Would also note that the new coaches(VB, rowing, tennis) are from the local area--probably entailing no or very light relo costs

Nice to see a lot of preseason games at Georgetown The new facility is really helping with that - and I hope the home games are a help with recruiting.
At this point I can only hope the new Coach Rens works out. Hiring one assistant coach this close to the start of the season isn't great news but let's see. Program needed shaking up and he gets his shot.

Where is the volleyball team lockeroom, playing and practicing? I assume still in McD?
Good luck to the ladies this season, a lot of road time at the beginning of the academic year.

Its just more evidence the school doesnt support the sport as they r unwilling to budget for 2 trips in preseason like most other programs. Coach Rens has done nothing with recruiting since hes been named coach. His personality and reputation are catching up with him and he wont be able to recruit foreign players at GU like he has at other schools to make up for it. He did schedule a WEAK nonconference so he should start the season off ok.

Well, it's nice to see them actually post something...anything...about the volleyball team. And, on the bright side, it was almost a month earlier than last year's schedule announcement. Hopefully we'll get to see something about incoming players in the relatively near future -- but they never posted anything about last year's incoming players, so I'm not holding my breath. According to Rich Kern, they've got four freshmen coming in: - Lara Adekunle - 6'1" MB from Chicago (Sports Performance)
- Elissa Barbosa - 5'11" OH/DS from San Antonio (Alamo)
- Jessica Cusi - 5'4" L from San Francisco (Vision)
- Hannah Hamling - 6'3" RS from Warwick, NY
I don't know much about any of them, but three are from highly regarded clubs. I'd think that there will also be a transfer or two. Even if we don't get something introducing the new players, maybe we'll see an updated roster soon. It'd be nice to know who the Hoyas will have on the floor against Howard in just five short weeks. A fan can hope, right?
I'm hopeful that Coach Rens will bring a renewed energy to the Hoyas, and we'll see them turn a corner. I think Creighton and Marquette have separated themselves from the rest of the conference, but after that it could honestly be pretty wide open. I'd love to see the Hoyas at least with a shot to be in contention for a spot in the tournament after their first trip through the Big East. I don't feel like it's really possible to judge Coach Rens until we see who he puts on the floor and how they play...particularly because some of the questions right now might have as much (or quite possibly more) to do with lack of information and/or support from the department.

Hey MrHoyaSaxa..... it'd be great if you had antything positive to say. Not sure why you are on the board except to say how awful everything is. You are wrong: kids DO want to go to Georgetown for the experience and education. And if you are a really good, maybe great, volleyball player that would be no different. I'm hoping the new coaches and players turn this around in the next couple of years. Yes, though, they do need funding. You don't know what the administration has promised in that regard though, MrHoyaSaxa.

I think you are simply seeing disappointment from MrHS. I went through it myself in an earlier time. I take your point we don't know what the commitment from the administration was to Rens but the current situation that he has hired only one assistant coach who isn't the most experienced leads to the view that things/resources haven't changed. Hope they have.
The challenge as we all know is to find really good VB players who want the challenge of GU academics. I coach youth athletics and try to tell kids to use athletics as a way to get into great schools. Very few really listen to me.

Would think you are right re recruiting: if the new coach can recruit well the team should be decent/good.
I think most kids who play sports today at an elite level do know its a way to a top school, though that obviously varies to some degree by sport, geography and family circumstances.
Expecting the univ to add more resources to VB is insane given, Gtwn's financial situation, total lack of alumni support for the program, poor competitive history of the program, high academic cost to get high elite recruits, and generally poor prospects for top academic schools other than Stanford in the sport. The only reason we even have scholarships in the sport is that there were relatively few women's sports at the time title 9 was introduced and Gtown picked VB to add scholarships to(not a good decision). If the ath depart did a rational reallocation of resources I'm sure VB's scholarships would be going elsewhere. Its only the univ's aversion to change and generally poor mgmt that gives sports and academic programs for that matter just enough resources to compete at a mediocre level but not enough to be elite.

