I don't know the answer, but this seems like a real stretch to me...But stranger things have happened in NCAA-land. It’s a better readon than Josh Smith had. Cultural hostility versus fat shaming ? I think I actively blocked out portions of Joshua's whole situation. What was the reasoning (if any) for his waiver anyway? Wasn't it a family thing?

I don't know the answer, but this seems like a real stretch to me...But stranger things have happened in NCAA-land. It’s a better readon than Josh Smith had. Cultural hostility versus fat shaming ? A few things. First, Josh Smith's situation was different because he only played in a handful of games the previous season and he transferred mid-season. Because of that, without the waiver, he would have essentially missed 3 semesters of basketball AND lost a year of eligibility for playing in a handful of games. That's not the case with Yurtseven who played an entire season, and did not transfer mid-year. Further, I don't think Josh's issue was "fat shaming." There is no concrete explanation of why Smith got the waiver, though one journalist likened it to a medical redshirt and noted he struggled with off-the-court issues. Don't forget Howland's UCLA program in that era was a total mess. Clearly, Josh Smith had some motivational problems, etc., and I think that likely has more to do with the waiver than anything relating to his weight. This doesn't change the fact that the NCAA situation is extremely arbitrary. But, it's hard to compare a guy who played a handful of games and had already missed essentially an entire season of play, to a guy who was a prominent and regular player at North Carolina State.

Maybe Yurt gets one, maybe not.
That said, the Josh Smith situation is proof positive that the NCAA does whatever it wants without rhyme or reason.

Lifetime Hoya fan, first post, so I apologize in advance. I must State first...my son was looking at playing college football, and for whatever reason, I took him to Clemson at Syracuse ( not a whole lot of high level college football options living in the Northeast). Anyways, I went decked out head to toe in Hoyas gear. People thought I was insane but you gotta represent! The looks on the SUcks people was worth it!
Anyways, this may have absolutely nothing to do with Omer’s situation, but I coach HS hoops and we deal with transfers all the time. Any time the “bullying” card is played, waivers are all but guaranteed. Can you imagine being the school, and the lawsuit that would happen, by denying a waiver due to bullying, and then something happens? If Omer was indeed uncomfortable with what was happening in the area around NC State, I could easily see the waiver being granted...
To all posters...keep up the good work. Being a part of Hoya nation is truly something I’m proud of and I look forward to watching Coach Ewing build the program back to where it should be!

Very solid points on the bullying point if it's the situation that Omer was dealing with at NC St. In this political climate, it's very possible. The fact that Omer is from another country (Turkey), he may not have known that certain areas of the country might not be as welcoming and supportive to him and his faith. As a former long time Coach myself, I look forward to reading more of your insight...

I’m ashamed to say this, but I’ve never been to Georgetown University. I caught my first Hoya game in Providence last year. I’ll be in DC from Nov 7-11, so I’m going to catch the Central Connecticut game. Any thoughts on what I need to see on the Georgetown campus would be greatly appreciated!

Everyone will have advice of their own to offer. Check out the Tombs on 36th Street. I like the Quad, the courtyard framed by Healy Hall, Dahlgren Chapel, and Old North. If you need a hotel reservation, check out the hotel on the Levey Center. The rates are surprisingly reasonable, at least relative to the rest of the area. Also welcome!

Can I ask - what made you a lifetime Hoyas fan? If you didn't go to Georgetown, and you're not from around the area, what attracted you to them? Totally not trying to gatekeep here - I'm curious!

Tombs on 36th, but just up from it on 36th is Wisemillers (aka Wisey's, Why-pay-less, etc.) is worth sticking your head in and getting a chicken madness sandwich so you can understand the references which show up on the board, hit the main campus through the main gate and notice the stone wall and think "Hoya Saxa" (what rocks) and you will become one of the enlightened, Gaston Hall, Riggs Library, and then head to the student center and hit the bookstore (hopefully there will be a sale to stock up on Georgetown goods), and also worth heading out back past the football field to make a trip to McDonough Gym (yes the McDonough Gym where Kenner League takes place (if you listen carefully you may hear a faint echo of "shoots... two" still bouncing around from Kenner). This should help give memories that will help see the places mentioned on the board and a taste of the campus and Georgetown experience. Oh, the Exorcist steps are not far from the Tombs.

I was born in ‘77, always big for my age. I was a big man growing up, so why not Big Man U. Grew up hoping to be the next Ewing, then Mourning, Mutombo, Harrington, Sweetney, etc. My first heartbreak was losing to Xavier in the 1990 tourney. Was in high school when AI came to town and I’ve never lost the love. Outside of the New England Patriots I might not love anything more than the Hoyas. My son has no idea and thinks DSR is the greatest Hoya ever. So...for good and bad, the Hoyas are it for me...

Riggs Library requires access for entry, no? Skip right past Lauinger. In my day (1999-2003), you could only go up to the door of Riggs Library and look in. I did go to a special event there once, it's really a cool place. My impression is that the ability to access Riggs has gotten easier since my time on campus (when it was extremely rare to be able to go inside).
