Texas AG accuses state House speaker of being ‘intoxicated,’ calls for resignation

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday called for the resignation of the top lawmaker in the state House of Representatives, accusing fellow Republican Dade Phelan of being “in a state of apparent debilitating intoxication” while presiding over the legislature late last week.

Rep. Andrew Murr (R), chairman of the General Investigating Committee, did not respond to messages Tuesday but in a letter obtained by the Associated Press said the panel is investigating Paxton’s settlement with his former staffers who reported the attorney general to the FBI. In the letter, Murr also directed Paxton and his aides to “preserve all communications” related to the settlement and to the firing of whistleblowers and “the alleged wrongful conduct engaged in by you and your office.”

While Republicans dominate the state legislature and Texas politics, intraparty fighting has sown deep divisions among some lawmakers there. Earlier this month, the Texas House voted 147-0 to expel state Rep. Bryan Slaton (R) a day after the lawmaker resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct with a 19-year-old aide.

Ken Paxton may have violated multiple state laws and ethics rules, a Texas House of Representatives committee disclosed in a hearing Wednesday morning that summarized its months-long investigation into the Republican attorney general.

The outlet quoted one investigator, Erin Epley, who urged the committee to “look at the pattern and the deviations from the norm, questions not just of criminal activity but of ethical impropriety and for lacking in transparency.”

Investigators said Paxton pressured the open records division in his office to help a donor and friend, Nate Paul, in his legal fight with a nonprofit group in Austin. In exchange for that help, investigators said, Paul helped with a “floor-to-ceiling renovation” at Paxton’s home and employed a woman with whom Paxton allegedly had an extramarital affair. The investigators also said Paxton wrongly fired several former staffers who reported his inappropriate behavior to authorities.

Paxton has been under felony indictment for securities fraud since 2015, the year he became attorney general. The FBI opened an investigation into Paxton in November 2020 on allegations he used his office to benefit a wealthy donor, the AP reported.

Bob Beauprez, the treasurer of the American Conservative Union and a board member for eight years, said he had “lost confidence” in the organization’s financial statements and could not solicit donations “in good faith.” He blamed Schlapp for excessive staff departures and suggested that violations of the organization’s bylaws could expose the storied institution to lawsuits or even criminal prosecution.

“A cancer has been metastasizing within the organization for years. It must be diagnosed, treated, and cured, or it will destroy” the organization and its foundation, Beauprez said in the letter, which was obtained by The Washington Post. “I’ve come to think that the expectations for my role as a director and officer is much the same as that of a mushroom — ‘To be kept in the dark and fed a lot of manure.’ I no longer am willing to comply.”

Maybe Paxton will be in the job market soon if he is convicted in his impeachment trial. This guy is REALLY GOP Presidential timber isn't he?

A bipartisan, Republican-led committee in the Texas House of Representatives voted Thursday to recommend impeaching embattled Attorney General Ken Paxton, setting the stage for lawmakers to potentially oust the state official.

The vote by the Committee on General Investigating came a day after committee investigators testified about the findings of their months-long probe into Paxton’s alleged misconduct.

Representatives for Paxton’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The office shared on social media a video of one of its staffers calling the probe inaccurate and questioning the legality of the committee’s recommendation.

AUSTIN, Texas — In a historic vote Saturday, the Texas House of Representatives decided to impeach Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton over allegations of illegal activities related to one of his political donors.

Paxton will immediately and temporarily be suspended from his duties pending a trial in the state Senate.

Rep. David Spiller, a Republican who serves on the House General Investigating Committee, told members that, even though he thinks Paxton has a "brilliant legal mind," he still violated the law.

"He put the interest of himself above the laws of the state of Texas," Spiller said. "He put the interest of himself over his staff who tried to advise him on multiple occasions that he was about to violate the law."

Minutes before the Texas House started the impeachment procedures on Saturday, former President Donald Trump posted on social media that Paxton is a friend of his and that he would "fight" Republicans who allow the impeachment to proceed.

They voted to increase the debt ceiling three times under the Mango presidency. They also voted for an over $2 trillion tax break for the wealthy and big corporations. But what really hurt was when a Mack truck rolled through Ripon not long after, wrenched up a building revered as the sentimental birthplace of the GOP, and plunked it down on a commercial corridor a little more than a mile away.

The Little White Schoolhouse, where a group of Whigs, Free Soilers and Democrats met to form a new, anti-slavery party in 1854, had been moved several times before, and the building’s owner, the Ripon Chamber of Commerce, said the new location would make it easier to accommodate visitors when Republicans hold their national convention in Milwaukee next year. But the National Register of Historic Places was not impressed, telling officials the schoolhouse would be delisted. The episode sparked a minor controversy in Republican Party circles around the state.

Whatever the logic — more parking, a planned visitor center with actual bathrooms in an old bank building next door — this piece of GOP history now sits across from a vape shop, near a car dealership, a Culver’s restaurant and a sewage treatment plant. For Bachleitner, chair of the Fond du Lac County GOP, it seemed evocative — not so much of the party’s history as, at least in Wisconsin, its decline.
