Landing a top recruiting class for 2021 is more important to the program than wins and losses in the upcoming season. If the staff falls flat on this class it will lead to a new coaching staff. 21 is that important. 2021 class is very important, but not more important than a competitive season. Go 15-15 again and it doesn't matter if Mutombo and Collins or whoever are in the boat, that is a sinking boat. Need 18+ wins, top 6 in the Big East finish; I know that is a lot to ask with six freshman, but it has to happen. Not really. We could have another pretty bad season next season and still be fine if the right pieces are coming in the 2021 class. If we have a bad season AND no one special is coming then yes we should start to sweat.

If we have a bad season AND no one special is coming then yes we should start to sweat. It's not so much that we need to avoid having a bad season this year - most everyone expects that. We just need this FR class (2020) to not be a dud. If we go 6-14, and... Sibley ends the year starting & averages 12-15, Beard scores 10ppg, and Clark or somebody else looks good in regular minutes -- that's about as much as you can ask. Hopefully at that point - with an improving Wahab - you've got a legit core to build around. If Collins, Mutombo, and another solid piece show up in '21, you're already at a stage where you're going to be back to compete for a tourney spot in '22 and hopefully more in '22-'23. I'm not giving up on this season by any means, but there's a distinct possibility we don't get as much as we'd like from the upperclassmen who are going to lead this team (Pickett, Blair, J Harris, Bile). And that won't bother me nearly as much as our FR class not showing up. I'm not talking about a nightmare, USF, 1-19 type year here. That probably runs everybody off and costs Pat his job. But if we had another record like this past season and our young guys looked OK, that's something to build on.

I love Patrick and have since we arrived together On the Hilltop in 1981. That said, we have not played winning basketball; recruiting has been hit or miss at best; his celebrity is not drawing top big men; and attrition is at best disturbing. If he cannot land Dikembe’s son exactly what is the rationale for his continuing as HC? Recruiting is a hit or miss for every program in the country. It's the nature of recruiting. It's also magnified by ridiculous rankings/stars system that the general college basketball media & fan base use to evaluate recruits. Villanova who I consider the standard bearer of a GREAT program has had hit & misses on recruiting. Do you think Nova Nation thought their worst two recruits by "rankings/star" wise from their 2017 & 2018 classes would be their best two players by far last season? Or do you think they were misled by these know nothing, never played the game at a high level recruiting analyst to believe the multiple top 50/100 "ranked" prospects, 5 & 4 Star guys like Jermaine Samuels, Dhamir Cosby Roundtree, Cole Swider, Brandon Slater, & Jahvon Quinerly would be powering their top 10 program. All those guys I listed are role players at their best & Quinerly a "5-Star Top 25" burger boy had to transfer because he got beat out for the PG job by a kid that wasn't ranked by most of these services when he graduated high school in 2017. Recruiting is hit or miss for everyone. UNC had two "5-Star Top 25" Burger boys & five overall top 70 prospects and had a worst season then a Georgetown team that struggled the last half of the season to have and play five healthy bodies. Recruiting for every coach in the country is a guessing game at the end of the day. Coaches look great when they guess right and not so much when they don't. Coach Ewing for the most part has been right on the players he's recruited abilities to play at a high level. If you want to say he missed on their personalities, that's fine but that's a way harder think to guage (mostly over the phone) then the players skill set and abilities to compete.

In terms of Ryan Mutumbo, he can take all the time he needs to make his decision, just as long as it leads to him being in a Georgetown Jersey November of 2021.

If we have crappy season it won't look good for us if he drags out his decision date.

If you want to say he missed on their personalities, that's fine but that's a way harder think to guage (mostly over the phone) then the players skill set and abilities to compete. I also think there may have been a lesson learned with the way that Freshman class was always talked up as "the future of the program" and the attention they seemed to take away from hard-working upperclassmen. I'm not saying they did not deserve attention, but sometimes it seemed (at least from the outside) like the attention was a bit too focused on them and not on the overall team. It could have set the wrong tone for a team dynamic, and inflated the heads of the young Freshmen. For me at least, that is why I was so glad that Jagan got the recognition and accolades he deserved his Senior year. I seriously worried last year that he was going to accelerate his education and graduate early, and complete his final year of eligibility as a grad transfer elsewhere. I am glad my fear was unfounded!

