Do we know Pickett isn't living in the gym? This is a little bit of a pet peeve of mine. Why is it that whenever a player struggles, we always assume they aren't working hard, and aren't living in this gym? I have absolutely no idea whether Pickett lives in the gym or is there all the time, but I don't think most other people do, either. I just never assume that a player's struggles are because they aren't working hard enough, unless there's a reason to think otherwise. And with Pickett, we really have no reason to think that. It is possible for a guy to work hard and still fall short of where we want him to be. Can you actually live in a gym over the summer and show no progress as a ballhandler? Either he's doing something wrong in his training or he isn't working enough on the right areas. I'm in the gym a lot..my game has shown very little progress in the past forty years.

His defense has improved dramatically, his handle has gotten better and his shot is about the same. We just need him confident and in the offensive flow.

Given all the college and professional athletes who do this (in various sports) and fail to improve, I think the answer is yes. The G league and European leagues (or the minor leagues in baseball) are littered with these guys.

Developing a good handle, especially with Pickett's (possibly growing) measurements is something that takes years, not months. It's not like shooting, which is largely mechanical and muscle memory or defense which is technical, positioning and memory. It's one half having complete knowledge and ownership over every way your body moves when you dribble and other half knowing the same about the balls physics. And that takes time, no matter what drills or how long you do them is. Its not a skill that can be microwaved in my opinion. I could be wrong though. If there are basketball players out there that dramatically improved their handles as non-PGs in less than two years, I'd love to who and how.

Yes, tonight represents a bit of a fulcrum. Win and jump into 3rd place alone, lose and drop back to fighting to stay out of last. I don't seriously think Villanova or Marquette can be caught this season but third place is Georgetown's for the taking.
I like the team's general progression and I think they can win any single game left on the schedule. Given the youth (starting 3 freshmen!), the inconstancy that results from inexperience, and the parity in the conference, I'd be very hesitant to predict any specific game as win though.
I am confident in predicting that it will be an entertaining ride...

Tomorrow morning the board is either further crunching numbers on getting a bid and thinking about toppling Villanova or Ewing can't coach, his rotations are terrible, he missed a timeout at the 4:32 mark, etc. I do take comfort in that either instance, DFW will be here to be a wet blanket. hm

Very, very big game, given the opponent, at home and the schedule.

Yeah, I watch a lot of Wizards basketball and I’d use Brad Beal as an example of how truly hard it is to improve your handle. His dribble is far and away better than it was when he was drafted, but it’s still a work in progress and he’s been in the league since 2012. Pickett’s handle will improve, but it’s gonna be a long evolution. And despite his number of turnovers, to me it does look like he’s worked on it, he just not as capable in live game situations as he might have thought initially. In the mean time, he needs to continue to simplify what he’s trying to do with the ball in his hands. He had a couple straight line drives for a floater that have worked where he only needs to take like 2 dribbles, posting his man in the paint, all of which is something I think he’s very capable of and should do more.

Trying to relate this to past Hoyas who showed great improvement in their handle.
I don't believe Jessie Sapp and Jason Clark showed up with a handle good enough to run spot PG duties. Within 2 seasons, their handles had improved dramatically, to the point where they could initiate offense from the PG position. Markel's handle tightened up dramatically between years 1-2-3. Pickett is so tall and gangly, though, you wonder if there is an upper limit to his handle potential...
Actually, if you ponder these examples, it's pretty amazing that Mac and James have come in with such tight handles as freshmen. Good things portend...

Very, very big game, given the opponent, at home and the schedule. Yes, and also keep in mind the other importance of getting as many wins as possible is avoiding Wednesday night at the BET. If we are 6th or above, we avoid a game on Wednesday that is no sure thing, and then probably play a competitive (and winnable) game on Thursday night. I much prefer our chances of winning the tournament over 3 days instead of 4.

It dramatically improved from year 1 to year 4, but thats 3 years. 2) These are all point guard examples, players who already have a much stronger foundation that SFs/PFs and have likely spent many many more hours from middle school through high school developing their handle than players that play more off the ball. While their progress is admirable, I don't think their progression is a fair benchmark for progression for a SF.

If anyone could link me to a stream for the game tonight, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't get CBS Sports in my package and I don't think the game is going to be on any alternate channels in the DC area.

Agree with you, which is why I equivocated by saying there might be an upper limit on Pickett's progression given his tall/gangly frame. Durant's handle has improved dramatically over time, but he is an otherworldly, off-the-charts talent.

It was something I myself was thinking of as well...does Pickett's ridiculous length impede his ability to learning handle the ball without turning it over or getting stripped? Maybe so which would explain a lot.
