The only Democrat I could possibly vote for is Biden. His Chinese menu Catholicism bothers me, but at his core he is a centrist. On the other side, I don’t see any way Trump is not the nominee but if you wanted another Republican, John Kasich has always impressed me with his seriousness of purpose and attention to detail. Do you ever wish the time machine that delivered you here could be fixed and return you safely to 1950? 1950, no. The 80’s on the other hand...

She's going to be more of a factor than folks are giving her credit for.

In the event Trump declares a faux "national emergency", please read: Unknown to most Americans, a parallel legal regime allows the president to sidestep many of the constraints that normally apply. The moment the president declares a “national emergency”—a decision that is entirely within his discretion—more than 100 special provisions become available to him. While many of these tee up reasonable responses to genuine emergencies, some appear dangerously suited to a leader bent on amassing or retaining power. For instance, the president can, with the flick of his pen, activate laws allowing him to shut down many kinds of electronic communications inside the United States or freeze Americans’ bank accounts. Other powers are available even without a declaration of emergency, including laws that allow the president to deploy troops inside the country to subdue domestic unrest. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/01/presidential-emergency-powers/576418/

I kinda want to see him do it because he instantly creates precedent for us to deal with climate change in hundreds of new and different ways. That's an actual emergency.
Your choice, Republicans. You create a precedent under this guy, it's gonna get used.

I can see Trump attempting to use the Defense Production Act to build the wall. Title I: The priorities authority is used extensively to ensure timely performance of military and space contracts and orders. Use in support of homeland security programs is more limited, but growing, to: ensure timely procurement of resources to save lives and property under emergency conditions; protect or restore critical infrastructure operations; and to counter threats of terrorism within the United States. While the allocations authority has not been used since the end of the Cold War, standards and procedures for use of this authority have been established to support effective use of this authority, when needed. www.fema.gov/defense-production-act-overviewHe has contemplated its use before: On Friday, Bloomberg broke the story that Trump would use the Defense Production Act and another law, the Federal Power Act, to mandate that certain coal and nuclear facilities remain open. “The Department [of Energy] is exercising its DPA and FPA authority by directing System Operators (as defined in the Directive),” a draft plan reads, “for a period of twenty-four (24) months, to purchase or arrange the purchase of electric energy or electric generation capacity from a designated list of Subject Generation Facilities (SGFs) sufficient to forestall any further actions toward retirement, decommissioning, or deactivation of such facilities during the pendency of DOE’s Order.” www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2018/06/01/trumps-plan-to-use-a-cold-war-era-law-to-bolster-the-coal-industry-explained/www.lawfareblog.com/declaring-emergency-build-border-wall-statutory-arguments

Unfair. Two-year-olds can convey what they want quite clearly. And they're stubborn about sticking with it.

I'm a little disappointed this is being used as a threat to get him to back down, because taking the L here and having him declare national emergency would create a legitimate end-run around our broken political system so that we could actually get some large scale action on climate change.

Yet another reason why Mattis is no longer Secretary of Defense.

SS Trump taking on water. Go to general quarters and start the bilge pumps! In the new poll, released Sunday morning, 53 percent of respondents (including 53 percent of independents) blame Trump and Republicans for the shutdown (now the longest ever). Only 29 percent overall (and less than a quarter of independents) blame the Democrats. Fifty-four percent oppose the border wall. As for the musings from Trump and some other Republicans about declaring a national emergency to fund the wall, only 24 percent say the border situation is a crisis. Not a single part of Trump’s framing has taken hold with a majority of the American public. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/13/no-wonder-trump-is-such-foul-mood/?utm_term=.efb131de591f
