If he does leave for whatever reason, that's a wrap on next season. Going to get real bad real quick unless Mourning turns out to be an all big-east caliber player. Mourning can grad transfer. I'd expect Jesse back before I'd expect Trey back. Although with Doc gone Trey's minutes could increase.

Smart move Mr. Govan, test the waters and see what the results will return for you. I'm with you on this. Get evaluated and if decide to return I feel he will be even more motivated along with Coach E's tutoring Govan should be headed for a solid year. If the evaluations tell him he needs to be in the draft then it just means that Coach E knows how to develop these players. True it may leave us a little short on our lineup that is just the bad with the good. Coach E will get others to come and if he get them together at the right time I feel we will be on our way. Also to get the players we want and need those players got to feel and know that being here is a path to the NBA.

Whether true or not, I really really doubt Mourning goes anywhere.

Getting the additional input will help him next year. He has a lot of work to do before he is NBA ready.

IIRC, from what reports we had, he is a very bright guy that had a number of credits entering college. His folks must be really proud.

This doesn't bode well for improving on the worst schedule in D1

Duke’s Wendell Carter, a lock lottery pick is unsure of leaving, yet our two guys, neither of whom are on anyone’s draft boards, are leaving?! Following the similar case of Peak, this is not a good trend. Is playing at Georgetown such a bad thing that these guys can’t wait to leave? I understand Govan may not really leave, but still.
Forget Villanova retaining their guys, but how does Xavier keep Blueitt for 4 years? Seton Hall with Delgado, Rodriguez, Carrington? Providence with Cartwright? Butler with Martin? Something must be wrong with our culture if these teams can do it but we can’t. And until we fix it, we’ll remain at the bottom of the standings in my opinion.

Yes, something is wrong with our culture - we don't win, while in recent years Nova, Xavier, Seton Hall, Providence, and Butler all DO win. I don't think these differences are anything more complicated that this. As many on the board often say, winning solves a lot of problems. I don't think our issues are all that complex - we'll struggle in a lot of ways until we start winning.

You can't win if you can't keep the players though.

It would almost be foolish of him NOT to test the waters/find out where he stands...he's a rising senior and he needs objective feedback on his game, his weaknesses, etc. I would think Patrick would encourage this as a smart move...though it doesn't seem likely at this point, I'd love to see Marcus do the same...

It is almost like being a senior college isn’t any fun. Maybe times have changed.

I am not shocked at all about Jessie testing the waters with the NBA guys. The way the system is set up now any player having consistent success in a major conference probably should declare and let the NBA guys evaluate them and give them feedback. The key is not hiring an agent so you can get the benefits of being evaluated and still maintain your eligibility if it doesn't look like you will get drafted. Delgado from Seton Hall did the same thing last year and after getting feedback he decided to return for his senior year.
I was not shocked about Marcus declaring for the draft earlier, but I was surprised he said he was hiring an agent because that does eliminate some of this options.
My guess is that neither of them get feedback that they will be drafted this season and expect Jessie back next year. Unless Marcus changes his mind about an agent he will be gone.

This is why I am confident that Govan will return. There is no way he will receive feedback saying he's NBA ready - and I am not saying that as a bad thing. I think he's a very good college player who has the potential to be excellent. He's just not there yet.

This isn't news. Every junior with NBA potential will declare so they can go to the combine and get feedback. Everyone does this since they changed it where you can go to the combine twice.
Govan isn't draftable right now. Not worried.

Sounds like Govan's dream is play in the NBA. If that is the case, this is exactly why this rule exists. He can get the feedback needed to improve his stock and raise his profile for next season. Ewing is a very good resource for him to work with on his weaknesses and hopefully next season he can be in better position with the NBA. With MD declaring and leaving, Govan is in position to put up some great numbers next season.

You can't win if you can't keep the players though. That's a core part of the challenge. When you get the place that we have as a program, you end up in this "chicken and egg" situation. You can't win without the players. But you can't get/keep the players unless you win. I don't think fans, despite a healthy dose of pessimism, fully realized the challenge Ewing is facing. Ewing, however, seemed to know what he was getting himself into with his early talk of this being a long term rebuild that will require fan patience. We were optimistic after a pretty good first season from Ewing, all things considered. But the next year or two are when our patience gets tested, because we are all expecting steady progress - when the reality is that stuff like Derrickson (and maybe Govan) leaving early is likely to keep us in a "one step up, two steps back" situation for awhile. Hopefully the foundation of our program and Ewing's ability to lead the program will keep us moving forward. But there is no guarantee of this, and I think Ewing is going to start facing some serious fan/media criticism over the next couple of years if we hang around .500, finish in the bottom third of the conference, and continue to fail to reach the NCAA tournament. Which is probably a lot more likely than most of us would like to think.

Govan isn't draftable right now. Not worried. Govan has close to zero chance of getting invited to the combine. i think they only invite about 60 players. there are probably going to be a lot more than 60 players ahead of Govan on the invite list, since he is not projected as a first or second round draft pick by just about any draft web site/writer. But he can still work out for teams and get feedback, so it still makes sense for him to declare without an agent and do these workouts.
