Ryan Mutombo will make a name for himself. The son of the great Dikembe Mutombo, the junior center has made great strides since this time last year. The older Mutombo was in attendance on Saturday and absolutely loved a few of the plays the younger big man made. While he is not a light of foot prospect, he is a quality 15-foot and in weapon that can shoot, pass and rebound. A mid-level recruit just a year ago, his father’s alma mater, Georgetown, just offered, joining Georgia Tech as the two power programs to have done so thus far. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/holiday-hoopsgiving-top-takeaways

I had a front row seat for the second half of game. Here are my observations. - Has skills. Low post moves. Pretty decent jumper. I would guess Dikembe gets him a ton of coaching and training on the side. - Athletic. In good shape. Team he played spx is full court press all game. He was tired but hung in well. - Not a banger. Can be pushed around. Needs to improve on rebounding. - Seems like a good kid.

Love how he tagged Georgetown in his tweet. Agreed, he’s a legacy and a must get. As long as his pops pushes him to the school, I have no problem with Ryan choosing to go elsewhere. It’s his life and choice. But to have a former Hoya actually push his kid away from the program, unforgivable.

My guess is that the competition he is playing against in high school is not very high level, although it sounded like he played at a decent level in AAU this past summer. Ryan seems to be improving every year and projects as a D1 recruit. If he continues to improve and develop physically then I hope he becomes a Hoya if that is what he feels is best for him and his future.

I believe in arranged marriages for my sons and arranged recruitments of all Mutombos to Georgetown!

basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/mcdonald-s-nuggets-new-rule-proposal-ryan-mutombo-illini-moreFast forward to Tuesday night, when I watched him against St. Pius X, one of the better programs in Atlanta the past few years. To say his offense has continued to progress would be an understatement. He scored 43 points and added roughly a dozen rebounds and a few blocks in a double overtime win. He was dominant. I’m not trying to be a prisoner of the moment, but it’s been awhile since I’ve left watching a big man in a high school game more impressed than I was on Tuesday.Look for Mutombo’s stock to rise in a big way, as he’s not just a great prospect but a great student as well.

Glad to hear RM is progressing and looking like a legit prospect. But I can't help look at the 1st photo on that page (Kofi Cockburn) and then the picture of Ryan... Jeebus - Cockburn would make origami out of him.

To be fair, almost everyone is "built more slightly" than Cockburn. He is a very big and strong young man.

2. Which unranked player has made the biggest impression during the high school season? McDonald: This is really easy for me. Ryan Mutombo, son of Dikembe Mutombo, is my answer. As I mentioned in my column yesterday, it was as impressive of a performance as I’ve seen out of a post player in a while on Tuesday night. He scored 43 points against a good team that was keyed on trying to shut him down. His improvement in the past six months has been pretty incredible. He can score around the rim and in the mid-range. He has great hands, rebounds well, and protects the rim. And just as important as those traits, he’s physically and mentally tough. He’s added offers from Georgetown and Georgia Tech, but several others have been calling like Florida State, North Carolina, Rutgers and Virginia. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/rivals-roundtable-surprise-teams-emerging-stars-unsigned-seniors

I really think a near-term commitment from this kid could help Coach Ewing from a recruiting and PR standpoint. Would be ideal to be able to show recruits that an NBA player/alum has enough confidence in what Coach Ewing is doing to send his high level son to the program.

Do you have a sense if we are the clear leader here? I've read Dikembe's comments and obviously he'd love it, but any sense on Ryan's sentiments? It would be the coolest to have Dikembe's kid, especially seemingly being a high-level talent.

Not a great track record for ranked sons, Ewing, Jr. to Indiana and Jackson to Michigan State. Williams and Mourning ended up here. Also, Broadnax to FGCU.

Georgetown: “I’ve known Uncle Pat [Ewing] my whole life, so that’s just like family to me. It’s obviously a blessing to be recruited by them. It’s such a storied program in college basketball. I’m looking forward to getting there for a visit this spring.”
“I’m looking more for the right fit for me. I know Georgetown is great and it’d be great to go to my dad’s alma mater, but I have to make sure I make the right choice for me if I’m trying to get to the next level beyond college. I’m just making sure I keep all my options open.”
On the role his father will play in his recruitment: “During this process, my dad is really just there to support me no matter decision I make. He’s just there to support me and cheer me on. It’s always going to be love, even if I decide to go to like Syracuse. Mostly the questions I’ve asked him so far are about how to take care of my body at the next level and what to expect with the physicality. My dad was a four-year player at Georgetown, so he obviously has a lot of experience in balancing school and basketball playing on one of the best teams in the country.”
The Class of 2021 center says he plans on taking his time with the process and won’t be deciding until late in his senior year. Given his father’s ties to Georgetown and Patrick Ewing, the Hoyas have a pretty obvious in here. With his travel coach’s ties to Georgia Tech and his proximity to its campus, expect the Yellow Jackets to stay in the mix here as well.
Mutombo did admit North Carolina was his dream school. If the Tar Heels take their interest and turn it into an offer, that could get hot quick. There is also the academic component here. He’s a really good student, so schools with strong academic reputations will have a shot here as well.
