There is something going on at St John's that makes these kids want to leave. He seemed to get quite a bit of playing time so I don't think he is leaving because of that.

Kids leaving is not a good look for the coach and is a precursor to his eventual departure. Nothing exciting about Jamaica, Queens either.

Wow. Losing this big along with Owens and probably Ponds. St. John’s is going to fight DePaul for the cellar.

That's a completely false narrative. He barely played at all this season especially in conference even when the Frontcourt players wer in foul trouble. He never developed any offensive game. The only real surprise here is why he waited so long to announce his transfer...

They have BIG Sedee Keita eligible next season after his transfer from South Carolina who might be better offensively than both Owens and Yakwe and redshirt freshman Boubacar Diakite coming back off an injury. Plus they are going after All American Burger Boy 6'10" Jordan Brown out of California very hard. Both Owens and Ponds might return to St. John's. Owens stated he's keeping the door open and Ponds has stated unless he's guaranteed a 1st round pick he is coming back because the 19 draft class is considered to be pretty weak.

Keita averaged all of 1 point and 2 rebounds in his year at South Carolina. What makes you think he's an upgrade? Can't see Owens coming back or being welcome back after going to the press with his transfer before informing Mullin and the coaching staff.

Lovette getting injured & then quitting on the team derailed this year..

Tariq Owens averaged 1.2 points & 1,2 rebounds in his year at Tennessee but upped it to 5.5 & 5.2 after his RS year for St. John's.. It'll be hard for Keita to be worse than Yakwe was this season imo..

Lovette getting injured & then quitting on the team derailed this year.. Expectations were highest this season, true. But last year was supposed to be better than year one, and really was not. I want to see St. John's come back for the strength of the conference, but so far have seen zero reason to believe it will happen.

How much could folks have expected from a team that lost 21 of it's last 22 games in Mullins first season? Even still they went from 1-17 in year one to 7-11 in year 2, that's not a nice jump in your view? This season was absolutely a disappointing one for St. John's but the 1st 2 year are about what was expected imo..

Justin Young @justindyoung
Sources confirm what has been reported by a number of people that Jonas Hayes has accepted a position at Xavier. He was on staff with Mark Fox at UGA. Hayes is one of the best coaches - developers and recruiters - in the South.
