In conference play, James is shooting 18.5% from inside the arc and 40% behind it. For comparison, Mac is shooting 50% from inside and 31% from outside.

Does he dribble too much? I think it’s less that he dribbles too much (though sometimes he does), and more that when he gets himself into positions where he can’t shake a defender he sometimes takes ill advised shots. Make no mistake, while he had some good moments distributing the ball, it was a bad game for him offensively. In conference play, he’s shooting 18.5% from two. It’s over a long enough period where it’s not just a slump. He simply can’t finish. I’m not saying he can’t fix it or work around it, but he can’t seem to handle the bigger size he’s seen in the Big East.

If you've noticed almost all of James' outside (jump) shots the last 5-6 games at least have been short/off the front of the rim, whereas his f/ts are money...I think he's just got tired legs...hopefully, just taking some breaks/getting some rest between games will rejuvenate him/get his leg lift back because he can be a pretty good outside shooter...

If Mosely, Pickett, Govan or Trey Mourning did that they would get absolutely crucified and they have been for much less. His ball distribution and dribbling is great but until he's able to finish consistently at this level it's going to be hard to close out alot of these close games. I do wonder if the MacClung-Mosley lineup is better (improved defense) for this year, MacClung shifting to primary ball handler and point guard then the MacClung-Akinjo lineup since Akinjo's finishing numbers set a low bar for Mosley's offense. I'm sure there are numbers out there that could track that. *Also MacClung-Akinko are both so ball dominate that people like Malinowski get less touches. When we beat Butler, MacClung was out and Akinjo was able to feed Malinowski and Malinowski had alot more touches.

IMHO James ought to sit down with 50 hours video of Jalen Brunson. Brunson used his strength, like DSR, and his handle to work in amongst the trees. Jump stops, ball fakes, head fakes and always be ready to kick it out...

At the end of the day the kid hasn’t even played 30 games of college bball yet. He’ll figure it out.

I thought that Akinjo had arrived as a dominant pg after that game. If I recall he absolutely killed it that last 10 minutes of the game. Dribble penetration, pull up jumpers, feeding open man. What happened? Level of BE competition?

I have the impression that often he drives straight into several defenders - most direct route to the hoop, and gets clobbered ... vs Mac's drives often seem like they are too far away, when he suddenly curves and gets the ball up to the glass

Starks was pretty useless as a freshman, and pretty mediocre as a sophomore. Akinjo is winning games as a barely 18 year old freshman. I have a hard time getting too worked up about his struggles to finish against big east-level size. He is still winning games for us even while shooting 18% on two point FGs. imagine how good he'll be when he figures out how to score in the paint.

I didn’t think I needed to specify that.

A lot of his struggles have to do with lack of explosion & strength, getting older won't cure these deficiencies. Is the Gtown S&C program up to the task of developing it's very promising frosh class?

Is this the same kid that put up 19 against Nova and 23 in a half vs Xavier, or nah?
There’s 9 other coaches in the BE that would love to have this kid. What some see as deficiencies others see as areas for growth. 🤷🏾♂️

Akinjo has been great all season and very well may end up being Big East Freshman of Year. He is the answer to the PG question the program has had for a few years and gives the program some real hope moving forward. Is he perfect every game? No, but either is any other freshman in the country. Developing consistency is the hardest thing for these young men as they move from high school to major D1 basketball. He has had a handful of struggles this year but he seems to rebound well and continues to show improvement. I have no doubt he will come out and play well in the next game.

Listening to an old radio interview with Frank Robinson recently.....I was priveledged to watch Frank a lot up at Memorial stadium during my HOYA day’s. He played the game beautifully and HARD. In that interview, he mentioned his upbringing in Oakland ......they sure make them tough out there.

I get the “glass is half full” approach in your post, and I fully acknowledge that I’m a “glass is half empty” type fan the majority of the time... in my defense being a Cowboys & Mets fan has beaten me down over the decades...

James is shooting 27.8% in league play. Teams in this league have bigger guards and he is getting blocked on drives to the basket at least a couple times a game. As long as the assist numbers are ok, it's something we're going to have to live with this season. More alarming to me is that govan is only shooting 44.5% in league play. Too many jumpers.

He will learn to not take that extra dribble In lane trying to make a tough layup and stop and shoot the pullup jumper instead

Akinjo has been great all season and very well may end up being Big East Freshman of Year. Given that both McClung and LeBlanc have been better than Akinjo overall, I think that's unlikely, though he could be on the all Big East rookie team.
