feed for the game. Most NCAA schools use StatBroadcast to provide live stats at their venues, for the benefit of the media, announcers, and such. The feed includes the live stats, box score, key trends (Team X is on a 12-2 run, who's in foul trouble), and so on. It also includes...the attendance figure for the game. The attendance isn't typically added until close to the end of the game, so this isn't a matter of there being an "updated" or partial attendance number. 99 percent of the time, the number in the live stats feed is the "official" one that ends up in box scores and game recaps all over the media world. Of course, there's "Actual Attendance" (the real number of butts in seats that night) vs. "Paid Attendance" (Actual Attendance + Season Ticket Holders and others who didn't show, unused giveaway tickets, etc.). The Arena and school definitely know both numbers, but they're always going to report Paid Attendance for obvious reasons. Occasionally the other figure leaks out--a few seasons ago, Casual Hoya used to regularly post the two numbers, probably b/c they had a source in the SID office, Verizon Center, or McDonough. It would seem the most likely explanation here is that whoever from Georgetown entered the attendance into the StatBroadcast feed accidentally/inadvertently entered the "Actual Attendance". The media writing about the game, ESPN/NCAA box scores, etc. all included that number (FWIW, it STILL hasn't been corrected in the feed a day later). When GUHoyas/the SID got around to posting a recap/box score, they stuck in Paid Attendance, and probably flagged that to the Washington Post to get them to change their article.

Isn't it typical for all universities to report paid attendance versus actual? And except for high-interest games (of which we have few given our level of play the last several years), usually paid attendance is a good bit higher than actual? I seem to recall an article on DePaul a few years ago, where their actual attendance was only something near 1,000, even though the reported number was higher. EDIT: Yes, the DePaul article is here. The disparity between their paid/actual attendance was pretty significant, too.

FWIW, I was there and it looked and felt like at least 7,000, not about 4,000 as initially reported.

You can't really unforget the photo of an empty chair with a contract and pen when Ewing was hired, or the manifesto, or the negative banner on top of the forum when we lost in the tourney.

Re: attendance. The Veterans Ticket Foundation has 278 free tickets for vets available for the DePaul game. 318 were originally made available (presumably from Georgetown Ticket Office) so 30 takers so far.
Apparently, SFS was also giving away tickets to SFS alums as well.