Apparently Coach Rens has been busy. The roster was updated recently to include another Assistant Coach, a Volunteer Assistant and a DOVO. I can’t say that I know anything about any of the additions, but at least they’ll be heading into the season with a full staff - actually a bigger staff than they’ve had in recent memory. I’m hopeful that they’ll work well together and help lead the Hoyas to improved performance. Now, hopefully we’ll get to see the roster updates to show new players and transfers (if any) in the coming days. guhoyas.com/roster.aspx?roster=275&path=wvball#sidearm-roster-coaches

Two quick thoughts on rosters -- an addition and a subtraction.
First, an addition: I noticed that Herrington, who was removed from the roster last spring, is again listed. She had some nice contributions last year while Eichie was out, and the Hoyas will certainly need help at MB given the current roster.
Second, a subtraction: I see that a key UMES OH from last season is not listed on their 2018 roster. She was first team all-conference and an AVCA East All-Region Honorable Mention. Hmmmm....

Well, it's August...
I'm not sure exactly when the team reports to campus, but I'd imagine it must be pretty soon if previous years are an indicator. Last year the social media posts picked up after an August 7 announcement that the Hoyas were back on campus. Hopefully we'll see more information flowing soon.
We should see a roster before long. A couple weeks ago, I was pleasantly surprised by some additions to the coaching staff. There may be a couple pleasant surprises coming on the roster. I think Coach Rens has been hard at work. It's almost time to get to work on the court.

Best of all ,these seniors have a chance to finish their careers on a positive note, helping create a new era for the Hoyas in the Big East.

And... we have a roster. A big roster -- 18 strong. And, they've published a write-up of new players. Here are the additions: No. 2 - Jessica Cusi (Fr) (5'3") (DS) (Pacifica, CA) No. 7 - Hannah Hamling (Fr) (6'1") (MB/RS) (Warwick, NY) No. 8 - Lara Adekunle (Fr) (6'1") (MB) (Naperville, IL) No. 9 - Iva Vujosevic (Jr) (5'11") (OH) (Bar, Motenegro) No. 12 - Elissa Barbosa (Fr) (5'10") (OH) (San Antonio, TX) No. 15 - Brooke Detwiler (Jr.) (5'6") (S) (Tucson, AZ) No. 20 - Brennan Wilhite (R-Fr) (6'3") (MB) (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) The freshman have been discussed in previous posts. Regarding the others: - Vujosevic was a great hitter for Coach Rens at UMES last year, and was named All-Region Honorable Mention. She led the team in kills (411) and hit at a .261 clip. Those are nice numbers. She also added 300 digs.
- Wilhite is quite an impressive addition. She's transferring from USC, where she red shirted as a freshman last year. She was the No. 75 recruit in the class of 2017 (compare this to Speech - who was No. 65 in 2015). This is a big time recruit for Coach Rens. Let's hope she has a career that also compares with Speech's.
- Detwiler is listed as OH on the roster, but the write-up indicates she's a setter...which makes sense given the make up of this roster (and her height). I believe she worked with the team as a setter during the Spring season.
This could be a good year for the Hoyas. They've added quality transfers at areas of need that will likely provide immediate impact, as well as depth. They've also added several freshman who will provide depth and compete for playing time. They will be able to have competitive work at practice with quality players on both sides of the net. There will be a lot of talent on the court. It would be fantastic to see Coach Rens and his staff turn things around and to see the Hoyas have an exciting season and be competitive in the Big East. Go Hoyas.

You hit the highlights but I would expect a couple of freshmen to do more than provide depth given their bios. Barbosa on AVCA all america watch list, Hamling with USA High Performance recognition/training and Cusi playing in the open division in JOs. No guarantees but that is legit background.
Took a while but happy to see all the pieces coming together for this year. Full staff and roster. Given some of the transfers I am wondering if GU coughed up additional scholarship resources for the team? these type of transfers would not have been possible in prior years

If it sounded that way, it wasn't intended. I absolutely think they will compete for playing time, as I said, and I will not be surprised at all to see important contributions from the freshmen. There is a lot of talent on the roster and I hope that leads to productive competition within the team that will make everyone better.

The Big East also published its pre-season rankings. 2018 Preseason Coaches’ Poll 1. Marquette (6) 78 pts. 2. Creighton (4) 76 3. Butler 60 4. Villanova 57 5. Seton Hall 52 T6. St. John’s 33 T6. Xavier 33 8. Georgetown 24 9. Providence 23 10. DePaul 14 I agree that Marquette and Creighton are the clear favorites. Given all the additions to the roster and coaching staff, I'd be surprised if Georgetown finishes as low as 8th. It would be great to see Georgetown in the hunt for the top 4 and a bid to the Big East tournament.