Aside from Quinerly, the important point is they're still there, getting better while the starters continue to set a high standard. Jermaine Samuels started all 30 games last year -- a solid piece of Villanova's lineup. Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree continues to struggle through the leg injury from 2019. Swider and Slater haven't done much but when they get the call in a big game as a senior, chances are they'll be ready. That's the formula for years at Syracuse where a Kris Joseph or an Etan Thomas wasn't very good early but got better and put themselves in position to lead when the time was right. There are no guarantees for the top 100 but it your're trying to make the argument that a group of underrated, high effort kids are the way to go to get back to the NCAA's, I'm not on board. College sports are full of players that were overlooked--Rob Sgarlata's got a whole roster of them down the hill, and they're still not getting close to the Top 25. College basketball, however, has a high correlation on skill sets that are in built in high school that can lead a team to sustained success. With few exceptions, the men that led Georgetown to sustained success were similarly recognized in high schools as nationally prominent talent, not unranked or what are generously called "two-star" talents by the contemporary recruiting services. Eight different recruits from eight states, none locally, give recruits and their coaches the unfortunate impression that it's scramble mode on the GU recruiting front. Verbal Commits is tracking four openings for Villanova in 2021 with eight open offers. Georgetown has four openings and 45 open offers. Where great teams reload and teams that have been knocked down a peg rebuild, Georgetown is refilling every year. And that has to improve. www.verbalcommits.com/schools/georgetown

It would be great if Ryan committed to the Hoyas early, because I think it would set a tone and send a message that might help attract some other high end recruits. At the same time I don't blame the young man for waiting and being patient with his choice. Players want to go to programs where they can have a reasonable expectation of winning and making the NCAA tournament. These young men have typically player for really strong high school programs and have had a lot of success on those teams and winning is important to them. Hopefully the Hoyas have a good year this upcoming season and Ryan can see the opportunity to win at Georgetown and commits. That doesn't mean they need to win the Big East or even qualify for the tournament this season, but I think they do need to show the progress that makes a player like Ryan confident he has a real chance to win when he arrives.

Man, that's an absurd argument -- comparing Nova's recruiting to ours... Nova and other schools with regular success have "misses" because they have exceedingly successful hits. There's only one ball out there. In 2016 when they won it all, their top 7 scorers were all Top 100 kids. 2017 - Top 4. 2018 - 6 of top 9. 2019 - 6 of 11 (coincidentally their worst yr of this bunch). 2020 - 7 of 9 Even their other guys are still 3 & low 4-star talents: Saddiq Bey, Collin Gillespie, Donte D. So their success isn't exactly a surprise either. The only guys who weren't highly ranked coming out of HS for them recently were transfers (Paschall, Cremo) who had already proven themselves at the college level. ON EDIT: Even Paschall was a 3/4-star (ranked as high as 112 on 24/7). Didn't realize that. Honestly - there's not a single "sleeper" in that whole bunch. If a few guys don't pan out for them, so what? They've got lots of proven talent to fall back on. We need talent like that. Ryan Mutombo is talent like that!!

It would be great if he chooses to commit early. At the end of the day it doesn't matter just as long as he's a Hoya in 2021-2022. I'm not sure how much his commitment would help other players make up their minds any faster. Multiple reasons why... 1. Global health pandemic makes me believe that prospects will slow down their decision making. Especially since they are trying to set up August, September, & October evaluation periods. I doubt they will occur but we will see. I know some have already come out and made decisions way early but I think they were going to make those decisions regardless. 2. Ryan Mutumbo's explosion in his game was mostly on the high school scene in Georgia. Without any AAU, players aren't seeing or hearing of him doing damage a national scale vs players from everywhere. While I don't think AAU necessarily dictates how really good you are, it gives you a national audience to showcase them and the hype that comes with it. 3. Fair or not, Mutumbo's commit could be perceived as just a legacy commit by other recruits who aren't aware or have seen his abilities first hand.

Ewing was listed at 240 lbs when he played at Georgetown. Ryan must be stronger than he looks at 235.
